Thank you jayc, I have ordered some fertilizer. I will use the empty 3' tank for the Moss with nothing else until I see that the Moss is growing and has improved The sick looking Amazon Sword plant I have put in my 5' Aquarium with my fish. I will double the dose for the Moss tank and single dose with the fish and other plants. I really appreciate you help. Cheers Perry

This question applies to both fresh and dried mulberry leaves. I first boil them for about 5 min to soften them up. Then I put it in the tank. Initially my Taiwan Bee shrimp pick at it, but their puny claws are too feeble, so they can't really make a dent and eventually leave. Nobody touches it for the next day or two. Day three it starts to turn yellow and go soft. Occasionally a shrimp will pick at it, but not much. Eventually it grows a clear / white fuzz on it. Occasionally a shrimp will pick at it, but not much. At what point should I just give up and take the leaf out? It seems they're not really interested.

G'day, My daughter has given me a 3' Aquarium with plants. I would very much appreciate it if somebody could verify the plants. There is a heap of Java Moss? Some beautiful & Green some, more Yellow than green. Please could somebody tell me what I need to do to grow all the plant so it will all be green. I will put a small amount in my Shrimp Tank. The other plant I think is Amazon Sword ? Correct? Cheers Perry

So quick update, everything has arrived I need for getting the water right. I also got a JBL proscan and the results are as follows 1st is the tap water 2nd one is from the tank. The nitrates and nitrites are a little hi as they were due a water change yesterday. Does this make more sense than the other results? Going to go down the 100% change route. I can only see 3 cherries this evening but cant see any Bodies so 1 may be hiding. Sent from my SM-N960F using Tapatalk

Hopefully you will get the new shrimps later this week, exciting stuff! They grow fairly quickly! The babies will feed off the sponge so it doesn't surprise me to hear they like it there. Pleased to hear it is going so well! Simon

The babies are showing up more and more, they really like to hang out on the tiny driftwood on the right side, under the sponge filter. I’ve been using your suggestion, and using my pipettes to blow some of the Baby Shrimp, Shrimp Fit into that area when dosing the Glasgarten mixture. The shrimp have not yet arrived, this place doesn’t ship overnight, and the were shipped yesterday. The galaxies my buddy ordered on this order were still in quarantine until yesterday, so it delayed shipping. However, I will give this fish supplier credit, as I’ve never had a casualty from them from anything I’ve ordered, and they throw in plenty of spares( 2-3 on average). They also offer a DOA refund policy. I anticipate them being here Friday or Saturday.

Have the new shrimps arrived yet? Hope you are still seeing plenty of baby shrimps! Simon

Lighting adjusted, apparently blue light may have been waaaaaay too high, causing algae to get worse. More adjustments to try and kill the remainder off. Filter ordered, I went with the HOB as it comes with a predicted and it saves me from having to figure one out on the canister. Furthermore, I plan to keep the sponge filter running as well, as the shrimp love to feed on it, a why not. I’m not worried about the additional equipment being visible, but I do like the extra biofilm/feeding area for the shrimps. Either way, I assume I should Kermit at least till the new filter ,”Seasons.” If I dislike it, I’ll swap for a canister, and move this system to the other tank when I set it up. I received a message the new shrimps shipped! Woo! Hoping they survive the cold snap that has hit us....

I would take it out if it grows a white fuzz. I don't think it's harmful though

Your shrimp is dying, i'm afraid to say. But you have 1ppm of ammonia, that is enough to kill any fish let alone shrimps. Is this a brand new uncycled tank? You should never add any fish or shrimp into a tank that has detectable ammonia. The pH is a bit too high for cherry shrimps as well. They do better closer to the 7.0 pH mark. But the main issue here is the ammonia levels. Do you have another more mature tank that you can move the shrimp into immediately?

If it's only moss in the tank, then you don't need to double dose. Moss don't need much fertiliser.

Yep, that's perfect. You add the dry powder mix to 500ml of water to dissolve it. Dose is 1ml per 40L. You can double the dose if there are no shrimps or fish in the tank.

G'day jayc, Many thank for your informative reply. I have looked on eBay and found this Macro Plant Fertilizer. Would you recommend this if not could you tell me another you would suggest I purchase. Cheers Perry

Hey Sonny, please don't take my post the wrong way. There was no need to apologise. We all start somewhere and we learn along the way. Sometimes it's a trial and error. I was just trying to share some knowledge with tank cycling so that you didn't need to go through trial and error learning. Rather than following youtube blindly with 2 water changes a week, you now know exactly when you need to do water changes. Your specific tank might only need one water change a week while cycling. Or if pH drops too low, it might need more than that. But you are now armed with that info.

It's a moss of some variety, but it's not easy identifying what type of moss when it's all bunched up like that. Java Moss is the most common, so if I was to guess, that's what it is. Moss will grow any where. You can just drop it onto the bottom of the tank, anchor it to a drift wood or rock, or wedge it between ornaments so it doesn't float around. Not quite sure what the other plant is. It could be an Amazon Echinodorus Bleheri sword or a Cryptocoryne Wendtii. The one with brown/yellow spots is a very unhealthy specimen due to nutrient deficiency. If you set up the new tank and let it run with no livestock in it, you can treat the plants with lots of light and Macro fertilisers. The old leaves cannot be saved, but new leaves should be green again. Look for aquarium fertilisers that are labelled Macro or contain Potassium and Phosphate. A fert with Iron and trace elements won't hurt either. An All-In-One fertiliser should have Potassium, Phosphate, Iron and trace elements, so look out for that. Just make sure you change out the water before adding any shrimps in. We don't want to add shrimps into a tank that has too much ferts, as that will have a wildly different water parameter that the shrimps prefer.

Yes. The bacteria will be reduced to suit the load of the tank. Likewise it will increase if there is more inhabitants. But this process is not instantaneous of course. That's why you don't add a huge amount of new tank inhabitants in one go.
