Been keeping aquariums for years, including coral reef tanks(SPS heavy), tropical community tanks, and a few shrimp tanks. Recently set up a Spec v( 3 months ago). Started adding shrimp and they keep dying off. I have NO idea why, and it’s driving me nuts. I have two Amanos in with the Neos, and they are fine and going strong for some reason. Info below, tested last night again, so all levels are current accurate): Tank: Fluval Spec V. lightly planted Substrate: Stratum( Dragon stone and Cholla wood for hardscape) Light: Stock PH: 7.3-7.4 GH:7-8 KH:2-3 TDS:250 Ammonia: Big fat 0. I tested this 2x I shouldn’t be getting any heavy metal issues, and I’m using RO/DI water remineralized with Salty Shrimp Gh/Kh+ Tetras were in temporarily, and have been removed, they were present only to provide a bioload for a short time, relocates to the 75 tropical tank.

Thank you for the response. That picture is from about a month ago, there are now Almond leaves, and a fair amount of buildup/film for them to scavenge. I do feed, but I suppose the larger Amanos could be outcompeting with the Neos. Only a small colony of velvet Blues(6). I’m clearly missing something, but I’m not sure what. Feeding is done with the following: Shrimp King( mixture, I use several types and rotate them). Bug Bites I was planing an order of some new Neos( Orange or blue Rilis), but I’m going to have to hold off. I don’t want to drop in new creatures just to kill them. It is possible the store I bought from had iffy stock? The insight is appreciated, I tend to underfeed from fear of contaminating in such a small tank. Maybe I’ll revisit my feeding habit. Thanks!!

I would say 'room for some new shrimps' but it is probably best to hold off until after the trip to Taiwan at this point. Something to look forward too when you get back and see how the tanks did whilst you are/were away? Simon

THAT'S GREAT NEWS and should make everyones life a lot calmer in the heat! Any idea how many shrimps are in the tank now? Simon

Yep its been hot recently, about 29-35 degree celcius, most of my shrimps died before I got the new DIY chiller, but the new chiller is working great now, temperature of the water now is maintained at 25-26, Previous I have been turning my A/C on time to time when I see the water temperature reach about 28-29 degree celcius with the old chiller. Now the new chiller is working good with no support from the A/C.

Hi, I'm Aradene and based in Australia. I kept guppies and other live breeders for many years as a teen until Black Saturday killed all my tanks, and thus abandoned my hobby. Until a few months ago when a friend gave me one of her old shrimp tanks after years of my admiring them. So now I'm remembering where all my money from my first job went as I dust off the old tanks and make plans to set up more. Currently I'm trying to learn about aquascaping (and why it never worked in my old tanks) and over the moon with my 10 blue dream shrimp in a small 50ltr tank. This weekend I'm hoping to buy a 3ft one to start my aquascaping adventure and put what I've learned into practice by we shall see what happens next.

This would work the best. Move the inverts out to another QT tank and treat the main tank. Especially when fluke treatments can be as long as 3 weeks - initial treatment, and re-treat 3 weeks later. <-- don't forget this 2nd treatment 2-3 weeks later. Inverts are not affected by fluke. just don't pour the water back into the main tank. Just net them. And don't reuse the filer or wood back in the main tank without at least boiling it. Alternatively, you might want to keep the shrimps and snails separate long term.

Hiya guys, thank you very much for your useful info. Really appreciate it. Researched loads, don't know how it's going to turn out, but I feel the need to give the wee ones a fighting chance. sdltbfanuk I'm going to be using a lot of the info you gave me. In my panic, I asked around if anyone had a tank they weren't using. Trust me! Ended up with the biggest thing you could imagine! 250l! Next issue..... (as I think I have the brackish water thing sorted) is how to fill the two holes in the bottom of "Shrimptopia". Any recommendations? I was thinking some real thick PVC or glass with clear silicone sealer. Sorry, I really am a noob, but have fallen for shrimp in a huge way. It's the least of my bad habits. Lol. x

That's quite a setup you have there! I am glad to hear that it is all going well at the moment. Have you had some extreme hot weather since setting up the cooler to see if it will work during really hot spells? Do you know how many shrimps you have in the tank now? I have my shrimp tank to do tomorrow! I am still not sure how it is going at this stage though the nitrates have reduced, but won't rush into getting any more shrimps yet, the ones I want are out of stock anyway, thankfully.......... https://ibb.co/VvS60rx https://ibb.co/Qbp5pbg It seems my tanks is ok now, my DIY chiller has been tested and work, temperature has been maintained at 25-27 degree celcius, the above photo is my current tank and the chiller, combine a aquarium water chiller and a PC water cooler in one.
