The Taiwan/Shadow Bee class saw some magnificent entries this year. 3rd place went to Adam Blackburn for a group of young Extreme (Full Red) Rubies. This was a nice uniform group of shrimp with great colour. Unfortunately they were a bit shy and most of the tanks didn't have clean glass... you can really see it in these pics. Still, I wanted to share the images with you all. 2nd place went to Shrimp My Tank for some exceptional Blue Bolts which just loved the camera. A lovely dark female was awarded Best Individual in show. Congratulations Shannon! 1st place went to our own Jamie Newbreed for an awesome group of Shadow Pandas... congratulations on a winning this demanding category! Unfortunately these were never where I needed them to be and I don't have many shots.

@kizshrimp@fishmosy @BiGGiE (been awhile since David has been on here!) The originator of Shrimp Club Vic and Shrimp Championships. Top Bloke too!! The BlueBolt Female was Shannon's entry, now gone to a very happy shrimper in Victoria. (Not me ?) @lodo James and his partner Madeline were a driving force behind Shrimp Champs, keeping us all on track. @Gbang is the Master Grinner @newbreed @fishmosy @Squiggle

The Tiger class was somewhat lightly represented at the show but 1st place was taken by Bob Marsh with some very well-coloured Tangerine Tigers (Caridina serrata). These beautiful shrimp were also awarded Reserve Best in Show. Congratulations Bob! 2nd was awarded to SMT for some lovely OEBT (Caridina mariae) that I suppose were Royals with very deep rusty females. Unfortunately I couldn't get a single photo of those shrimp, not even a terrible one. The "Any Other Shrimp" class is exactly what it sounds like. We'd love to see many more Aussie shrimpers submit something for show so that we could expand the range of classes but right now this is where Pintos, Fancy Tigers and anything else that doesn't fit the previous classes (Native Species; Cherries; Crystal Bees; Shadow/Taiwan; Tigers) have to compete against each other. SMT was awarded first in this class for some nice Black Pinto, of which I only managed to photograph 1 shrimp. They were a really nice group. Barry Lee was awarded 2nd for some lovely red Fancy Tigers which were a fantastic group of shrimp. 3rd went to Newbreed for a group of fancy tigers which again I couldn't get a pic of. What an anticlimax...

I was in a bit of a rush when I replied ... You're probably wondering why BEP is a good alternative to ADA. I have used many types of substrate, ADA amazonia I, II, benibachi, Up Aqua, etc. And I always return to CAL BEP. I'll just give you a quick summary. CAL BEP will buffer pH to 6.5 or lower (if you use more substrate). Just like ADA. Low ammonia release, unlike ADA, so much faster cycling. Very clean, no twigs, and floaties, unlike ADA. Buffers pH just like ADA, and I have 1 tank that is still buffering after 2 years. My other tanks that use BEP is still young. ADA's buffering lifespan is also very good. I had tanks 5+ years that was still buffering well. But BEP is shaping up to last just as long. Only time will tell. Substrate granules are rounder than ADA or Benibachi. Looks better plus better for ground dwelling fish like corys. Minimal clouding when replanting. Doesn't cloud as much as ADA. Does not crumble into fine dirt when crushed. It will still crush if pressed hard, but not as soft as ADA. Cons: Costs more than ADA. But then again, since you are in the US, it might be a very similar price to ADA. We get killed with shipping costs in Australia. ?

In the Crystal Shrimp Class 3rd place went to newbreed for some CRS with very good red legs - these were shrimp from Ineke. 2nd went to Adam Blackburn for some very nice CBS with great black and also with good legs. I thought these were one of the standouts of the show. First pic is of a nice male. And finally, first place was awarded to Barry Lee for a group of PRL which unsurprisingly beat the standard Crystal lines entered. Congratulations Barry!

Hi guys, well it's been a while and I hope you're all doing well. I'm back with pics from this years champs hosted by SCV which was a great success again and seems to be really building some momentum now. It was great to meet even more interstate shrimpers, put more names to faces and of course catch up with our old shrimp mates again. We hope to see you there next year too! I'm going to start by posting some pics from the Native Species class, a class which is generally under-appreciated and under-represented in both the show and the wider hobby. Hope you like them... First 2 pics are Riffle Shrimp (Australatya striolata) from Paul O'Leary having a feed on my food formula. Pic 3 is another Riffle from fishmosy which was from the group which collected 1st place in the Native class. Remaining pics are Caridina sp. indistincta C also from fishmosy. A beautiful species which was still colouring back up by the end of the show. Imagine how good they look fully settled in. Also ready to go are pics from the Cherry Shrimp class. Enjoy!

View Member regards, skfadmin Hi everyone and thanks for the approval to the page. I have had tropical fish for over 30 years and only been dabbling in shrimp for the last 7 years. Being fairly rural, we only have access to rainwater and bore (very drinkable, just like spring water) so have had some concerns trying to venture into other species where water conditions need to be a little different and consistent. Looking to tap into the wealth of knowledge that is no doubt in here and discuss tips/myths and everything in between. Cheers.

Orange Rili Shrimp from master Cherry breeder gbang. You might care to refer back to my shots from the championships last year to see just how far he's progressed this line in only a year. Well done mate! Amazing Back-line full Carbon Shrimp also from gbang. A difficult trait to stabilise but the master is hard at work and if anyone can do it, he can. Next, the Sunkist/Orange Cherries really jumped out as excellent examples of that line. Blue Dreams were poorly behaved and I was lucky to get any shots at all. Fire Reds, lovely shrimp that need no introduction. They were beauties. In a league of their own, Bloody Mary Shrimp (from guess who) took out first in the Cherry Shrimp class and also Best In Show. Congratulations gbang!! At the top left of the final pic you can see the quality of the males benched in this group. An outstanding line of Cherry Shrimp.

As for when will it be in Sydney? Who knows?? We are fortunate in Victoria to have the Aquarium Society building to use for such events. We are looking to set next year's event date within the next two weeks, to allow plenty of time for people to work on entries and breeding programs, maybe arrange travel arrangements and take advantage of cheaper flights too! Something that I am really pleased about is some very important stats. Last year out of 23 Tanks we had one shrimp loss. This tank was filled using entrants ro and own filter. This year with 30 tanks we had no losses. Sadly one loss in transit on the way down but that was out of our hands. This year we had only two locally benched in entries, majority were entries posted in from within Victoria and interstate. Next year we will have much more notice and better timeframes for entries etc. Plus longer tank setup timeframes too. So please all give some consideration to entering in 2017. Surely if my lines can win awards, our members should take out most categories. ?

So in April I decided to convert an already established 40cm cube to be repurposed for a Native Zebra tank. The tank he been running for two months previously so a decent biofilm had grown on the tank walls. I removed 80% of the substrate and left driftwood, cholla, needle leaf Java and some flame moss. I run a hang on back filter containing mini Bakki balls which has a slight ph raising capability. Just for additional filtration I added some mini siporax media into the tank. This has become handy, as it is white, the shrimp actually stand it against it. Unlike when they blend in against the soil. My tanks all run on rainwater with a ph around 6.5. TDS of the setup has been constant between 35-40. Temp around 20-21. view from above some of the first inhabitants when added in April. Noticed the red colouration, but hd explained to me it could be more a stress colouration. This changed over time to crisp black and white. I do a waterchange of approximately 15l a week. Usually all in one go, and without adjusting temperature. This seems to inspire activity. Main reason for this thread, is after chatting to Ben on weekend, I thought I needed to catalogue my results, even as limited as they have been. I was fortunate to add some extra shrimp to the colony recently. These have slightly different markings arising from where they were located. And today for the first time since having them, I added a food that brought them altogether for the very first time. They never roam or hang together in groups of more than say two at a time. Until today. Luckily I cleaned the glass this morning so the macro lens could work fairly efficiently. First inhabitants (today) Side by side. New and old. Newer additions So pleased to see them congregating together today! The food is not yet widely available but has been specially formulated by one of our SKF members. Will try to update when I can. ?

I needed to know which wafer is the most water stable in my current arsenal. I set up the below experiment using foods that I already have at hand, thus some brands that I like more had more foods to test from than others. I put 6ml of RO/DI water, remineralised with SS GH/KH+ GH8, KH3 in a petri dish. I then placed a small food wafer, or a piece of a food wafer that was larger of equivalent size in the petri dish for 24 hours. Room temperature set to 19.5 degrees Celsius. I used a disposable pippette to drip some water over the wafers throughout the day to simulate water current. I also moved the wafers around slightly with sharp microscope tweezers to simulate shrimp picking at them. I included a few non-water stable food options as I had them already and wanted to see the effect it had on the water. They have not been included in the rankings as they either turn to powder or are powder. List of foods tested in random selection arranged from left to right on my kitchen counter: Benibachi Kale food (Not a competitor in this test) Benibachi Golden Mineral food (Not a competitor in this test) Benibachi Golden Food Lowkeys Spirax (Not a competitor in this test) Lowkeys Hiden No Esa Secret food EbitaBreed Spinach Tab EbitaBreed Quattro II EbitaBreed Hinomaro Bentou Shrimp King Pea and leaf Loops Shirakura Shrimp Ball food (Hard Wafer) Shirakura Shrimp Ball Food ( Soft wafer) Boss Shrimp Crack Hikari Algae Wafers Shrimp Nature Green (Not a competitor in this test) Mosura Brood Care Taiwan Breeders Fermented food ( the Vegetarian one) Without further ado: BEST water Stable wafers: #1 EbitaBreed Spinach Tab, Quattro and Hinomaro Bentou ( all 3 were exceptionally stable), tied with Lowkeys Hiden No Esa - these wafers looked good as new after 24 hours. #2 Shrimp King Pea&Leaf loops. The leaf loops were just as stable as the number one ranks, but the pea loop was a bit more squishy to the touch. #3 Taiwan Breeders Fermentation food tied with Shirakura Shrimp Ball food ( Soft and hard wafer) Least Water Stable Wafers: #1 Hikari Algae Wafers #2 Boss Shrimp Crack ( I have to mention that the centre of the wafer was reasonably firm after 24 hours, but the dissolving exterior compared to other food wafers was noticeable) #3 Mosura Brood Care Benibachi Golden food was in the middle, thus no mention in the rankings. Photos below are of the foods after 24 hours. Close-ups in last 3 pics are :EbitaBreed Spinach Tab, Shrimp King Pea&Leaf loops, Boss Shrimp Crack.

  40. KeenShrimp
Yep, I have to choose between buying shrimp stuff or a fancy camera and the shrimp always win- please excuse the photo quality. This tank is now 2.5 months old: It's not pretty at all as I cannot cover bits with plants and am too worried about upsetting these guys to scape it. The ramshorns will be removed at some stage, but I am messing with the tank as little as possible. I was very nervous about starting a Sulawesi tank as I read that they need stability. I wanted overfiltration, and as much of it that I could stuff in a small tank as I could. So I took a 29 litre Animates desktop tank and altered the filtration: I cut a 2cm x 1cm window where the filter intake slot was and covered it with nylon mesh and coral glue to increase water circulation (the solution does not look as classy as it is efficient). I also wanted something better than a sponge filter as my second filter: I bought an Acrylic corner filter: upon receiving it I noticed that the factory didn't even put intake slots in the filter, so it was just blowing bubbles and not circulating any water at all. I cut my own holes, rearranged the sponges so that shrimplets can't get sucked in. Then I stuffed that puppy with Eheim substratPro and a few other bits (yup, all I need now is a fake Nemo, suspended from fishing line to complete the plastic look :(, but it works like a charm and that water is crystal clear. Pisces black inert quarts in the bottom. MarinePure filter media in the built-in filter. I have to thank very patient Chelsea @The Tech Den: I emailed her explaining that I wanted a reef shelf/base rock that I could prop up and grow algae on and have the shrimp hang upside down at the bottom- she emailed me photos and measurements and we found perfect rocks for cheap as chips! Next I harvested every algae type from 4 other tanks and stirred it into the water. 6 weeks later, I had lovely algae cover over the large rock. The corals in the photo are genuine coral skeletons. I use Sulawesi 8.5 due to improved formulation, and now I am a sucker for boiling the salt solution mix on the stove for an hour when mixing my water, but the shrimp are looking very happy. If you have not used SaltyShrimp Sula 8.5 before: that stuff does not dissolve, no matter how much air you pump into a bucket it will be as white and cloudy as skim milk! I boil it on the stove, use 3 times the recommended amount, let it stabilize for a week with a heater and ensure that GH is 8 before it goes near the tank. The water is then crystal clear and the sediment has sunk to the bottom of the bucket. The shrimp photo below are of Bonnie and Clyde. They went hiding when I took the insulating towels off the tank ( it's freezing in Canberra). The breeder of these beauties is @JPN07- how gorgeous are those blue dots on the body? They get fed every 3 days with Shrimpy Daddy Sinewy cereal. Micro amounts of trace minerals/nutrients and probiotic solution is added every day as well as weekly minerals ( ShrimpyDaddy) and Vivace (ShrimpyDaddy). I will be getting more Cardinals soon so that I can have an actual little colony.

Lani, I am usually lucky with shrimp but won't hold my breathe on domesticating them. If our other members haven't cracked the code yet, I personally don't hold out a lot of hope! But fingers crossed. I will just keep up the water changes and avoid any major imbalances and see what the Zebras decide to do. Always an excuse for one more tank, what are we all like?? ?

To be honest. Aside from ph and tds, I have not tested other attributes. Thanks mate! When I originally got them I was told how crisp their colours would become, and I must admit I had my doubts. But thankfully over time they have settled and are looking good. And this is the first time I have had them right at tank front for macros. Another great Shrimpy thing to add to my fun week!!

Apologies for lack of updates and further info.. Plants used in this setup were as follows: Alternanthera Reinicki Monte Carlo Green Pennywort Bacopa Caroliana Bacopa Monieri Rotala colorata (my new favourite) Cryptocoryne lucens Cryptocoryne lutea Final tank line up from left to right: Flexi Mini Atledtis E6 Aqualighter Nano Up Aqua ProZ 30cm I also added some Najas on moss ledges and a Buce in each tank. The Najas was because these tanks are now home to guppy breeding projects. as the water has evaporated quickly I have had to move the moss ledges lower and the Najas isn't in finest form. individual tank shots to follow this afternoon. ? (we are six-seven weeks into project) Flexi Mini tank good biofilm growth and many plants, except green Pennywort, responding well. Atledtis E6 again good biofilm and great plant growth Aqualighter Nano Biofilm growth also good, great colours coming off Reinicki especially. Up Aqua ProZ 30cm overall good growth and biofilm. So all plants were added same day and majority are still thriving. No ferts have been added and the tanks hve been running on Shirakura Red Bee Sand. Azoo Mignon HOB filter with 3 Marine Pure spheres in each. Temps at 23-24. I am wrapt that the Rotala colorata is showing good red color at new growth. For about four weeks it stayed mainly green growth, as it has settled the redness is back. images don't do it justice. But my favourite plant of recent times.

Dennerle states that they do not put any cheap fillers in their shrimp food and that they also believe in full disclosure of ingredients so that you know exactly what you are putting in your shrimp tank. The products are Made in Germany according to their rigorous quality standards that Germany prides itself on. I have bought quite a few varieties and there is one common thing that stands out: all the food smells fresh. Even the Mineral food that is packed with Green lip mussel, smells like fresh seafood, unlike most other food brands that smell as though they were made with rotten fish and animal byproducts. I understand that a fermented food will smell fermented, but for other brand shrimp foods to smell rotten when it is not a fermented food, and for the Dennerle food to smell this fresh and pleasant, it really makes me think... The food is very interestingly shaped: small rings instead of the usual food pads. This is a good design as shrimp can eat at the edges without wasting the centre. Yellow rings are the peas, green ones are the leafy ones. Dennerle recommends one loop per 15 shrimp. This is the most entertainment I have had during feeding in a long time: the larger shrimp are strong enough to just lift the loops and try to scamper away with them. The easiest way to hold it for them is to hold it like a wheel, so very entertaining seeing a couple of adult shrimp on unicycles moving about!? I have noticed that the shrimp fight over the green leaf loops more than the yellow pea ones. Ingredients: yellow peas 44%, mulberry leaves 33%, walnut leaves 11%, wheat protein, Rosemary. The Pros: The shrimp like it a lot: TB, Tiger, Neo and Natives are drawn to it straight away Holds shape well. In reasonable form the next day in the tank- the yellow pea ones go a bit more squishy Available in Australia on ebay at a competitive price Minimally altered ingredients fresh, sweet smell packet is packed very full minimal wastage the quality is superb and almost all the loops are intact, very few broken ones The Cons: Due to the loop shape, some loops don't sink immediately as an air bubble gets caught in the middle and then float on top. I have a way around this: I throw the loops into the tank at great speed after taking aim...? I will post the reviews of other Dennerle products in the next few months. I am hooked on the quality. After working my way through my mountain of shrimp foods I already have, this brand is the only one that I will buy from now on as the quality is exceptional, and so is the freshness. And it does not cost more than the other popular trusted brands I have been buying. Shrimp King Pea & Leaf loops get ???? and a half/ 5 shrimp tails. This is as fresh as a dried food will ever get.

Hi guys, I moved a few tank inhabitants around and have noticed something interesting: I moved OEBT mixed grades in with Pumpkin cherries thinking the colour combo would look awesome ( I have to say, it does ?) : some of my blonde tigers that are clear or that displayed a pale blue while in a blue tiger- only tank, have now turned light orange as they forage together in the tanks and there are more pumpkin cherries than there are tigers for now. The shrimp are very healthy, my parameters are are stable and exactly where I want them to be. Shrimp populations are quite small. This is quite similar to what I have noticed in my other tanks : my large DAS females turn a pale hue of the coloured shrimp they hang out with : one in my tiger tank is quite an impressively light blue colour for a native, another DAS that hangs out with orange rilis sometimes goes orange-ish. I suspect it might be the desire to camouflage themselves in the group from predators? I have large Otocinclus groups...just speculation here. Does anyone have this happening in their tanks? At this stage I am unsure of whether the blonde tigers are staying orange, or reverting back to blonde/ light blue throughout the day...
  50. ineke
I know that substrate colour can influence the colour of the Neocaradina group - when you use a light substrate the shrimp go paler possibly to blend in with the substrate and conversely if you use a darker substrate they become darker. However the Tigers have been surprising a lot of us by their ability to change colour from tank to tank. I think we have shown how Disciples Tigers have changed colour completely in several different buyers tanks, we think due to change in PH but now with your experience perhaps it is a camouflage effect to not stand out. They are a fascinating group of shrimp indeed!
