Filtration setup sponge vs top filter

Featured Replies

Howdy all;

I have revamped all my tanks. Ihave now new setups with 40 and 60 liters tanks.

The 40 liters have a led lighting, no cover, and a filtration with bio-chemical round sponge filter with air bubbles.

The 60 liters hav also Leds lighting, covers, and a top filter.

I have noticed that the 40 liters are cooler than the 60liters, about 3-4 °C less, which is intersting.

I do believe that's because the biochemical sponge is bubble air driven and doesn't need an immersed pump. This is probably because there is no pump inside the tank, so no heat source, that the 40I are cooler. What d'you think?

I think about getting rid of the top filters and putting sponges filter in the 60 liters too. Though, would the sponge filters be enough?

Yep the pump would likely be a source of heat. You could run two or three sponge filters if you felt you needed more filtration. In fact I'd probably recommend it anyway simply for the extra surface area for the shrimp. Alternatively you could even go hamberg-matten (HM) filter.

There are alot of successful breeders who only run sponge, for me the more filtering media the better.
