I'm not a snail expert, but that looks like a Malaysian Trumpet snail.

Unfortunately the stuff that would kill snails also kills shrimps. Trap for snails also trap shrimps. So it's really just picking them out manually, including what Crabby mentioned above.

Ditto. I have them too. Malaysian trumpets. The white on the shell means that there isn’t heaps of calcium in the water, but if you’re only keeping goldfish and these then it’s okay.

Yes thank you. I had a great time off. Almost didn't want to come back, except I have a dog, fish and shrimps to come back to that needed my attention.

What have you been doing? I removed snails by putting out veggies at night and pulling them up in the morning with all the snails. I also squish any bladder snails I see on the glass. Cruel but effective.

LOVING IT! x Fooking snails though. Any way to reduce the size without having to do what I've been doing? x

Hiya all, been a while, thought I'd catch you up. Shrimptopia has become crazy! The varieties I've got are lush. It's got so bad now I have a 12 lt tank I've just set up for breeding. LOVE IT! LOVE SHRIMPLES! x There is literally no-where in my tank I look without smiling. Photo's en-route. x

First the disclaimer - I have no experience with these fish whatsoever so what follows id based on some research on the internet only. The mark seems similar to that caused on some peoples fish caused by heater burn and I see you have a long glass heater so the mark could have been caused by that? The breeding of these fish seems to involve the male cornering the female somewhere, caves or rocks usually and this can be quite aggressive. From the little research I did the male is plumper than the female so this could be a female (looks slim) that a male tried cornering to mate, the mark again looks similar to pictures I saw where the marks were thought to be from mating? Is it just marks on the skin or does it protrude when seen side on from the skin, like fungus? Hopefully someone with experience of these fish will give their thought but this may give you a starting point. Obviously you can eliminate the breeding ritual if you only have the one of these fish etc? I see you have (beautiful) rock which has edges? Love the ember tetras by the way! Simon

Yup, squished quite a few now, been fishing others out. x

I hope there isn't too much damage to the house! Your extreme weather has been a regular feature on the news here in the UK! Simon

Try not to worry and just keep an eye and see if anything changes. I expect (though don't know) breeding may happen more when it is dark???? One of the articles I read said you can get heater guards? Simon

I hope everything is well once the power comes back on and that it isn't off for long? You have to be fast to catch mosquito larvae, they dart down to the bottom of the bucket when they feel threatened (as soon as the water is disturbed by the net) and if there is gunk on the bottom you won't be able to find them. I've had these snails in my tank for over a year and I don't know what kind they are. They're incredibly hardy and unknowingly got them attached to some plants I got at petsmart. If anyone can ID them please help me! I live these guys and they're the only snails that have survived living with my goldfish.

Snails are easy to keep clear as long as you don't mind a few pretty assassin snails in the tank. They do breed but are easy to keep numbers down and much slower breeders, by just removing a few every so often. Most aquarium places sell them or ebay or: https://www.pro-shrimp.co.uk/snails/1600-assassin-snail-clea-helena.html I have them in all my tanks and are quite pretty I think? You don't need many! Some great photos! Simon

Thanks Simon. I hadn’t thought about the heater, that could be a possibility. As could breeding damage, as I have males and caves, though I haven’t seen any breeding behaviour. It does look like marks and not protruding. I’m thinking it’s probably a heater burn, and I think they will go away on their own, yes?

Glad you’re back, hope you had a good time.

Yeah once I have a net I’ll harvest regularly. Mozzies suck. Also thx for that bloodworms tip, that’s awesome! I don’t think I’ll have a problem with leaf litter after last night... flooding and leaves everywhere, hail damage to stuff outside, and electricity is down for 24 hours. Hoping my tanks will be okay. And I’ll get to a local lake soon and find some daphnia I think. Also Simon... Bertie the betta is the best name ?

Ahhhh, I’m following. To be fair, winter here has only had ,”Winter like” wrath for a few day’s. Been around 60-79 degrees F. I’ve also tried a new food, it’s called Rephashy Super Green. The shrimp love it, and you can make homemade shrimp lolli sticks by using bbq skewers! Just saw I lost a shrimp, looks like a moly gone wrong. Bummer. She’ll was shifted oddly, I assume that’s what caused it.

They stop breeding in winter here, though that was compounded by the fact they probably only reached maturity just as winter started, D'OH! I now have to play the annoying waiting game, and probably won't get baby shrimp until April! I just hope I can keep these adults alive until then, otherwise a shopping spree may be in order - desperately holding off from doing that too early................ I am really pleased yours is working so well now though! Simon

Still pretty tiny. I can see patterns, barely, but even that is hard to see. No colors yet. Really? I wonder why your shrimp aren’t breeding?

As JayC says, keep harvesting them, but on the plus side you should get them constantly in your bucket if they are around that area. We have that here as we have lakes (no flow) and so there are loads in summer and I saw one on the inside of a window just a couple of days ago so they are still around here even in winter. I have even had them appear in the small container that the daphnia are kept in indoors. If they are the same as ours they get freakishly big considering they turn into something so small but bertie the betta gets so excited chasing them when they are put in his tank. Keep them well harvested as per JayC! If you can think of somewhere with permanently still water nearby it may be worth seeing if there is daphnia in there, a park or reservoir, or a neighbour or friend with a pond in their garden etc, as long as it is ok to take from it. The daphnia breed prolifically so you don't need much to start a breeding programme? Simon

You don't want to breed mozzies, so harvest regularly. Add some leaf litter into your bucket and eventually bloodworms can be found too.

Power came back on a couple of hours ago. All is okay. Phew. House isn’t tho...
