Thanks!! Means a lot to me!! I owe a lot a lot to everyone on skf, now hopefully it will self suffice and I don't have to keep buying to replace any deaths or else it's really shut down time :)

I find that although I'm not feeding often, the shrimp sometimes can't even finish a small piece (1/4) of commercial food... The plate makes it easier for me as I can take the unfinished food out the next day instead of letting it go soft or breaking apart which contaminates the water quality

thanks Honcho!! hopefully one day my tank will house awesome shrimps like your wine red too :)

its been a while but here are some updates' date=' nothing special besides adding some rose moss, mini fissidens, a peacock moss wall and a huge ass anubis.

[img']http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n91/licliczzz/AC201E9C-2F1E-4E62-A8BF-3CFDE3C0CC60-1275-0000016018F628D7.jpg

the rose moss are from a dear mate of mine where they werent working out for him, so i have them now trying to see how they do in my water parameters.

the moss wall isn't really covering the whole panel but hopefully it will provide some sort of safety house for the shrimplets to hide.

took out the shrimp caves as i added weeping moss to them with super glue, now in the community tank to ensure no poisonous stuff kills my high grades (coz low grades are ok xD) and will move them back once they are quarantined and color up again

problem with this setup is ive been waiting and waiting, they shrimps have been moulting and moulting, and nothing is getting berried which is a bit frustrating, even with mosura gravidas every 3 days isnt doing much. i am reluctant to use the breeding liquid although i still have a bottle left. i've even had my best SSS die due to old age because their freaking huge! maybe i dont have enough females? but im pretty sure i have a few in there :( any tips?

I love those shrimp shelters but they are ridiculously expensive for what they are. They look amazing and so does your setup.

Thanks rob! They are actually imitation I bought from china for a fraction of the price around $1.20' date=' the quality and color can't compare to the Japan originals. But they serve the same purpose and hopefully it'll look better once the moss settles in :)[img']http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n91/licliczzz/15DDC799-F606-4203-A6F8-7571CD772EEA-1751-000001F29253E585.jpg

  • 2 weeks later...

Came home today and found that there were numerous deaths in the 40cm cube including a few dark chocolates and my prized SS CBS :(

44B01C6B-6755-4F1F-817D-2284D9660629-6671-000008047A01CF54.jpgB5C53181-FA28-48AF-8F2B-CDC9BDFAAEF5-6671-00000804826ACC7D.jpg25FC3C92-1DDF-4FBD-824F-3D951AEC056F-6671-000008048AF5C613.jpg

I managed to save the eggs ASAP but there was already a snail feasting on the carcass (first pic), so hopefully i got in in time! As i don't have a tumbler, I put them in my net and just in front of the outflow pipe, not sure whether that's enough tho..

Had a look at the temp in the cube and it was 28c! So I decided to move all the shrimps over to the Cade. Not really my preference as I only had SSS in the tank, but rather let them mix with lower grades than to see them die

It also gives me an excuse to give my new toy a go :D The lazyman's wondertool, Ebitabreed water adjustment kit to help with acclimatizing the shrimp, it works like a normal airtube drip acclimatization but has a control valve instead of a knot. Tested it and let it drip for one hour.

Long story short, all the dark chocolates are now happy in the breeding box and low grades are in the tank enjoying a cool temp of 24c, hopefully they wont be affected by the sudden temp drop and water parameter shock

Deans cull on Dean's driftwood haha

F2FF0EEE-CBE8-45BD-A389-65F54D28AD4B-6671-0000080461278F4A.jpg

FTS with the eggs in the blue net in front of the outflow. I played with the scape again as I didn't like the huge anubis sitting there as it was creating a dead spot in one of the corners, so hopefully with this new layout there will be more smooth sailing. Gotta end this post with one sentence, CHILLER IS THE BEST THING YOU CAN GET FOR A SHRIMP TANK, LIFE SAVER! :)

@dean haha coz I'm so slack every time I proceed to checkout I will click cancel and spend the money on new fish or shrimp. Or something else comes out like family and friends visiting, Xmas, holidays, bills and tenants moving out :$ Then I thought wait a minute, if I move everything into the Cade till autumn won't that solve all my issues? Genius and as they say the rest is history loll

and yes! I'm gonna man up and say I love you dean :P thanks so much for everything hehe

@emmanual thanks for your offer :) I'm sure my babies (if any) would be best buds with yours! I do remember the coke method but I cleared everything from the tank so I only have plants in there growing at high temps! Still need to drop by and check out your awesome marine and shrimp tanks!

One of my dark chocolates are berried after being locked up in the love house, SO happy!

But...

She swam away the next day from the holes within the breeding box and I can't find her anymore.. Gawd, they are are so camouflaged!

Alright, I've done a bit more research on gentian violet's cancer-causing potential but I haven't yet done research on malachite green's to compare. But from reading the California propositon 65 document about GV (North Americans incl. some Canadians will recognize this as the law that causes some products they buy to be labelled with "known to the state of California to cause cancer", including the exact product I bought) it seems that the risk of cancer is related to internal use, either injection or ingestion. Speaking of ingestion, I think GV bans mainly relate to its use in treating fish/shrimp/etc. which are intended for human consumption, because of the above. And in countries where GV isn't banned for this purpose, it does seem to get used on various species of shrimp without causing any issue for the shrimp themselves (at least enough so for shrimp farming purposes). See the following: In February, the FDA Began Rejecting Imported Shrimp for Gentian Violet and Chloramphenicol (2022 article by Southern Shrimp Alliance) FDA Starts New Calendar Year by Refusing Antibiotic-Contaminated Shrimp from Three BAP-Certified Indian Processors and Adding a BAP-Certified Vietnamese Processor to Import Alert (2024 article by Southern Shrimp Alliance) Southern Shrimp Alliance and some other organizations have tons of other articles in this vein, but I'd be here for a while and would end up writing an absolutely massive post if I were to link every instance I found of articles mentioning shrimp shipments with gentian violet and/or leucogentian violet registering as contaminants. That being said, I know shrimp farmed for consumption and dwarf shrimp are often somewhat distantly related (in fact, the one time a shrimp's species name is listed that I can see, it's the prawn sp. Macrobrachium rosenbergii, who at best occupies the same infraorder as Neocaridina davidi but nothing nearer), but this at least gives a slightly better way of guessing whether it will be safe for aquarium dwarf shrimp or not than my bladder snail anecdote from the OP.

I would hazard a guess that perhaps those eggs were unfertilized and thereby unviable? Did the eggs change colour, usually yellow to grey as the yolks used up, or any eyes in the eggs. Is your water ok, using RO remineralised and the parameters in range, as I have heard others say that if the water isn't good it can 'force' a molt? How is it going overall, do you have a good size colony in the tank, you may have reached 'maximum occupancy' as a tank can only support so many occupants.

Hello folks,  The current problem I am having is that my Taiwan bee shrimp are molting before all their eggs have hatched.  Often the shrimp keep the eggs for 40+ days.  During that time, they lose about half or so, either due to dropping or duds or whatever.  Shortly before molting they look to have about a dozen left, and then they molt with about half a dozen eggs still on the shell.  Then the other shirmp will come and eat the shell.  These last few times, I have been getting around 0-3 surviving babies per batch.  I figure I can make the eggs hatch faster by raising the water temperature more (currently around 68F, which is already a few degrees higher than I used to keep it) or make the shrimp grow slower by feeding them less (protein).  Currently I feed Shrimp King complete every other day, and also a small dab of Shrimp Fit alternating days.  Maybe I can start alternating with more vegetable food like mulberry?  or just decrease the amount of food?

Yeah, cancer risk was a thing I'd seen mentioned a lot when looking into gentian violet briefly. I kinda just figured it might only be as bad as the cancer risk of malachite green as well, but maybe I should look into it more. I've been doing a pretty good job of not getting it on my skin and also avoiding dunking my unprotected hands into the tank water while treating my fish at least, though. Maybe I'll just not use it once I'm done this course of medication anyways, because I know a store I can sometimes get to that's pretty distant carries both malachite green and methylene blue, and in pretty large quantities.
    • jayc
Can't help you with Gentian Violet, sorry. It is banned in Australia violet for potential toxicity, and even possible cancer risks. I thought it was banned in Canada as well. At least, you now know why there isn't much info on gentian violet medication and it's use. But keep an eye on the snails after a week. If it affects the snails, it might not kill them immediately. So keep checking for up to a week. Much safer options out there. No point risking your own life over unsafe products.
