My understanding is that most internal filters have the pump at the top and the filter media at the bottom. It wont hurt if the pump is exposed during water changes, assuming you turn it off so it doesn't overheat.

Definitely better to keep the internal filter power head submerged. If you can't move the internal filter to a lower level then you are probably best doing the change how you are currently doing it. For my water changes I use a bucket of new water with an airline and tap. I just set it so it drops in slowly over time. I have the luxury of being able to leave it overnight.

My tanks are mostly 70 litre tanks and up until recently were only moderately stocked with perhaps 20 adults and some babies. I feed powdered food most days, pellets alternate days and leaves are always in there. I do a 10-15 % water change weekly and pure RO top ups if there has been much evaporation. I use 2 double sponge filters in each tank - I only have a canister in my 200 litre tank. I find my TDS raises by 5-10 points in a week so they are very stable. My 200 litre tank was high density population run with 4 sponge filters and a canister with the same routine as the smaller tanks. It has quite a big evaporation problem as it doesn't have lids. I find this tank can swing in TDS BY 50-100 points in a week but there was a very large population in that tank probably close to 600 maybe more so I fed a lot more .

I bred quite a variety of shrimp in Adelaide before I started using RO water . I wonder if the actual make up of the particles make a difference in the study Jayc is doing. Our water varies during the year depending on wen the water is being pumped from the River Murray. Even though the TDS is high its "clean" particles not toxic particles. At least it's high in calcium !

It was just a hunch and process of elimination. Ineke mentioned in another conversation that Adelaide water is very high in TDS. I was wondering if Albash lived in Adelaide and used tap water. Because using Adelaide tap water is a recipe for disaster. But it looks like Albash is in Melbourne and uses ro water, so that hunch is eliminated. @albashHow much water change are you performing each time? just to prevent anyone in adel being discouraged from keeping shrimp - people do keep bee shrimps in adelaide tap successfully just need to be diligent. and cherries certainly are no problem at all. anyway fellow adelaidians - don't let jayc get to you he's just a troublemaker ;-) love n peace will

Hello everyone!!! :) Firstly, I would like to thanks the forum owner invited me to join this wonderful forum and provided me a personal section for sharing my shrimp keeping knowledges. In addition, I am so glad to see quite a few of my Aussie mates active in this forum. :) Some of you may have know, I am the sole contributor for ShrimpyDaddy.com blog. The main objective of this blog is to share true information of this fairly new hobby to the world. When I first started shrimp keeping 5 years ago, there are so much information on the Internet that are mostly neither scientific nor true. During the first year of shrimp keeping, I suffered a lot by believing those information. Hence, about two years ago, I decided to start this blog to share my knowledges and the true information to the shrimp keeping community. In this way, shrimp keeper will not suffer what I experienced before and no one will cause death to the innocent shrimp again. After you have read my blog, if you have any questions or would like me to conduct any other test, please feel free to let me know. Cheers. ^^ Shrimpy Daddy

'Dead fish? I haven't seen any dead fish! Have you Phil? Eddie? Nah no dead fish around here mate.' Clearly more hair algae than one shrimp can deal with.?

School yard brawl standoff! Betta guarding the food from the shrimps. I can literally hear the shrimps go... "Give me food! Give me food!".
