Useing minerals?

Hey guys ive not had my tank very long. Only a 40ltr tank. When i set up my lfs gave me ro water to use etc and did not say anything about useing or putting minerals in. As ive been looking more into things its sounds like when you use ro water u need to use minerals. Is this correct? Ive come across Beta-G and black powder? Are these any good? And of use? As i live in the uk my lfs do not store these bt i could order online if i do require them? Any advice would be amazing. Ps sorry for my awful spelling! :)

yes you need to add mineral's to ro and/or rainwater, an absolute must for the health and moulting of your shrimp, google... benabachi products for shrimp.

Phil there are heaps of online shops that keep shrimp products in the UK -I used to order most of my things from the UK. Most of us use the Benibachi GH+ for Crystals, TB's etc and there is a Benibachi GH/KH for cherry varieties. As you only have one tank you need to keep it at the right conditions for Crystals -if that is what you are going to have- as the Crystals require more specific water conditions. The Cherry varieties can adjust quite happily to the Crystal water requirements.

Once you get your minerals - and might I suggest a TDS or EC pen to make sure you mix it to the right levels- it would be better to catch out your shrimp , adjust the water in the tank to the right parameters and then reacclimatise your shrimp to the new water conditions. The shrimp are better off with one adjustment rather than adding lots of small amounts of mineral powder- they like stability in their water so this is the safest way to do it.

There are lots of articles on water parameters here on the forum so you can read up about what each type of shrimp variety requires- or just ask once you know what type of shrimp you want to focus on. Due to space restrictions it is quite a normal practice to have Cherry and Crystal varieties in together- just don't mix the cherry varieties because they interbreed so just one colour cherry per tank.

Everything Ineke said is correct, except it Salty Shrimp minerals, not Benibachi! I'm sure it was just a seniors moment, lol.

I'm sceptical of that product "Pure".

There is absolutely nothing that shows you need to use that product to achieve clean clear water.

Save your money.

I've got crystal clear water, and I don't use products like that.

One interesting thing he mentioned was "Bacteria pressure", which I guess just means number of bacteria around.  Yet I see all these other videos from shrimpkeepers bragging about how much bacteria their filtering system holds. Also interesting is no mention of using anti-biotics to treat bacterial infection.  I think that has fallen out of favor recently.

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.
