Hi shrimplovers! The other topic with all the pictures was getting kind of long so I post it in a new topic if you don't mind. I did my best to catch the best shrimp of this contest on video again. Enjoy, hope you like it. Feel free to share this video and spread the shrimp faith! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLl5x1kAMfo

Don't worry Disciple & Inverted, there's Vic members who will be there to represent. I don't think I'm ready to compete this year either, but great to see you will Jamie. Let's get to work trying to encourage some more competitors!

I don't particularly care if there are snails in my tanks or not. I find they fill an important function in a balanced aquarium. Having said that some snails I like some not so much. I have eliminated pond snails from a number of my tanks buy just simply removing the ones on the glass everytime I walked past the tank. Over time successfully eliminated the pond snails. I have over 100 tanks and if I manage to do this anybody out there should be able to do it. Takes time but if anything shrimp people stare at their tanks more often than not! Don't just stare remove a few snails while you're at it!!! I do add red ramshorns and Malaysian trumpets on purpose to some of my tanks.

I am still undecided about which of my shrimp will be entered, but I will have to be in it!! As James has said, entries can be mailed down, with the option of auctioning them off at the end of day. This saves on return posting them. The main judging criteria for this first round is consistency of colours, even colouring, etc. We are trying to follow as closely to international standard rules. The more entrants the better. We are open to all species. If you have natives, cherries, crystals or TB you wish to present, please let shrimp club victoria know. I will be there in my SKF top, thankfully not speaking this time, I believe I am judging and just trying to be helpful. I will attempt to gather images and have posted within the week following the event. (I know I have not been good at this!! Sorry) If you can be in Melbourne on the weekend, please come along, meet fellow breeders. I would be wrapt if an SKF member takes out first prize.

Yes that does suck Mech. Hope you get it rocking again. For me, cherries don't tend to do well in soft water but it sounds like they did fine for you until you added the blues. Be sure to make changes to your water conditions slowly - no shrimp will appreciate rapid changes, and stability is more important than reaching an exact level. BTW, if your KH test shows yellow on the first drop the reading could actually be 0. Where I am the tapwater is very soft and 0 KH is not at all unusual. If the problem is related to the blue shrimp and a bacterial strain introduced with them, perhaps feeding probiotics and immunostimulants could help. At least one person on this forum feeds oats to provide beta glucan - it could well be JayC. Perhaps using other additives (eg Mosura BT-9, Tonic Pro) as immunostimulants could help too.

Mr Crabs, this is the colours you need, my Kh is 4 drops and my Gh is 9 drops and my TDS is 170 the kh isnt from my tank as mine is 0, goes orange right away but does anyone know why my GH is abit high? the water i put in is Rain water and its a Gh of 2 drops, only product im adding is Jayc DIY Remineralisation, i know this lowers the Ph, im going to have to test it to see if it highers the GH too, asume it does since it raised the TDS, maybe ill try aim for 135 TDS now? I have to put my 2 cents in again, you can not use colour to ID native shrimp, they do have a standardish colour pattern but it will change with stress and water conditions and where they come from. For ID it is rostrum/ nose, body, tail and head shape, roughly for ID. When native shrimp are described they are preserved and depending on what they are preserved in they are all red or white, so colour dose not get a look in and is not used, as I have banged on about we use colour to grade and group our shrimp from OS, but with natives it is totally different, this is NOT a shot at you it is for every one to read, I am sending a email shortly to try and get line drawings to use as ID points and I might do black and white photos to put with it to help the point. Where did they come from? they could be 2 types C. longirostrus and C. indistincta, if it is them the nose will tell you. Bob

Where were you, that always helps with ID, There is only a few species down that way, I am from Dayboro before moving up here. If they cant be ID the guy that is doing all the ID work Taxo work not genetic work in Australia, is in Brisbane, in south Brisvagas. With that rostrum it will be one of the Brisbane endemic species. You can not ID natives by colour, I always through that one in as every one wants to use colour to ID natives and I don't work. Not pointing fingers just trying to get the message out there to every one. Kids always have the best fun collecting and it hooks them for life most of the time. Bob

I'd be interested to know how does it work? Does the entrant supply everything? Edit: after reading I see you supply tanks and that entries can be mailed. If these things are going to be big in Australia I think people would have to travel interstate to show their shrimp. Love to see someone from SKF enter. Or even just a member there to take pictures for the rest of us !

You could run a sponge filter. Most people with shrimp use these as they can't suck in the babies and the they eat the biofilm on them. I would never recommend turning off a filter as the bacteria in it will start to die. If it's been off for a while and you turn it back on it can release ammonia and nitrate in the tank. Cheers mick
