My assumption would be so that you always have some plants using CO2. I don't know anything about constructing tanks or the plumbing involved for a sump, but it certainly is intriguing to look at.

Just thought I would write up my journey with my CRS. I bought these guys July last year (from Fishmosy) and had them in with my TB for seven months without any berries, super frustrating. After a reset on one of my three foot tanks, I moved the CRS in there by their lonesome and the magic started to happen. The quality of these isn't the best but also not the worst. I recently was very lucky to be a recipient of some 'culls' from Gbang. With these boys in the mix I am expecting to see the quality of offspring increase dramatically over the next few generations. The tank they are in has benibachi soil, eheim 2213, chiller, two sponge filters and two Mini Oxydators. I have been adding mineral powder, Bee Max, Genchem beta-G as required. And have just started small additions of Blackwater extract with water changes. I noticed a drop off in breeding a few months ago and realised I had stopped adding IAL. Once these went back in, the juvie survival rate improved, I am of the belief this is a great source of micro bacteria for the tank and an awesome food source for the littlest ones. It has been running with an Aquamedic Twin T5 light for the last five months. Lots of plant growth and biofilm on the back panel, usually see a gang of little shrimp grazing there in the mornings. Unfortunately, some of the plants are being infested with BBA, but I will trim in a couple of weeks to remove this. I have allowed the plants to grow like mad and the CRS seem to really enjoy their forest. I feed a mixture of Benibachi Kale, Beni Ambitious, Boss Snow, Boss Crack and occasionally some frozen Kale (prepared as in Bluebolts thread). For baby feeds I have followed Squiggs example and used powdered Spirulina, Barley Powder, powdered bee pollen, mixed with water and syringed to different corners of the tank. Now have also used Borneo Wild Bebi and the little ones loved that too!

Hi everyone, After several days of work I have completed my shrimp display setup. As promised I will do my write up on how I built this, steps taken to during construction as well as recommendations for suppliers of those 'hard to get bits'. But as I am excited and proud of my handiwork I will drop a few pics here and do my write up later on in this thread :)

Hi all, I am in need some advice, I've no experience with plumbing whatsoever (with the exception of using canister filters with chillers if that counts) so please bear with me if my questions seem silly or obvious! I came across 2 cheap 4 foot tanks with holes drilled already in the base of them that I am hoping to use. There are only a couple of minor scratches here and there and the only damage is on a back corner where the bezel is chipped - I intend to silicone this inside and out to be safe. Anyway I have a few points that I'd really love help to address. - How best to plumb these 2 sitting at the same height and integrate a sump. - Is it feasible to use 2 eheim canisters with a my chiller connected to a sump? When I only ran one canister the flowrate was not quite enough and the chiller was turning on and off too frequently as a result. Do I have to just bite the bullet and fork out money on a pump instead? - Opinions on how best to divide the setup into several bays for different colonies. Currently I am looking at following Paul Minett's lead using tropical flyscreen which has less than 0.4mm aperture but he has told me there is still the occasional fugitive baby. Thanks in advance, once I actually start doing anything on this setup I will post the progress in a journal here. Once again NB I am totally clueless so I'd appreciate it if you could dumb down your suggestions for me :-) Love and peace Will

Well done. What is more comforting is that the slight imperfections of our designs doesn't matter, and physics sorts it out.

Yeah I will be getting some ss guards shortly for it actually completely forgot until u mentioned this lol. And I agree, as long as it's ready before it starts to get to hot because atm they have been living in a 20l tank that's not chilled but doing fine breeding well too

I asked the guy about it (he's a physicist) he said that it's complicated because the system isn't static, and that the height of the drains does not really matte relative to the size/length. And that "to a first approximation" what you said about it is correct.

I think its every do able, you should be able to use at least one of the Eheims to run the chiller but it would be cheaper to run a pump i dare say. I have 2 pumps in my sump, one runs to the chiller and the big one that runs the to the tanks.both are in the last chamber and the return from the chiller is pointed at the pick up for the tank so the coolest water goes right to the tanks. There is 1 000 000 different ways to run a sump so depends what you wanna do. i changed min recently and still want to add some stuff but its basically k1 in to marine pure spheres and then i have heaps of void space to add to the total water volume. Im thinking about adding fine filter matt over the spheres to help filter out finer junk in the water The fly screen.... well paul's system seams to work so i would probably try to mimic his set up i forget what he has done with it, its been a while but i personally would run a sponge in each section as well as the sump. return water would be in end furthest away of course so the water passes through the screen. If you wanted you could possibly have a return in to each section to ensure they all get fresh water but that's extra pluming. If both weirs are all ready at the same height your just going to need to put some kind of barrier to stop shrimp falling down it. filter sponge or more fly screen should do the job.

    That's actually cool to know.

@jayc, I've just noticed something you might find interesting. I have opened up all valves to full and the levels in the tanks are balancing themselves. This makes sense as when one tank has more water in it than the one next to it ; it has more pressure so the other tank receives more water from the pump and vice versa. The tanks level themselves, and as such receive the same amount of water :) As per usual I make things overly complex and difficult for myself ^_^

Females will do this behavior when they are spreading their pheromones to attract a male. They may also do it again once their eggs start hatching.

Thanks for the reply guys. I had already read the article and was thinking i had a 50/50 chance of getting shrimpets but there was no chance of going the full brackish water transfer as i have no more tanks. My hope was for full fresh water breeding. If they can not breed in fresh water then the adults will be transferred back to the community tank to live out their lives in pet luxury. As a bit of an eco warrior i would never let my pets get into the wild. As nature has deemed me to old to see mini shrimp i just went to technology to help out. Grabbed the camera, full zoom, manual focus, 50 shots with incrimental changes in focus and this is the best one i got. Looks like a mini shrimp to me. I have put a bit of ground up bee pollen in there and think i might go a bit of mortar/pestal algae wafer also. Just a bit to add to the bio film. I will keep this post up to date in a week or two.

I'd love it if some of the native gurus collaborated to put together an Australian native interbreeding table (eg what breeds with what). I've seen at least one good example for the popular exotic shrimps. I know there would be a lot of question marks riddled throughout an oz native interbreeding guide but it would be cool to see and also watch it slowly be filled in as time goes by. Love n peace Will

Makes sense now seeing the back. Yeah, that's a good idea that. Are you running opposite day/night cycles between the tank and sump?
  19. Jarad
From what I have seen with my shrimp they could be cleaning themselves or they could be getting ready to molt, Now would be a perfect time to check your gH, kH and other parameters to make sure they're where they should be to help your little guys molt :) I also suggest that you consider adding some 'mineral balls' to ensure your shrimp have the required minerals to molt successfully. If you dont have any check out @newbreed's shop https://newbreedaquatics.com.au/. Cheers

I have always been inpired by other members crs colonies and i feel like my own colony has finally started to follow in the foot steps of members like @ineke @newbreed and @Jenbenwren. Over the last month i have had a few berried females hatch their eggs. Now i have roughly 30+ shrimplets between 2-4 weeks old. Some of the females have also reberried. So i wanted to share some pics to help inspire some others.

Here is my main PRL female. Old picture, she was looking see through for some reason. Now she looks great. When I cull the generation currently growing I will be focusing on white.

yeah well town water of tds 580 didnt help to begin with did it lol. I have had more downs then ups but it was the generosity of some on here that got me back in teh game when all my shrimp died 2 1/2 years ago :) its a shame its an 8 1/2 hr drive to your work now @Heavyd lol so no regular shrimp visits. I still got my tank from back then but sitting idly in the garage, once i move i will sell it

Thanks Jamie very much appreciated, It has been one of my shrimpy dreams to have a section full of CRS and I am extremely happy I am getting there. I still have a long way before I get close you yourself and Ineke. Thanks for the inspiration! Have a little race with @wot_fan about getting to 100 first so fingers crossed I maybe in the lead...

It's not the best and most economical way of feeding Asta. As you know it's expensive. Feeding it loose, directly into the tank will mean a lot is lost into the filter or between the cracks of the substrate. Go ahead, if you still want to do that. But minimise wastage by premixing in tank water and use a syringe/pipette to squirt it directly onto moss. That's why I created Shrimp Kandy Feast. I can feed fine powdered (expensive) ingredients with out fouling the water and minimises wastage.

Get off your *** and feed it to them already. Once you see how much they like it, you'll wonder why it took you so long.

How about something like: Commonly known as the Crystal Red Shrimp (CRS) or Crystal Black Shrimp (CBS), this freshwater dwarf species is popular amongst shrimp keepers around the world. They prefer cooler water temperatures (21-25 degrees Celsius) and a pH range of 6.0-7.0.
