It looks like Utricularia gibba. You should remove all traces of it before it takes over your tank/mosses.

Not a nice plant to have around shrimplets! Remove what you can and keep an eye out for small pieces in the future, it has a habit of leaving small pieces behind.

I threw out a giant softball sized clump of java moss today as i couldn't be bothered sorting through that but i combed over my mini pellia, fissdens and peacock covered rocks and think i might have got most (hopefully all but i doubt it  :roadrage:  )

Me too, was it from Aquagreen? What does it do apart from be a pain the the backside to get rid of?

What does it do apart from be a pain the the backside to get rid of?

Just google it for more detail.

But I'll summarise it in one sentence why we hate this weed...

"It satisfies its nutrient requirements by capturing and digesting small aquatic prey – usually small invertebrates – in its bladder structures"

Ohhnoo UG arrggghhhh. I found it in my community tank a few weeks ago it's such a pain. I didn't know I had it till I saw an fb post about it and had unknowingly infected all the plants I had set aside for my shrimp tank. Luckily I found out before I planted the shrimp tank and spent days making sure I got every tiny bit. I've just finished removing most of it from the rest of the plants & moss I had in the com tank, (I took them all out), but I still need to go through them again to make sure I got it all before I put them back into the tank.

Silly thing was, the day before I knew I had it, I saw a fb post from a guy nearby that had a bucket full of it from his tank. I keep hundreds of cp's that need to be kept in big water trays and they get heaps of bugs and mozzie wrigglers in them, plus I love carnivorous plants but have no aquatic ones. So I asked if I could have it to put in the water trays to see if it would help keep mozzie numbers down, with out knowing I already had it lol. I did score about 25 crypts & too many small java ferns to count from his bucket full and the trays with the ug have a lot less bugs in them.

One interesting thing he mentioned was "Bacteria pressure", which I guess just means number of bacteria around.  Yet I see all these other videos from shrimpkeepers bragging about how much bacteria their filtering system holds. Also interesting is no mention of using anti-biotics to treat bacterial infection.  I think that has fallen out of favor recently.

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.
