Gigantic Tibee

Recommended Posts

There's a strain of Tibee, originating from OEBT x Mishling, that's enormous. ATM, at 7-8 month's, its just past 30mm...

It's pattern has potential, and I've been trying to X it back to a BB, but suspect it/they maybe sterile ? Any other members experiencing this ?

So why do these TiBee grow so big when Tigers Mischlings aren't? Very nice btw!

That's an interesting pattern BB. I like my shrimp small though - you could eat that one. No experience with Tibet yet so no further comment.

Not sure, just a strain I presume...other Tiger breeder have this strain as well. Interestingly, it's leg pattern is striped, which I really like....., so keen to keen some F1's with my BB, then KK, then WR.....

Some sterile invertebrates grow massive due to less energy spent on reproductive maintenance. I know it happens in oysters, but I'm not so sure about shrimp

Thanks for that info....great to have a possible reason/theory to any abnormalities ! Will definitely monitor it's development, as I'm desperate and trying in vain to get some of it's characteristics...

Striped legs...much more pronounced/banded on sight.....lost it's intensity with the iphone !

Some organisms can grow larger and be sterile also because the number of chromosomes in the organisms cells is greater than it would normally have.

Like a tetraploid daylily?

Exactly like that, usually organisms are diploid.

Yes, but one can breed a Tetraploid Lilly with another Tetraploid Lilly, just not the Diploid one. I have males and female giants and they haven't bred yet, Some look like they have half a saddle?

A Giant TB, that would be soooo awesome!

If you could get these to breed could they be used to create a line of shrimp that produced a larger number of offspring

Have them in both my BB & Tibee tanks for months, BUT no berries yet :crushed: .... thinkin they are sterile.

That is awesome bb. A new line of 10cm shrimp would be cool, but then we'd need bigger tanks to house them lol.

Cheers mick

One interesting thing he mentioned was "Bacteria pressure", which I guess just means number of bacteria around.  Yet I see all these other videos from shrimpkeepers bragging about how much bacteria their filtering system holds. Also interesting is no mention of using anti-biotics to treat bacterial infection.  I think that has fallen out of favor recently.

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.
