Hello all! I found some awesome looking shrimp in my tank with Carbons and Blue Dreams when I found this pearler. I was thinking or putting her with this male: Any ideas as to what they are Looking forward to trying to breed them further.

I am amazed at how quickly prices have dropped here in Australia. But that's the way it needs to go if we wish to make the hobby more accessible for more people. The hard work, general atmosphere and knowledge sharing of this forum and it's brilliant members are the only reason I have been able to keep motivated, and my shrimp sustained, within the hobby. I look forward to he day we can have Sulawesi for under $10. Lol!! Never hurts to dream!! Ps. The list of brilliant inspirational Aussie keepers is a long one, but thanks to you all!! :)

The one thing you have to remember about shrimp in Australia is that they are totally illegal to import & all the shrimp that are here have been imported illegally, hence the high prices. As has already been mentioned, prices have come down incredibly in the last few years. I can still remember when a pair of red cherries were $500, that right, I said a pair of red cherries were $500. It wasn't long ago that pandas were $2k each. All of this is because every single cherry, TB, Crystal, tiger etc has been illegally imported & I have to say that Dean, the former owner of my website, Boss Aquaria, & this forum has had a great deal to do with the fall of the prices & I for one thank him for his efforts in the past.

So after 18mths & a number of different graphic designers, I have finally got the cherry shrimp family tree ready for peer review. I know there is a few additions to be added, like blue gene orange rili & green orange rili, any other suggestions will be gladly added.

OK recieved a reply from Dr Frank Koehler from the Australian Museum. Quote: "None of the native Australian freshwater snails is carnivorous in the sense that it preys on other fw snails."

Thanks Disciple. As far as a TB tank goes ... I started cycling a 45cm cube a few days ago . I am using only SD products and following the all the procedures on his site. Hopefully it will be ready for shrimp in 5-6 weeks. I am very happy with SD products. My shrimp look great and they are breeding. I don't know what else I could ask for :). Good luck with your shrimplets. Maybe there are more hidden in the tank than you think.

Congrats Wot_fan really happy for you man. You are really doing well. So I am thinking it wont be long until you get some tb's right? lol Yea she did hatch just over a weeks ago. She hatched about 10 shrimplets but currently I think about 4 or 5 are still around. Unfortunately until my new tank is cycled I feel like my shrimplet survival rates will stay low. Saying that I have improved the survival rate from 0% to about 30% - 40% (if survival rate is converting eggs to juvies). I still want to improve things though. How are you finding using the whole range of SD products?

With regards to native Australian snails that prey on other snails, these are common in marine systems but I'm unaware of any existing in freshwater. I've sent emails to a couple of researchers currently working in this area. Will report back when I get some replies.

Every time this thread bounces to the top I remember the day I just gave a few unmeasured sprays of peroxide to the surface of a small 20l tank to remove the surface film. A little spray here, a little spray there, here a squirt, there a squirt, just a little spray can't hurt.... And 30 mins later..... well... see the topic of this thread.

Agree 100% with Squiggle. Also need to thank many of the members of this forum for breeding shrimp and passing them on to other keepers at reduced prices or, more often, free. Bluebolts and Squiggle are two that jump to mind, but there are lots of others.

Salifert is Da Bomb!! It can go as low as 0.2ppm, perfect for shrimp tanks & they are available from AoA. One of the cool things is they are dual range from one test. i.e. View from the top for high range & view from the side for low range. Here is a thread on the use & reading I did a while ago before AoA was a sponsor, hence me referring to Ben & the shop as just a LFS. http://shrimpkeepersforum.com/forum/index.php/topic/5617-the-nitrate-test-kit-from-heaven/?hl=salifert

So I have been going through my hydrogen peroxide at a decent rate. I have been buying 100ml bottle from the chemist for about $8. So I decided to mix my own 6% hydrogen peroxide to use in my oxydators. I purchased the following One bottle of 50% hydrogen peroxide ~ $27 A bottle to put your mix in ~ got it free Bottle of distiller water ~ $2 Measuring cup ~ $8 So for around $50 you could make about 5 litres of 6% hydrogen peroxide for your own use. I mixed up about a litre for my own use and still have heaps left over. I worked out to get 6% I needed to mix 120 mls of hydrogen preoxide with 880 ml of the distiller water. If I were to buy a litre of 6% from a my local chemist it would cost me around $80. So there is a nice savings if you mix it yourself. I am also sure you could get a 6% mix for less then $8 per 100 ml but I was using the cost from my local chemist. I am also sure if you shopped around you could get the things I listed for even cheaper then I did.

I have 16 x CREE XML, 8 x CREE XPe (enforce red spectrum) and 8 x Philip Radeon (enforce blue spectrum) over 60cm cube tank. All LEDs are running at 15 to 40 duty cycle during the testing for different scenario. In conclusion, I find that the cool white light at 28 to 30% give best reflection of colour and the red and blue supporting lightings are suffice at 20 to 28%. Kelvin does not tell the true spectrum. As long as you are getting a light designed for plant, it should be good. Buce prefers more red light than blue light to grow. But the blue light is preferred by shrimp and to reflect the colour of some Buce. As such, it is better to have lighting that has control over individual channel. Given said that, since Buce loves medium low lighting, lighting is not everything. So on what evidence I claimed this? I tested with 30% cool white and 8% red and blue supporting. The result is that they still grow as per normal. I have been in planted tank hobby for 20 years. Personally I find that lighting requirement is always glorified. What I find with most plants Is that they will do just fine with sufficient lighting (not too much). The more important factors are the CO2 and nutrients. If you look at the biological aspect, light is just an activator for chlorophyll. If you ramp up the activity of chlorophyll and not supplying enough nutrients, the plant will either shutdown the growth function or they will die. One good analogy is that you have a 800bhp V10 engine but you only have 1 liter fuel tank. Once your engine run at 200mph for 20 sec and it will drop dead. ;)
