  1. Shrimp proofing your fish tank for using insecticide bombs. Was taught this from 2OFUS . I have suffered the catastrophe of losing a tank full of shrimp after having to bomb for cochroaches in a house we rented a while ago and left my air pumps on and my tank unprotected. Here is how you can successfully bomb for cochroaches and fleas safely without an impact on your shrimp. What you need - Lots of cling wrap. Time Towels and sheets . Step 1 Step one is to wrap your entire tank(s) in cling wrap. I did this a with two layers of cling wrap which cover the glass and over the lids. You want to ensure there are no gaps in your cling wrap. Step 2 Wrap some wet old bed sheets around the top of your tank or utilise wet some towels. You then want to place the towels over the top of the tank, the idea of the sheets and towels being wet is to catch any of the pesticide particles and have them settle on the towel as opposed to entering any gaps you cant see. I utilized 3 towels for extra precaution Step 3 Repeat step 1 and wrap another layer of cling around the tank and towels. . . Step 4 Turn off all air pumps and wrap them in cling wrap. The last thing you want is any pesticide from the spray landing n your pump and being pushed into the water column when you turn the pumps back on. Step 5 Wrap you cabinet in cling wrap, my cabinet is an open back so was imperative that i covered it. You want to ensure any gaps in the doors and what not are covered. . Step 6 Wrap any items which go into your tank in cling wrap or remove them from the room which is being sprayed. This might include things such as nets, gravel vacs, air hosing and even containers holding your food. You do not want pesticide on the outside of your container and you touch it before feeding your shrimp. Another big one is Buckets! Last thing you want is insecticide in a bucket and you do a water change! Step 7 Wear gloves or wash your hands thoroughly after removing the cling wrap and towels. It sounds like overkill but the last time i utilized this method was to deal with a flea infestation and would not put my shrimp before my families well being. Thankfully utilizing this i was able to keep both safe without 1 loss my shrimp.

  3. The experimental tank is at 3mths(12 weeks) now with no deaths & plenty of breeding. Also, as long as you have a good biofilm you will be right. I know people who only feed once a week & let the biofilm do the rest, so if your daughter-in-law should be right. I can't stress this enough to you & I know you struggle to listen but do not keep moving your shrimp!! They will get way more stressed than if they only get fed once a week(even though that won't be happening, but I hope you get my point) I know you worry & will worry the while time you're away but unless something drastic happens that should be fine with minimal daily care. I love how you start this thread every time you go on holidays, I think it's awesome that you are about your shrimp so much! Great stuff Shrimp Mamma! p.s. Don't move your shrimp!!

  8. This is the recommended benibachi tank set up.... Setting up a new aquarium ready for shrimp has never been so easy, thanks to Benibachi. For a basic set up you are going to need 5 items, Benibachi Mineral Powder, Benibachi BeeMax, Benibachi Fulvic Grain, Benibachi Active Water and Benibachi Black Soil. Step By Step Guide Sprinkle a generous layer of BeeMax on the base of the aquarium. Add a thin layer of substrate over the Beemax. Spread a generous layer of mineral powder over the substrate. Now add the remaining substrate to achieve your desired depth. (recommended substrate thickness of 2-4″ in total) Now sprinkle the entire packet of Fulvic Grain over the substrate. Connect your filter, lighting and air stone to the aquarium. Fill the aquarium with reverse osmosis water, making sure you do not disturb the substrate when doing so. Add your moss and any selected hardscape such as rocks and wood. Now add the Benibachi Active Water to help kick start the bacteria cycle in the aquarium. Now let the aquarium cycle until you get readings of 0 for ammonia and nitrite. Add the shrimp when you are happy with water conditions. It really is as easy as that! When filling the aquarium for the first time it is fine to use 100% pure RO water. The combination of Benibachi Mineral Powder, Fulvic Grains and Benibachi substrate in the aquarium will help buffer the water to the desired water parameters. Personally, I just sprinkle the entire tank base with the mineral powder, and then the soil....always use RO. Tap water will prematurely exhaust the buffering capacity of the soil.
