A UV Sterilizer cleans the water as it passes through it, it removes water born bacteria and algae. mostly i use it to stop the spread of bacteria between shrimp tanks.i use a UV on every tank or setup i run as insurance.

Hi Dean,Was just wondering, what does the UV do exactly?

me too! mine was $1200 in winter, $650 in spring! can't even imagine what's it gonna be with summer around the corner.. the power of solar energy? but wow. even with the reverse cycle on 24/7? amazing!

1 tank and mine is $800-$900 and that's with solar :cower:

Ok well seems I better explain a little further :)

The room is built from insulated refrigeration panels, the room is climate controlled, there is 1 low wat air pump running every tanks sponge filters, only 1 water pump for each side of the room and lights are only on at night in off peak hrs.

I work in the days so why have lights on when I'm not there?

Because the room is so well insulated, the climate control zircon is only on for maybe 1/2 hr - 1 hr a night.

if I turn the air on off it is 5-7 days before the temp changes by 2 degrees..

In short it is set up very efficiently power wise and lights are reverse cycle (night only) (off peak hrs)

Sounds like we need a forum for Green Initiatives in relation to shrimp keeping

That's a good idea Dean, reversing the lights cycle. And with fishroom with no Aircon like myself, having the lights on at night will save me on the heater use as well.

mate like i said to you a couple of months back on Facebook. Im impressed. no more than impressed im speechless.

Wow, need to invite you to my place to teach me how to get type of electrical usage.

In summer after the solar rebate is $900, then winter it went to $1800... >.<

But, I guess the 2kW heater in my GH killed it...

just a quick update.

i have been slowly testing and modifying the way i set up tanks to try and achieve the best setup for shrimps and ease of use for myself.

catching and watching shrimp and also monitoring numbers is always a challenge when trying to selective breed shrimp.

here are 3 tanks that i have set up that are doing very well and are now the model for all my tanks to be set up like.

Great setups Dean, can you enlighten us on the specifics of the tanks? Are all the sponges at the back in use?

  • Author

what would you like to know mate??

the sponges are all Cycled sponges that i add to all my tanks for surface area, as the baby shrimp love to live on them.

the second purpose is that when the sponge filters need cleaning i simply swap the dirty ones for the ones already in the tank.

once the dirty ones are washed and clean i then add them back to the bottom of the tank away from feeding area until im needing to clean

the sponge filters next time. this way they are always ready to go and the juvi have free feed in the meantime :)

the conduit at the back with the moss on them is to keep the substrate free from anything and clean.

the berried females go on there to give birth and the juvi live there for the first 2-4 days and then are happy to go down to the substrate where i can count them and monitor there growth rates, molting, survival rates etc.

Very very nice tank Dean. I spot a few rare plants on the driftwoods. Let me guess mini boltis and buca sp?

Also, I've seen a couple of tanks online where they don't put any soil at the front? Is there a reason why you do that?

Good idea on the sponge filter part too.

Great specs and ideas on the tanks!!!! Kirk I believe the from is bare for feeding to see the health of the shrimps as well as prevent food from going down into soil?

Good eye Kitz :) yes its mini bolbitis (spelling) and a Buc SP. the front of the tanks are sectioned off as they are the feeding area, and it keeps the soil clean. it also gives me a good close look at all the shrimp when they feeding..

Ive been doing exactly the same thing with sponges in my tank and the shrimplets love it. The sponges on my intake are clogging up a lot fast since ive added organic peat moss pots (from bunnings) to the tank as hide outs and they decay slowly but surely leaving small peat moss fibres floating all over my tank. Now ive got two sponges sitting on the substrate and rotate the pair making sure that there is not a single shrimplet in the used sponges i go to wash. Takes over 30 minutes just to make sure no lives are lost.

Truly a labour of love...Dean:sorrow:
