So after 18mths & a number of different graphic designers, I have finally got the cherry shrimp family tree ready for peer review. I know there is a few additions to be added, like blue gene orange rili & green orange rili, any other suggestions will be gladly added.

You will find that everyone has their own way of doing things. I only explained how I set up my filters which happen to be almost the same way Jayc does his but it not the only way you must do it As Kizshrimp points out the waste from a shrimp tank is quite low compared to a fish tank. Also I am sure thousand of ppl set up their filters as per the picture on the box so I don't think you can go wrong following that method. I am sure as you try different things you will figure out what works for you.

No one has said it yet, so I'll do it .... STICKY!! Even if it's still work in progress.

You could run a sponge filter. Most people with shrimp use these as they can't suck in the babies and the they eat the biofilm on them. I would never recommend turning off a filter as the bacteria in it will start to die. If it's been off for a while and you turn it back on it can release ammonia and nitrate in the tank. Cheers mick

Hi About to set up my first shrimp tank. I will be using black earth premium normal as the substrate My question relates to the water. I do not have a water tank or R/O system and from what I understand if I add tap water the substrates life span is significantly reduced. If so can I condition the water in buckets ? If there is such a product what is it? My tank is small being approximately 50 litres (60cm) Thanks Andy

Spot on Disciple. There's so many choices of media to use and different ways to stack it - and they'd all work. We aim for long service intervals and to that end we want coarse mechanical first in line. We also aim for optimum conditions for nitrification and that means keeping the bio media clean, somewhere near the end of the line. The most important thing is that it all keeps flowing well to supply oxygen to that biomedia. Neo, stack it how it works out best for you - you can change it later if you're not happy. I have presumed you've got only the supplied media and some marinepure handy but perhaps you have more. I don't disagree with JayC or Disciple's advice, I just don't consider it to be making the most of what you have. While I don't use it I fully accept that marinepure is awesome media, but substrat pro is being underrated here. It's awesome stuff too. So is siporax, biomax, matrix and a bunch of other excellent media with other brand names.

Don't worry about posting pics of the same shrimp over and over again wot_fan... they're great pics! Great work Shrimpy Daddy for inspiring people on this forum and giving some great advice. You must be happy to watch it pay off!

Not to mention hydrogen sulphide Mick, yuck. Zolanski, the dirtier the filter the quicker it goes bad, but you only have a few hours at best. If it's been off longer best to remove it from the tank and clean the media in aquarium water before you turn it back on.

+1 re drink but beer for me! :-) ph 7.5 shouldnt bother goldfish but if they had to deal with a sudden shift in pH then that will hurt for sure I reckon! agree re adelaide water it's so poor I feel ashamed to take a dump in it :-p

Thanks. As far as I can tell the shrimp are doing well. They aren't hiding and are active. I haven't seen any evidence of a molt since I added them to the tank though. I have read that shrimp usually molt after being moved to water with different WP. I am not sure what I should expect in terms of molting. The tank in general is doing good too. The brown and white fungus are slowly going away and most of the moss is growing. Even subwassertang seems to be coming back. The major exception is the wisteria. It has been slowly melting away since I added it. I don't want to add any ferts so I am just leaving it alone and hoping it will make a come back. I'll post pictures of the overall tank in the next couple of days. The lights are off on the tank now and it is time for me to get some sleep.

Hello Neo, The way I have organised my filter media is by having a course sponge at the bottom, then a medium follow by a fine sponge. The rest of the space I used the marine pure media and lastly I had some wool and carbon. I would give the media a quick clean in some old tank water or ro water.

Sometimes people put prime or similar in the bag to neutralise any ammonia that's produced too. A few years ago a mate put some activated carbon loose in the bags with shrimp he sent and that was good too. Breeder boxes to keep the sale shrimp away from food is a good idea.
