That article refers to something I wrote here recently about the equation running backwards to produce ammonia from nitrate. While it points to the process occurring in low oxygen conditions I recall it can also happens in low pH conditions although I could easily be wrong. There is a big difference between turning off the flow to aerobic bacteria sitting in a relatively open housing exposed to atmospheric air (eg HOB) or oxygenated aquarium water (UG, Sponge, Corner box etc) vs. sealed in an external canister filter. You have much less time in the canister filter, perhaps 3-4 hours until you start seeing a measurable reduction in nitrifying capacity. Worth knowing that the nitrobacter group (converting nitrite to nitrate) are most susceptible to crashing, therefore nitrite spikes being more common in established tanks kept at suitable pH than ammonia spikes.

this article seems to confirm that nitrobacter can live a few hours without oxygen and will likely all die after 24hours. http://www.fishtanksandponds.co.uk/aquarium-science/nitrifying-bacteria.html ps it does make a rather obvious point I personally never considered; how odd that u can buy cycle quickstart products in sealed bottles when autotrophic nitrifying bacteria couldn't survive. ya gotta love those greedy deceptive businesses! good luck with the planaria :-)

Anyone else here keeping Super Hornets (paracaridina) and having breeding success? I've had 3 different females become berried and all three have dropped their eggs. I hope it's just because it's their first time. But I'm not sure. I house mine in a 10g tank. My Parameters are PH 6.4 TDS 150 GH 6 KH 0 No3 Temp 72 Thanks!

It's time for our first meeting since the first ever Australian shrimp championship! We look forward to seeing some new faces alongside the regulars :) Doors open from 12ish. Address 29 grant street, Clifton hill. We have organized 2 talks for this upcoming meet: ~The first is David Mai (Mr MSS himself). David had the pleasure of visiting Japan earlier this year and will be providing us with some photos and insight from his trip. It's a great way to see some sexy shrimp, learn some of the differences between the hobby here versus overseas but David can also provide comparisons between Japan and Vietnam as well (which he visited last year). ~Next up Paul O'Leary and Jamie "Newbreed" 2 of the only 5 people in Australia with the bragging right of being an Australian shrimp championship judge will be going through the procedure and standards for picking the best looking shrimp in town. If you wondered how the shrimp were judged, how to pick the best show group for the next show or some pointers or direction for your own breeding goals then this will answer all your questions. Following these talks we will once again have a round table discussion on shrimp keeping; this is a much more social, open discussion where everyone can chime up. This is a great way to share your triumphs, knowledge or difficulties in the shrimp room, to gain advice, share a useful piece of wisdom or ask questions that can be difficult to find answers for or which you may not want to ask online. We will also have a Trade table, Raffle and supper on the day. Beverages are supplied but please bring a plate of food to share :) IMPORTANT NOTICE ON TRADE TABLE: Please note as always there is a 10% commission on all items sold on the trade table. As this is our 4th meeting (5th event as the club) we will also be enforcing that: -unless it is your first time selling on the trade table -or attending a meeting ONLY financial members will be allowed to sell on the trade table. (membership is $20-40 per year and membership forms are available at each of our meeting).

Might struggle with the 9W light but worth a go. When I planted the HC i had filed the tank with some water up to the top of the substrate which made it super easy to plant.

Here's my best photos from my three foot Chameleon and CRS community tank. There's mini pellia and Pearl Moss in the pics, and I took the photos with my four year old HTC Incredible S. Hope you like them. Thanks Rob.

OK, so mind is made up, I am going to do a Hemianthus Callitrichoides carpet in the tank, I will place 1 piece of stone/rock in there also and have a couple of pieces of Anubias Nana tied to a stone/rock placed in also. I've ordered the HC, Anubias Nana, 1 Rock and a bag of Eco Complete. Been watching the preparing part of the HC online, should I plant it with water in the tank or without? Just have moist substrate?

Yeah the red under the leaf gives a very nice contrast. Send me a PM, I've just done a trim however it grows fast and could hook up you ;)

GotCrabs above design looks good however you're probably losing alot of real estate with the plants "descending" if that makes sense. The Val may get blown all over the tank with the filter behind it? Not sure, never had it before. I'm extremely happy with my Cal Aqua BEP Powder. Doesn't cloud the water when disturbed and so easy to plant. I'm a big fan of DAS atm, great character even though they don't have much colour but Chameleon's would also be nice. Maybe a stem plant to cover the filter. CO2 isn't a deal breaker..I'm growing HC Cuba without CO2 no problems..

Beautiful shrimp! Just a day or 2 ago we speculated on this forum how lovely a metallic gold or silver shrimp would be and these could have the genes needed to develop such a strain. I wish these and several other lovely species could be found here in Australia. I don't know if Paracaridia is still considered valid. Either way, if these shrimp are the same as the variable Paracaridina meridionalis, the water parameters measured at the collection site were a very low EC of 7uS and pH around 5.4. However, despite the variability reported for P. meridionalis, these don't look the same to me.

Hi guys, my name is Emre from Istanbul, Turkey. I just wanted to share my tank with you which has been on since Oct/2014. I have got limited numbers of Taiwan Shrimps but got so many babies. Size: 70x35x32h (84 liters) Filter System: - HMF Filter - Sunsun Hw 603 B Mini Cannister Filter - Undergravel Filter (PoweredWith Air Pump) Lighting: Daylight, blue and white LED Water chemistry: RO water + GH+ Mineral Substrate: ADA Amazonia Normal type (1 package aka 9 liters) Others: Mangrove, Mini Java Fern, Indian almond and some other seasonal leaves, Borneo Wild Bee Ball 1st days setup: 05/10/2014 pH 5.3 TDS: 220 microsiemens GH: 6-7 kH: 1 Temp: 24 C - Since I had used HMF Filter (because it makes maximum bio area) I had to use high density sponge to make sure shrimplets will not pass through the sponge. Here below you can see the sponge I used: - For the substrate: Bottom 0: I had used Borneo Wild Minerax and Enlive at the bottom Bottom 1:Undergravel filter Bottom 2: A thin mosquito net to make sure shrimplets will not go to the bottom Bottom 3: Sera Siporax Bio Ring Bottom 4: ADA Amazonia Normal Set Up Day Pictures Present Pictures A short video:
