JonX- Shrimp Tank

JonX

Recommended Posts

Update, found 2 dry shrimp, it was my CBS sss juvie and male blue rilli. Also a crown head male SS died, I did a water change he must not have liked it, but it was needed as I am away for work for 3 weeks.

It happens

This guy is still going strong. Stud male to a couple of my CBS females

On a brighter note my girls are still heavily berried 6 of them, and a SSS has become a definate female. My girlfriend is feeding the tank so I should come back to a tank full of tiny shrimplets after 3 weeks! =)

I bought those charcoal shrimp caves- very cheap, there is charcoal dust and it smudges charcoal when you handle them. They also need time sinking. I've berried some in the substrate. My shrimp hide under the goldvine, I've placed these shelters near the front of the tank to encourage them to move up so I can appreciate them.

I got myself one of these Bucephalandra cuttings and its kept in the nano cube with co2 and upaqua z series light.

I am thinking about changing the mesh to smaller size mesh because shrimplets are passing through. Its a pain to make theae screens because i dont have access to the tools anymore. I am thinking about getting sheets of sponge for the divisomsns. Butt ugly but good extra filteration and biofilm.

Divided shrimp tank 2nd and 3rd divisions.

They were dead dry on the floor 2 weeks ago. Just haven't updated.

I've since replaced them and my bank account bleeds. =)

  • 2 weeks later...

It's been 13 days now that I haven't seen my shrimp. My girlfriend has sent me some photos of them. I've noticed some of the plants have grown more in her pictures.

She tells me she says little red and white shrimp some of them with red only on their heads. The shrimplets are in all the divisions squeezing through the stainless steel mesh. I've ordered some finer mesh and will be putting the original glass dividers that I got from the tank builder in temporarily while I strip the perspex dividers from the silicon and resilicon them on. Then every body will be in their rightful division.

I've got blue rillis heavily saddled, high grade CBS and CRS new additions that I have not yet seen as they were purchaced while I have been working away. I can't wait to get home in another 10 days!

Here are the photos my girlfriend sent me.

First division- I've noticed the HM has grown about 5cm.

GF looks like she's doing a great job ! As soon as you're back home, and after checking out the tanks, shrimps and WC etc.... You should just propose, as she's obviously a "wife" material ! LOL

Thanks for the positive comment Foxpuppet.

While talking to my girlfriend on the phone she's looking at the tank and says: 'What is that? Looks like an insect, wow, looked like it stuck its tongue out to eat a shrimplet.'

Immediately I have alarm bells going off- she caught it out took a photo of it and sure enough it looks like a dragon fly nymph. She threw it off the balcony as per my instructions. I'm greatful my girlfriend saw it! I wonder how much damage it has done!

I was contemplating this the other day. In the aid of getting through boring classes, I thought it would be cool to have some video cameras, set up on your tank, streaming to the internet/phone wherever...

Sure enough with a <$300 home security system you can have 5 cameras all streaming live..... The possibilities...

I couldn't imagine being away from my shrimp for as long as you are... It's a struggle to leave them for a weekend.

I tried that, and bought a wireless camera, but was then told I had to apply for a static IP address for it, which cost like $20 a month ! Not sure whether there's a better alternative ?

Blue Bolts' date=' when I breed enough shrimp one day I can sell them off and buy a 1.5carrot ring for her! =)

When I first got my shrimp tank I used to look at it for hours. We've had the 'you need to balance your shrimp time and me' talk.

Now, I'll wait for her to go to work and spend all day doing shrimpy stuff. She also said you are going to have fun trimming that tank.

Here's some shots of the nano cube my girlfriend just sent me running c02 now.

Oh that's a bit scary, really need to quarantine plants then. I got 3 different types of snails and thought I had checked them well! You are very lucky your GF saw that amongst all your plants.

Cheers

One interesting thing he mentioned was "Bacteria pressure", which I guess just means number of bacteria around.  Yet I see all these other videos from shrimpkeepers bragging about how much bacteria their filtering system holds. Also interesting is no mention of using anti-biotics to treat bacterial infection.  I think that has fallen out of favor recently.

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.
