Hi all, Just sharing a little "wisdom" I've acquired. I'm sure many if not most of the experienced keepers here will already be doing something simliar but hopefully some newer shrimpists can benefit :-) Since keeping more sensitive shrimp i thought i would follow others' advice and avoid putting my hands into the aquarium - i realised that i was doing this often by dipping my test tubes into the tank. So anyway it occurred to me to use a small syringe to withdraw the water.. usually the kit states 5ml is required but some may need other amounts anyway it's easy enough to figure out :-) Another tip I can give is that after knocking over many many test tubes and spilling delicious nutritious testkit agents across tables perhaps I could make holes in something to hold the test tubes in and avoid spilling them! I since discovered this is a common thing to do after seeing pictures of people who had drilled holes in wood etc. Anyway here is a little pic of how I do it and i'm sure there are better ways again but it's enuogh to give an idea :-) love n peace will

Thanks all for your input and advice, especially jayc you have been most helpful with this matter. Today I plonked a 9 litre bag of cal aqua labs black earth premium substrate (normal size) into one half/side of the aquarium (distracted the shrimp across to one side with treats first of course and shooed away one or two stubborn ones) The packet mentioned nothing about rinsing, in fact the instructions said little more than words to the effect of "put substrate in tank and add rocks and plants" In all honesty it did make the water cloudy but it was not significant and it cleared up within half an hour I'd say - the shrimp didn't seem bothered by it in any way. There was a negligible amount of miscellaneous organic material in the bag Needless to say I am very pleased with the minimal disruption to the tank and if all is well over coming days andweeks then I would highly ecommend the product to others.. My pH hadn't risen any higher 6.8 from several days ago, I'll watch how it progresses over the following days. I can't imagine there would be any dramatic change with just one bag but hopefully it will prevent any risk of further pH increases. If ammonia and nitrite are still at zero after a fortnight i will hopefully be able to afford to grab another bag to cover the other half of the tank, plus I will still need one more later to have the recommended amount for my tank size. I must share some happy news - while pouring in the substrate I disturbed a moult and i thought could there be love in the air? Lo and behold this evening I discovered I am nowthe proud keeper of a berried bee shrimp! I'm very pleased, it's only been 8 days since receiving them from heavyD and already there is joy. :-) love n peace will

Water the plants, wash the car, washing machine ... anything really expect straight down the sink. It just feels like a waste if you put the waste water down the sink. The only thing I would not do is drink it.

That's the same unit I have. Just remember NOT to use the Alkaline tap for aquarium use. Only use the Alkaline tap for drinking.

LOL. 5 minutes must have seemed like ages. Only BEP could do that, pour a whole bag into a tank with a mature filter, and still not show any ammonia. You couldn't do that with ADA amazonia. And pH is already dropping !! Woohoo. Aren't I always Keep flattering me with compliments. I love it.

cheers, it is good news, i realised recently that if i can keep these ones alive and hopefully breeding (if i have one of both sexes left) then it will mean i should be able to keep the other short creek variety alive and doing well - even if it does mean i ultimately end up culling these ones! love n peace will

thankyou both :-) i have rinsed out a collection of jars i had which are over 1 litre in size and will label them accordingly and place moss from each of my tanks in them and see how i go :-) love n peace will

Hahaha! I'm a little way off a rack. Maybe just one more tank..... thanks for the compliment, I have a long way to go with planted tanks, especially coming from large fish and cichlids. This hobby is infectious lol as many others here will tell you. I used to have the black bar endlers but crikey they looked nothing like these beauties you need to get yourself a female or 2

It's stored indoors under t8 bulbs. Just a regular clear plastic bin. Some old shrimp substrate and I top it off each week with my shrimp waste water. Also have a small powerhead for water movement This one is next , pretty thick layer on it:)

Hi I am new to this new hobby, had a one and half feet tank with about 30 shrimps but the shrimps keep dying day by day. Although they managed to reproduce quite a lot , the old ones keep dying. What may be the cause? Tank seems to be stable as it is 3 Months old.
