Divided 55G Neo/Tiger Tank

I am cycling a 55 gallon (208L) tank.  It is divided into 3 sections using Poret foam.  There is also a Poret foam corner filter acting as a pre-filter for the canister filter.  I haven't seen a tank setup like this so I thought I would share my experiences with all of you :o).

Here is the equipment I am using on the tank:

  • 3" thick 30PPI Poret Foam Dividers
  • 2" thick 45PPI Poret Foam Corner Filter
  • CaribSea Flora Max Panted Aquarium substrate (inert)
  • 48" Current Satellite+ Pro Light
  • Aqueon 250W Heater
  • Fluval 306 Canister Filter with Marine Pure media
  • Tunze Osmolator Top Off System
  • Pinpoint pH monitor

The tank has been cycling for about 2 and a half weeks.  I am using RO water with Shrimpy Daddy products and following the tank cycling procedure on his website.  The Ammonia and Nitrite levels were 0 by the end of the second week.  If everything continues to go well, I should be able to add shrimp in 2-3 weeks.

My current plan is to have a neocaridina and tiger colony in each section.

  • Snowballs with Super Tigers
  • Yellow Cherries with Red Tigers
  • PFRs with OEBTs

Here are a few pictures of the tank's progress.  This pictures shows the tank after I painted the back.

These pics show the equipment being added.  I used wire ties to hold the air lines in place.

Here is the tank after SD's products were added.

This one was taken right after the tank was filled.

The corner filter has more than enough room to hide the canister intake, the heater and the pH probe.

Added some teddy bear cholla wood.

Here it is after I added a few plants.

I will add a few more plants this week.  I will post a picture afterwards.

I would love to hear any comments or suggestions.  Thanks.

I really like how this set up looks.

I will use this foam in the future to do slip set up's. It looks really good and the amount of food the shrimp will be able to pick off it will be huge. Really looking forward to seeing the shrimp you get

Looks so neat and tidy. I really like those moss ball that look like they are floating. I think they will look really good once they grow out.

Do they come in different lengths? I think it would be nice to have them high in the tank.

Thanks Disciple.

The moss balls are just 1" square pieces of sponge that I tied moss to.  The sponge is sitting on top of a 6" glass stirring rod commonly used in chemistry labs.  I have a little control over the height by how far I push it into the substrate.  I have a couple of 12" rods that I may add to the tank the next time I have extra moss.  I like having moss in the tank but it can be a pain to trim when it is attached to large layout material.  These should be easy to remove from the tank when trimming time comes.

  • 2 weeks later...

I received 2 packages containing shrimp today :).  The first contained OEBT's.  The second contained PFR's, Snowballs, Yellow and Super Tigers.  Unfortunately, the bag containing the yellows broke in transit :(.  I should have replacements next week.

I put the Snowballs and Super Tigers in the left section.  The PFR's and the OEBT's went into the middle section.  The right section is for the yellows and Red Tigers (once I find some).

In a few days, after the shrimp become comfortable in their new home, I will take some pictures of them.  In the meantime, below are some new shots of the tank.  I added a little more moss to each section since the last pictures.

I took some pics of my new shrimp this evening.  I didn't want to stress the shrimp out since they have only been in the tank for 24 hours so I didn't use a flash.  The picture quality is therefore not the best.  I'll take more pics (with a flash) in a few days.

Thanks buddy.  I am really happy with the shrimp I have received.  I wish I could send you some of the PFR and super tigers.  You already have beautiful OEBTs ;).

I took some more pics that I would like to share.  I used a flash this time so there more detail in these.  Here are the OEBT's.

Hello folks,  The current problem I am having is that my Taiwan bee shrimp are molting before all their eggs have hatched.  Often the shrimp keep the eggs for 40+ days.  During that time, they lose about half or so, either due to dropping or duds or whatever.  Shortly before molting they look to have about a dozen left, and then they molt with about half a dozen eggs still on the shell.  Then the other shirmp will come and eat the shell.  These last few times, I have been getting around 0-3 surviving babies per batch.  I figure I can make the eggs hatch faster by raising the water temperature more (currently around 68F, which is already a few degrees higher than I used to keep it) or make the shrimp grow slower by feeding them less (protein).  Currently I feed Shrimp King complete every other day, and also a small dab of Shrimp Fit alternating days.  Maybe I can start alternating with more vegetable food like mulberry?  or just decrease the amount of food?

Yeah, cancer risk was a thing I'd seen mentioned a lot when looking into gentian violet briefly. I kinda just figured it might only be as bad as the cancer risk of malachite green as well, but maybe I should look into it more. I've been doing a pretty good job of not getting it on my skin and also avoiding dunking my unprotected hands into the tank water while treating my fish at least, though. Maybe I'll just not use it once I'm done this course of medication anyways, because I know a store I can sometimes get to that's pretty distant carries both malachite green and methylene blue, and in pretty large quantities.

Can't help you with Gentian Violet, sorry. It is banned in Australia violet for potential toxicity, and even possible cancer risks. I thought it was banned in Canada as well. At least, you now know why there isn't much info on gentian violet medication and it's use. But keep an eye on the snails after a week. If it affects the snails, it might not kill them immediately. So keep checking for up to a week. Much safer options out there. No point risking your own life over unsafe products.

Hello! I have a tank that currently does not contain shrimp, but does contain neon tetras which I am currently treating for Ich, as well as some bladder snails. Shrimp will be a later addition, likely cherry shrimp but I'm still doing research just to be sure. Initially I'd intended to buy some sort of Ich-fighting product that contains malachite green after doing a decent bit of research on it, most of which indicated that it should be shrimp-safe so I'd be good if I ever needed to use it again once shrimp were actually introduced (though I should note I'm aware shrimp can't get Ich, I'm more wondering in case the tetras could get Ich again, or something else that responds to similar medication). I ended up not being able to find any MG-containing products without either having to travel quite far or wait multiple days for delivery (which I was worried could lead the Ich to be fatal), and ended up picking up 'Top Fin Ick Remedy', a product that contains gentian violet which is a triarylmethane dye like malachite green. The bottle has two slightly differently worded warnings about its use with invertebrates ("not recommended for" and "not safe for" respectively), but when I'd been researching malachite green, I'd also heard of products that contain MG but not any other ingredients that would be harmful to inverts still being branded with warnings that they could be harmful, just as a "just-in-case" since the manufacturer didn't test it on any inverts, and I'm wondering if maybe it could be a similar situation here. I'm having a very very hard time finding information about gentian violet's use in fishkeeping at all though, it seems currently extremely uncommon. What I will say though is that I'm on day 2 of treating my tetras with it, and the bladder snails seem just fine -- in fact today I noticed what looked to be a bladder snail that appeared to be newly hatched (because of its size) that I hadn't seen before that was zipping around the tank without issue. But obviously, shrimp are not snails, and bladder snails are also notoriously hardy little guys, so what I'm seeing right now could easily be totally inapplicable to cherry shrimp. It might even be inapplicable to other species of snails, for all I know. Has anyone else here ever used anything that contains gentian violet in a tank that actually does contain shrimp? Were they okay, or should I make sure to not use it once shrimp are added?
