Not a single death after I started the treatment. It prevented the infection to spread and also cured the infected. I also decided to treat the neocaridina tank that had occacional deaths even they did not have similar visible symptoms when they died. I did not want to take chances that it would spread again. Now I start to feel that I'm back on the track and can again enjoy this hobby. I have disinfected and dried the tanks that had total population wipeout and started a new cycle. I will wait at least a month before adding any shrimp. This will give me time to think what shrimp I will get in them.

I think the case often is that you dont read and learn about diseases before you have to deal with them. There will be a lot of casualties before you can figure out what is wrong (this forum really helped me out with that part) and then get your hands on some medication.

Since I last posted I think every female shrimp has carried eggs and produced babies? What a turn around in breeding activity. You'd think someone had spoken to the shrimp and told them to get busy as it seemed to happen overnight. Other shrimpkeepers I've spoken to have reported similar. The Mini M is full of shrimplets and everyone seems happy. I'll post some photos later on. In other news, I changed up my 30C. Since I feel confident in growing plants reasonably well now, I wanted to try my hand at creating a nice scape. Let me know what you think.

I have now pretty much set up the shrimp tank afresh. The layout isn't 100% yet as I am testing a piece of rock for the week which I will test if it has any affect on Ph at the weekend when it has been in its tub of water for a wee? I set the heater going yesterday and as per JayC have turned it up for the cycle, and the 2 filters are running with sponges from other tanks. Most of the plants/wood are from before in the same tank. I put a small amount of Bacter AE and fish food into the tank as well today. Parameters today, TDS 213, ammonia 1, nitrite 0, nitrate 25 (these are the only tests I have done as it is just day 1 of running. As I am using RO water remineralised I don't expect I will test GH, KH, Ph at this early point but I can adjust those easy enough later down the line once cycled should they be out of sync, though they shouldn't (in theory), and adjusting the TDS is easy. I am planning to rinse the betta fish sponges in 4L of used betta water and dumping that in the shrimp tank on friday, tanks are next to each other so that will be soooo easy! That actually shouldn't affect the parameters much anyway? I will then run it as a set up tank and do 2L water change/maintenance each thursday (back to my old shedule) - tank will have about 26L of water in it (more substrate this time so 2 litres less water). If I am doing anything wrong or have missed/forgotten something I will be pleased to hear from anyone? Oh! and I will be getting at least a fixed thermometer this time, and will look into the device that JayC and KMS have recommended at some later stage when it is all up and running, though I did take a quick look and haven't seen any in the UK yet. I plan to get a strip thermometer that you stick on and it changes colour to show what the temperature is, as these are inoffensive to look at and I should be able to view them easily/often from where I normally sit and they can be stuck on the side instead of the front (which I see from my normal seat). I don't know how good/accurate they are though but it is only to indicate a problem so I don't have to go through this devastation, mine and the shrimps, again? https://www.pro-shrimp.co.uk/aquarium-thermometers/1072-jbl-digital-aquarium-thermometer-4014162614063.html?search_query=thermometer&results=44 Simon Day 2, ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 25 Day 3, ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 50 tds 221

G'day all, I have noticed that some of my Darwin Algae Shrimp and NQ Algae Eater Shrimp in my new 15 gallon tank are displaying an orange colour near the head (I think it is its organs?) I have attached photos. At least 4 out of 7 from what I can tell have the orange colour. I've had the 4 Darwin's for almost a year now and I've never noticed the orange but they were in a small algae covered tank and they were hard to spot and tended to blend in with th green. The 3 NQ Algae Eaters are new as of ~2 weeks ago. In fact I posted a thread in this forum asking for a shrimp ID because one of the NQs didn't look like one. When I first noticed the orange, I thought it looked familiar and now looking back at the pic of the shrimp I shared there, it has the orange colouration! Now I haven't seen any dead or sickly shrimp. They all seem normal and active and molting fine. I have read the Shrimp Diseases and Diagnosis thread but don't see any other symptoms. Just in case however i thought I'd ask, so that I can take early action if need be. I'm pretty sure that apart from that first NQ with the orange colouration, the other shrimp did not have the orange but now they do. So it seems to be spreading unless I didn't notice it before. What are people's thoughts?

Just read all of this thread. Sorry you've had dramas with this tank Simon. Hopefully the YKK do better. I have Boraras Brigittae too and love them (I assume thats what your mosquito Rasboras are). They're a stunning fish and not skittish at all in my experience.

Ah, I've never had them in a tank with shrimp, sorry if I provided misleading advice. I've found that if I cycle my tanks with plants, I don't get a crazy bacterial bloom, nor do I get brown diatoms - instead I get hair algae (yaaaaaaaaaaaaaay...)

How's this tank filling in? I ended up getting some plants from Adrian. Thanks for the recommendation.

Treatment for 112 liter tank. Actual water volume 100 liters. Dosage is one tablet of JBL Furanol plus for 25 liters of water. In severe cases dosing can be doubled. Sera bactopur direct has the same nifurpirinol active substance if you cannot get Furanol. I got a very clear instruction that you should never dose less than instructed because you can just create resistent bacterial strains. Before the medication I did a 25% water change. According to instructions you can do up to 50%. In my case I took some RO water to a one liter jug and put four tablets to dissolve. They dissolve very quickly. Then I pour the mixture evenly across the surface. You can also pour it where you have best waterflow. Now I wait for five days for the treatment to take effect. During this period only little feeding. I gave some food on day two that was dipped in dilluted furanol. From here on is how I plan to continue. I will update after treatment if there was any changes. On the sixt day a 50% water change. If there still would be symptoms I do a new treatment on the sevent day. During the water change on the sixt day I will clean filters to get rid most of the med residues. If you have activated carbon this can be used. The treatment will also kill beneficial bacteria so it would be good to dose some nitrification bacteria. Im going to dose Vin's Storm nitrification bacteria just because I have it. Carefull with feeding for next weeks.

Here is a picture of what they have sent me! They sent me this photo and they looks to be a lovely mixture! I already have 2 red wine and a couple of blue steel shrimp and a red bolt - that I know about! I will take a photo or two of them at some point in the tank IF all goes well this time! Simon They're in the tank and all went well with that!
