  1. Ive done alot of research but let me explain my set up for you. I have a 6 gal tank that is approx 12 inch tall. It is a fertilized and currently has a DIY co2 on it, i did this by taking a 2 liter bottle and adding sugar and yeast, it is connected to a special co2 bubble (whatever they are called). The tank also has high lighting and is completely planted carpeted and bigger plants. Im about to be adding in my cherry shrimp and know that gassing them with co2 is possible at night. And im wanting to avoid this of course. Yet i dont want to spend alot of money upgrading my co2 system. The co2 bubblier is only 8-9 inchs from the water line. The majority of the bubbles reach the surface meaning not all the co2 is dissolving or there are other gasses present. Im wondering if I can get away with this co2 delivery system. Or what simple upgrades could be made so that it doesn't run at night? from what i understand it would be at night i would gas the shrimp? Also I do a 50% water change 1 if not 2 times a week. Options ive thought of- 1. Instead of a 2 liter bottle maybe like a 12 oz bottle, scale back the yeast and sugar so there is less co2 being produced 2. Releasing the pressure in the DIY bubblier before bed. so it would take maybe 4-6 hour for the pressure to build up again and start bubbling 3. Upgrading system (Dont want to do this really, but i though of it)
  2. Hello. I have a rather new aquarium set up. Its 20 litres (5-6 gallons). I cycled it for a couple of weeks, and tested the nitrates (0.05). I then did a 50% water change and bought 10 rcs, and 6 neon tetras. It all went fine, i may have overfed a bit in the beginning, but made sure to do a 20% water change every twice a week, to compliment that. 2 first weeks went fine, but then i noticed a dead shrimp. I pulled it out, did a water change, and didnt give it much thought. About 3-4 days later, and i just found a dead neon. I might suspect i have lost more shrimp, since i couldnt see them all today, but i dont know for sure. I was just wondering, is it normal to lose a couple of fish the first month of a new tank, or should i be worried? The water temperature is around 24C (75 Fahrenheit), and they dont give any signs of struggle. Thanks in advance
  3. I am setting up a new tank and currently have a 36" 12 gallon, a 30 gallon long, a 20 high, a 10 gallon and a 29 gallon. I am now setting up a 75 gallon. I am using a Submersible and a HOB and a UG with Power heads. My question revolves around running the Powerheads in reverse and feeding them with CO2 from a Citric/Baking soda set up. Will the CO2 hurt the plants being delivered to the roots first for maximum diffusion? I do use Seachem Excel in my tanks trying to give the plants the edge over the algae. I have also used the H2O2 and CO2 punch technique successfully but haven't chatted too much about ferts and CO2. Does anyone see any concerns with my plan?
  4. Im keen on trying tabs rather than the liquid forms of plant ferts and want to know if anyone has had success with a particular one/brand in shrimp specific tanks? From what i can gather the doses are about the same for example with flourish but i have no idea if its better or worse for the shrimp? And if i go the tabs or stick versions how much copper is too much? All fertilisers seem to have a very tiny amount like 0.001% but it would be less accurate in tab form due to the fixed size of the tab etc http://www.seachem.com/Products/product_pages/FlourishTabs.html Any info would be great
  5. This tank has much more of a focus on the planted side of things, but it contains some Chameleon a Shrimp and hopefully soon it will have a group of DAS and maybe Darwin Red Nose Shrimp, just waiting for the weather to be a bit warmer for them to be posted. Here's the latest full tank shot: and a photo of it on startup, the substrate has since been changed and the rock work altered some. The plant list is currently: Ammania Senegalensis (just been trimmed and not visible as it is in the back right corner) Anubias Nana 'petite' Hemianthus Callitrichoides 'Cuba' (HC) Hydrocotyle Tripartita 'Japan' Hygrophila 'Araguaia' Java Fern 'Windelov' Java Moss Ludwigia Inclinata 'Cuba' Ludwigia Repens x Arcuata 'narrow leaf' Ludwigia Repens 'Rubin' Alternanthera Reineckii Mini Mini Pellia Persicaria Sp 'Sao Paulo' Pogostemon Helferi Pogostemon Stellatus (new addition and hasn't grown into visibility, back left corner) Rotala Colorata (just been trimmed and only barely visible back/middle) US Fissiden so quite an extensive plant list for a small tank like this, but I love the overgrown jungle look and like the challenge of growing so many different plants that all have different needs, trimming requirements and growth rates. at the moment there is about 10 Chameleon Shrimp in there, although I've started spotting Shrimplets in amongst the moss so hopefully there is a few more now. as for fish, there is a school of 6 Rummynose Tetras with a rescued Cardinal that tags along, a Neon Blue German Ram, 2 Siamese Algae Eaters and a couple of Bristlenoses. some livestock shots:
  6. /i have a very large densely planted shrimp tank that needs a bit of thinning out. The plants are mostly swords with a few stem plants- I also have mosses and java ferns but they are on driftwood. The plants are in a thick layer of benibachi substrate and have a very large root system. My question is if I uproot some of these plants while my large CRS colony is in the tank is it likely to cause an ammonia spike? Is there anything I can do to stop the adverse effect? I have just had several drops of Shrimplets and I don't really want to catch them out as they are so little but I really would like to take a few plants out. I always worry if the substrate is disturbed so if it's too risky I will have to wait until the breeding season is over- I missed the boat this time they started breeding before I got a chance to do a big clean out.
  7. Well I decided to add some pieces of plant to a couple of Malaysian Driftwood pieces I had, so while I was pulling this and that out of the tank to sell off or use elsewhere I kept some small pieces of plant and added them to the Malaysian Driftwood. I'm happy with the end result, didn't want to go overboard on them so just small pieces here and there, these two pieces will be used in my next rescape, when ever that happens, but for now are sitting in a small tank with my Common Bristlenose. Plants added were Anubias nana, Needle Leaf Java Fern, Thor's Hammer Java Fern, Bolbitis Heudelotii, Crested Java Fern, was going to add some Christmas Moss but think it'll get out of control though eventually. So here it is, the end product, once again taken with an iPhone 5s and it's crap camera.
