snowball x davidi observations?

Featured Replies

Hey all, after seeing @inverted's stunning snowballs we were chatting about what might come of crossing snowballs with other neos. Found a few neat threads here from a while back on this topic, but I'm wondering, does anyone have any updates or more recent observations?

I'm gonna try putting a snowball female in with blue/black davidi and see how that goes. If she berries and they hatch right, I'm expecting a ton of wild reverts but perhaps something interesting as well. Worst case scenario she just looks fantastic in the tank as a contrast to the blue/blacks. But fingers crossed!

Usually when you mix the neo's you start to regress on the colouring. You may get something different but that's a lot of culling to be had.

Did your investigations get much further on this mix?

Oh damn. I actually thought this time someone was posting actual results rather than more speculation. I'm not sure how many times I've seen this question asked... surely someone has actually tried the cross by now. We all know what SHOULD happen and I reckon the lack of any published results anywhere is pretty solid confirmation. You're getting culls.

Yeah. I have cross many cherries and all have resulted in culls. I just haven't had the opportunity to play with Snowballs yet. They don't seem to be that popular?

@NoGi what do you do with your culls? What size are your shrimp when you begin to cull your shrimp?

In my 4', I have a glass split in the middle of the tank so my culls are on the LHS. Any that meet my criteria get moved to the RHS. If a cull appears on the RHS, off to the LHS they go.

With my Bloody Mary I have 2 physical tanks, one with culls and the other for my selective shrimp.

If the shrimp is really bad, not even worthy of keeping as a cull, they get squished and fed back to the population.

For the lower grade shrimp I have I put them to work in my catfish tanks to clean the tanks. They are so good in keeping it clean as they go on the merry way and breed in the tanks as well. From my low grades they have produced some exceptional shrimp which are caught and placed back into the main tank.

I even have some surviving in my cichlid tanks, due to the lesser coloration some seem to be able to survive , however they do become snacks along they way.

I had some mishaps with their breeder box while I was moving and most of them mixed in my randoms and culls so I have to start from scratch -_- I do still have a couple that look kinda promising - blue tinted and red tinted in a kind of groovy way. But I'm not sure what they'll be like as adults. The original plan was to cross back with snowballs several times over. I'll see if I can try again!

Keep us updated. This sounds very interesting.

I would guess that if you were to cross two different species of two different color varieties (snowball x black), you would end up with something like a wild type color.

However, if you breed two different species of similar/same color types (i.e. blue pearl to blue velvet???), then the resulting offspring should, in theory, be the same "mutations" as the parents.

But this would depend on the genetics....

Would be great if you could share what the parents looked like and what the offspring look like!
