With his fish he always blamed the seller for giving him sick fish. You might get away with it if your Ph doesn't rise?

Luck has nothing to do with it. There is nothing to it. Clearly your not going to put thousands of dollars worth of stock in before you put a few less of value shrimp in. As even with testing for ph and ammonia etc you can always a spontaneous spike.

My opinion is, and i push it upon noone else, is that if you dont test your water you wont try and adjust it. I think more people kill their shrimp from adding crap to their water to try and adjust it so that it is 'optimum' for their shrimp then wonder why they are all dying as opposed to just setting up a tank and adding shrimp. In my opinion any soil that leeches chemicals is fine if it is prepared properly. In regards to Tims tank, he has a huge water volume, enough to dilute the ammonia/nitrites that may leech from the soil. We also took the precaution of adding mature bacteria to seed the system. No better way to test the water then to have a feel for it first. You wouldnt go and jump in a pool without first dipping your feet in would you? you wouldnt run inside and grab a thermometer and test your pools temperature before jumping in? No thats ridiculous. Even with any new system whether youre using ADA, Benibachi, gravel or nothing, you always, without fail, throw in tester shrimp before flooding the tank with more expensive stuff.

As a noob to the forum I probably shouldn't stick my nose in. But if your planning to put exy shrimp in there not the cherry variety then you do in fact need to test. The low ph is imperative if u want them to breed :-) cherrys are much hardier and survive in much more varoed ph values and breed easily :-)

Nice setup there OP. as for not testing your water, well thats just silly.

This is what i tell everyone that ask me for advice about things.

"If you want advice on how to get rich ? you ask a millionaire not a homeless person living on the streets!

If you want advice on breeding shrimp? you ask the biggest seller of shrimp, not someone who has been breeding for years and has nothing to show"

Its important that all water parameters are tested and monitored and it is also important to have the best setup from the start so that you dont need to

continually try and adjust or change the parameters to get them where you want them. The parameters for almost every type of shrimp

can be achieved and set very easily buy just using the correct products from the start and there is a much less likely chance you will need to make further changes on a regular basis.

Tims feeling pretty discouraged to post anymore so heres something he sent me today.

This will be the F1 generation of mishlings. These shrimp were added to the tank a few days ago and theyre already at it. Mother is a SS CBS and the father (in the background) is a Pure Shadow panda.

@Timmeh do not feel discouraged mate! There will always be disagreements on these types of forums but do not let it get to you (ask Robert he is the master of disputes! as am I...LOL!) after all is said and done as long as you are happy with it and it works for you mate. In saying that, as members of SKF the more experienced will try to steer you in the right direction so you do not end up making the same mistakes they have in the past, it is up to you to take this information on board or learn for yourself, just like I did as a teenager not listening to parents wisdom landed me in a whole lot of S@#T!.

As said this is a caring community and their are no hard feelings at the end of the day all is forgotten, so relax and enjoy the forum as it was always meant to be.

i setup an ar850

let it cycle for 6 weeks

and then gave him 3 red cherrys 2pumpkins

i got him to keep them alive for 3 weeks give or take

then gave him some CBS

they are still alive rite now :)

will be adding some bbs and mishlings withing next month for him

I totally understand where everyone is coming from with all the negativity as I have done things differently to others but I have spoken to a few people on here and especially Rob about my whole setup. As rob posted I have a female berried and another wont be far from it. This will ultimately test my setup if it is matured enough.

I have about 30 shrimp all up in this setup now and not a single death thus far.

I do take everyone's opinion on board but some people are to worried about their setups not being right that they add to many things into the water. As robert has told me a number of times. The less your hards are in the tank the better, let them do there own thing and watch mother nature take over.

Thankyou everyone for your positive feedback and even the negitive in my opinion is positive as I take everything on board.

Everyone does things differently , I think I have done some things people would not agree with ( Didn't have a choice at the time , but has worked out ok ) keep us updated as you go , us newbies will learn things as you go both good and bad
