Hello folks, I am not well versed on shrimp genetics, but I would like to keep a shrimp tank that is "colorful" without having to do too much culling, or giving away shrimp that are clear or murky. The tank size will only be 3 gallon, so maybe at most a dozen shrimp. Option 1) is what I am currently doing, which is to get one female shrimp of each color, and so they will never breed. This was working ok for a while until one my shrimp "self destructed" by getting berried with unfertilized eggs and dying. (I have a thread about that in the Health and Care forum) Option 2) is to get a bunch of crystal red shrimp and go ahead and let them breed. I don't care too much about fraction of red or white, but hopefully it won't result in a bunch of clear shrimp by the end? Option 3) is to get a bunch of random Taitibee shrimp from a local Craigslist seller and just let them "go at it". I don't know what will happen in this case. Will it also result in a bunch of dud shrimp? I'm not trying to be a breeder or seller, so I don't care about aiming for certain traits. Option 4) is to get a bunch of neo shrimp all the same color (e.g. blue, orange), but my understanding is that the "solid-ness" of the colors will degrade with each generation, and occasionally there will be a shrimp of a different color? Any other ideas I haven't thought of? Thanks

Update. shrimp are still alive and looking healthy. I did look at my salty shrimp and I did in fact use the Gh, not the Gh +Kh. so that's good. Just one question I have. I think I read somewhere that CRS will not breed as frequently in the winter months is this true? thanks everyone

We have a lot of shrimp keepers from the US. They might be able to give you pointers on where to buy/order some good quality shrimp food. But some of the fresh food alternatives can cost virtually nothing. If you bought spinach (good tip there Simon) or zucchinis or carrots for your family to eat, any off cuts can be blanched and used as shrimp food. Flowers from the garden are free, so are some leaves. If you are in doubt over something being safe to feed shrimp or not, raise a post in the Food and Nutrition subforum. We will be more than happy to help you out.
