I've been avidly watching these little guys since receiving them yesterday, and I thought I'd make a new thread for the observations! Fist up some pics! Next, some interactions with shrimp. First up, a pair getting intimate (or failing to - looks like the male was just seeing if she was in the mood) while ignoring some nearby shrimp. Next, a male getting territorial and chasing off a sunkist neo. Sorry about the lower quality - camera was set to low res accidentally. This movement is different from how they attack snails, so I think it's a territory issue rather than a hunting attempt. If you slow down the film you can see he raises his body and claws really high as though to look intimidating. But I'm not a crab expert so I dunno. Next a shaky-cam quick-and-dirty video evidencing snail-eating prowess. Don't watch if you get motion sick!! Next up, a rookie attempt at a close-up film. A bit shaky and focus is off, but you can see the female's cute face.

I've been searching around LFS for some hardscape material. I found a few pieces I liked, but most turned out to be far too big and dominating for what I want to achieve in this scape. For example. So I settled for a few smaller pieces of goldvine. I'll probably still add extra to play with the look by these 2 joined together are my front runners at the moment. At home marking out tank dimensions on carpet. Added an old piece I've had for a while. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Last vid of the night. The females like to launch and try to swim, and this one makes a fairly pathetic attempt and lands in some shrimp.

This video shows their normal behaviour around shrimp. Just completely ignoring them. A male walks past a group of shrimp having dinner. The DAS in the video are adults. The Tangs just reached maturity a couple weeks ago so will probs get a bit bigger. About half a dozen times I've seen them walk right through groups of shrimp without trying to eat them. This is including a group of shrimplets. That vid of the territorial lunge was the only sign of aggression I've seen. In terms of food, so far I've seen them: --> Eating a ton of snails. --> Sifting through the substrate for morsels, with shrimp following and picking up the leftovers. --> Chewing mulberry leaves. --> Picking algae off moss. --> Eating Australian Blackworm Pellets - this is their favourite by far.

I just witnessed one wading through a crowd of shrimplets. It showed no interest in them at all.

This morning the shrimp have started following the crabs around. The crabs sift through the substrate to get tasty snacks and in the process leave a lot of snacks for the shrimp who can pick up the smaller pieces. It's so adorable!

A TDS meter is a must have for Shrimps. It comes in handy if you keep software fish as well. I use it to maintain parameters for both my shrimp tanks and my softwater fish tanks. If you already have pH, GH/KH test kits, then all you need is a TDS pen. Otherwise, those will be the first things I would suggest buying if you are starting out - TDS meter, pH, GH/KH. Of course, if you are cycling a new tank, then an Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate kit is essential. When you have more funds, you can get Calcium test kit, and anything else that takes your fancy.

I'd still stand that the associated use of "rilli", is the distinctive pattern of coloured head & tail with clear body. Theres been several claims, and confusion with shrimps over the past few years, and I must admit that I haven't read/research on cherries that much. There's also a taiwan breeder claim these these are super blue blue rillis. Although the blue is amazing, they're still culls from a rilli perspective. Then there's the blue jelly :cower: IMHO, I've noticed that a lot of commercial breeders are also "re-branding/naming" their shrimps for the sake of sales, and "creating, a"New" line, when in fact they're cull's or not quite there in terms of the selective breeding project, i.e. the above. Just my opinion, but personally, a rilli has a distinctive pattern.
