I've been avidly watching these little guys since receiving them yesterday, and I thought I'd make a new thread for the observations! Fist up some pics! Next, some interactions with shrimp. First up, a pair getting intimate (or failing to - looks like the male was just seeing if she was in the mood) while ignoring some nearby shrimp. Next, a male getting territorial and chasing off a sunkist neo. Sorry about the lower quality - camera was set to low res accidentally. This movement is different from how they attack snails, so I think it's a territory issue rather than a hunting attempt. If you slow down the film you can see he raises his body and claws really high as though to look intimidating. But I'm not a crab expert so I dunno. Next a shaky-cam quick-and-dirty video evidencing snail-eating prowess. Don't watch if you get motion sick!! Next up, a rookie attempt at a close-up film. A bit shaky and focus is off, but you can see the female's cute face.

I usually drip acclimate for no less than 3 hrs, even if the water params are identical. Usually I'll push it as long as possible, like 7-8 hr. And yeah, your params look good. It was probably the acclimation that did your shrimp in.

The Eden 501 canister is actually just the sort of thing i have been looking for haha. Thanks guys, appreciate all the help. should like nice tucked away behind the tank with a set of lily pipes.

Mine stay on the bottom so for me at the moment not an issue. That said, I do always check the garage floor before driving in now lol

Got my red cherrys today a few decent reds most are young but really strong colour for there age so can't wait to see how they turn out, also got a solid fire red female just got to find a good male for her

I was concerned they might escape but my tops are definitely not completely sealed and they have not tried to escape so far. I would just be careful that they do not startle your shrimp and cause them to accidentally flip out of the water over the side. The shrimp take a little while to get used to the crabs. Mine ride them and chew on them now but they would freak out a bit the first couple of days when a crab came near.

Would you need a sealed top for these guys?

Modifying spraybar with additional holes pointing opposite (jayc has a diy thread on this) would do the trick. My personal lazy choice is to point the spray bar directly against the glass. 2fx and I had a discussion about this last year if i recall lol Sent from my SM-N920I using Tapatalk

Does anyone else have these in their substrate? They look harmless enough, and all raise their heads to feed, but the colour and small size compared to other nematodes unnerve me a little, I have to admit. I was unable to find more information on Google.

When i was in Walgett i had a hard first year i lost over 3 colonies of shrimp including snow whites before things took a turn for the best for me. Mind you RO water helped as opposed to the crap town water. Good to see thigns are coming good again though

I reset the three foot tank and set it aside for my TB line. (Another sad story, lol has not been my year) have also added some yellow cherries to this tank. I kept about ten of my original CRS line and have also had some of @ineke's added to the colony. So hopefully will have a revival over coming months, plus the bonus of nice red legs from many of Inekes line.

I personally think it's overkill for a 45cm but there's definitely options. I just close the double taps which limits the output or you can create a spraybar that disperses better. Eheim also had the AquaCompact 40 which would suit that size tank but I think it's no longer sold. You may be able to find it online somewhere for about $100. For that price though I'm pretty sure you could get the smallest Eden filter. I don't have experience with the Eden filters but plenty others on here do :D

+1 love the eheim 2213 / classic250. I bought plenty of them secondhand and barely had to replace a part :-) Sent from my SM-N920I using Tapatalk

Shep, I know your exact annoyance. I've got three tanks in my room and while I have no experience with the Fluval C2, I've found that my ISTA hang on is much noisier than the air driven. Both very different noise. Hang on is more of a hum whereas the air driven sponge is more of a popping noise. It's up to you what you'd prefer. I know I'd take a cannister any day due to noise and ability to add media etc. Hopefully someone with it can chime in but it may be worth looking at a cheap cannister. I use an Eheim 2213 on my 40L and it's awesome! Quiet and great filter. Maybe look at the Eden filters.

I personally dont have any specific methods other then putting the gravel vac into the soil and moving it tends to scare them away. I have lost plenty being sucked up though lol

Wow been a long time since i read this topic lol, gone from me discussing buying some select CRS to me having none what so ever :) Sorry to hear your colony collapsed mate are you trying to re establish it or moved on to something else? I still need to buy a Oxydator lol

This is why I love racks. Now instead of seeking permission for another tank, I say I need another rack. Saves ten arguments in one go!! Lol

Hey, Thought id join up to learn some more about this awesome hobby I've recently taken up. I have lots to learn and will aslo be after some certain species in the future. This is my planted tank. It has 6 ember tetra and red cherry shrimp. My second tank has just crystal red shrimp in it. This photo is from before i added them. I added them last night. introduced them using the drip method and they are so far very happy. I use no fert or c02 in this tank. Thanks for taking a look. Shep

Thieves are low human beings. No thief would dare aproach my tanks. Looking slightly less scary then usual in this pic due to me waking him up to take this photo hah. He was like "are you done yet ?"

Setup the tank last night running 2 dual sponges now 1 will go back in the kmart tank for my daughters tank. Gotta buy a gravel vacc this morning to get the silt out from the soil and i will test the perimeters tonight as the main dual sponge has been running 2 weeks now. Only got tap water in the tank atm but once the filter cycles will switch over to ro water. Just gotta buy some salty shrimp lol

This video shows their normal behaviour around shrimp. Just completely ignoring them. A male walks past a group of shrimp having dinner. The DAS in the video are adults. The Tangs just reached maturity a couple weeks ago so will probs get a bit bigger. About half a dozen times I've seen them walk right through groups of shrimp without trying to eat them. This is including a group of shrimplets. That vid of the territorial lunge was the only sign of aggression I've seen. In terms of food, so far I've seen them: --> Eating a ton of snails. --> Sifting through the substrate for morsels, with shrimp following and picking up the leftovers. --> Chewing mulberry leaves. --> Picking algae off moss. --> Eating Australian Blackworm Pellets - this is their favourite by far.

I have a very shaky video of a small male finishing its meal of a ~1cm pond snail. Don't watch if you're prone to motion sickness - it was taken with 100mm macro lens and nothing to rest it on haha

@IHaveCrabs, you should become a subscription member and sell them here too. I think it's going to be popular if shrimp safe. ??

I'm the guy who sells the Amarinus Laevis. I supply Exotic Aquatic in Carnegie and a few other places around melbourne. I'm a shrimpkeeper myself and these guys absolutely do not eat shrimplets. if they wanted to and they wanted to, and if they where somehow fast enough, they have no way to grab it.

Update! A fellow on facebook (if you're also on SKF and seeing this, that'd be cool!) is breeding and selling an almost identical species of crab, Amarinus Laevis. THey grow to approx 22mm, so they're just a tad bigger than amarinus lacustris. He's breeding them in fresh water successfully and selling them really cheap. If anyone was keen to get some I can put you in touch ? I have set of 8 females and 2 males arriving this week so pics coming soon. Apparently they're completely shrimp safe and survive/breed in water conditions suited to both neos/tigers and crystals/TBs. They do, however, snack on tiny snails but ignore adult ones. The guy keeping them says this allows him to have adult ramshorns in the tank to do clean-up duty without them breeding like mad and taking over the place. So, let's see how this goes!! Museum Victoria has some great photos! http://collections.museumvictoria.com.au/species/14241

Ziss EZ Breeding Box BL-2 http://shrimpkeepersforum.com/forum/index.php/topic/8879-new-arrivalsziss-ez-breeding-box/ Initial thoughts: well packaged and easy to put together except for the clip, I found it really hard to get it to attach to the breeding box, I do like that it’s an adjustable clip but so you can adjust it to suit your tanks water level. 1 week on. The inhabitants seem happy and healthy, I tried the suction cups and as I suspected they failed with in 24hours and released the shrimp I'd spent time selecting . Then I had to do battle with the clip so I could hang it from the side of the tank. The clip is definitely more secure, but it’s a pain in the bum to attach the clip to the box. There is a little adjustable bar at the bottom to level the box out depending on if your using the suction cups or the clip. It’s not very ridged making it too easy to move and even the slightest bump, like when taking the lid off, can push the bar in. To adjust the bar back out, the hole box needs to come out or you need to put your hand in the tank. Things I like: It has a lid It has an air stone on the back that pumps water in to the box to get water circulating, and a valve to control the airflow allows you to adjust the water turn over. The mesh sides seem to provide good flow to help keep the w.p consistent with the rest of the tank. expandable, with the addition of an expantion ring you can add another box on for more area. I’ve also got one of the meta cubs to test now too so I’ll do a comparison review soon

Thanks so much for spending the time to write this up BB. I have wondered about the ratios before and wasn't too sure about it. I'll definitely be referring back to this. Now to go and purchase a Calcium test kit......
