There is a fair bit of stuff I want to bring to the forum and unfortunately, you can't install on the old version and simply port to the new. None of the old modification code is transferable. What is the modification code? Well, it's stuff like those trophies, post likes, user tagging, newest posts etc.... Each mod we have here is around $150 - $200 to buy (license + brand removal fee). It wouldn't be prudent to keep throwing money at an older version of the software when we would need to pay again for the eventual upgrade. Rather, whilst we have minimal number of mods, a more economical approach is to do the upgrade and then invest in the mods as this version will be around for a while.

Which leads me into the new look and feel. Not sure where the facebook similarities are coming from as my facebook looks nothing like the forum? The old interface and the new are chalk and cheese, not to mention the ton of enhancements under the hood of the new version. The newer version is a lot "cleaner" in design and consistent with the new offerings of all the major players in forum software - it's not limited to just who makes our forum software.

The reality is that people don't like change, I've seen it with every version of Windows since Windows 3.0. Embrace change, it can offer more opportunities. This forum is world class (we are only a few thousand posts behind shrimpnow) and deserves to be running with the best engine under the hood. I have no doubt that there will be some teething issues, but we'll get through them.

So SKF would be one of the first forums running with this version too! I think I am getting the hang of the new look forum now after playing for a couple of hours! Few bugs to fix but it will be great once we are all familiar again.

Talk about changing Windows, what about the crazy changes to Office programs, arrrgh!! :)

Oh yeah, have I done something wrong. My title used to read Moderator, now I am just **********. Thought you may have been swearing at me from a distance!! :)

In the hobby' date=' yup definitely one of, if not, the first to move to VB5.x. I suspect everyone was holding back to see who would jump first and see the fall out. A lot of people in the hobby don't like change. :help:

No, not sure what's up with that?? But don't take this the wrong way, it's the least of my worries. LOL

Haha, Kristy! I agree with you (although I think it looks more like a mole and the one in the middle looks like a dog)

But seriously. I really don't understand why the logo had to be changed. I always was very impressed with the design of the old one, it looked really professional.

The new logo make the forum look like a site for kids.

Not a fan at all! Please give us the old logo back! Please, please, please, pleeeeeeeeze!

I too saw the brown riffle shrimp and thought it looked like a cockroach, the old logo looked very professional. This new logo reminds me of Dot of Dot and Keeto the mosquito cartoon.

And my status or ranking is now a shrimp noob?

I know we need change and it usually ends up being a good thing, but this new format is confusing and with the issues that need tweaking frustrating.

I am sure that everything is being done as quickly as possible to get everything back on track.

It's amazing that none of these issues presented when we spent time, over the last couple of weeks, trialling the new version. It seems to be settling down now and Nogi has managed to get us over some of the bigger hurdles. It wont be long before it's all running smooth. From the amount of posts and updates, we all seem to be navigating around quite well.

Nice one Nogi! They say you can't please all of the people all of the time, but you're achieving very close to that! Great idea! Can I add a suggestion to everyone, prior to next forum change, if buying and selling, make sure in your communications with each other, maybe buyers should ensure they provide sellers with contact phone number when providing your address details. I am sure all will work well, from what I have seen, but best to have a backup solution just in case!

The difference in the next update will be that a brand new database is being created so this one will remain unchanged. Worse case, we still can get read-only access to the old (this) forum.

Can't help you with Gentian Violet, sorry. It is banned in Australia violet for potential toxicity, and even possible cancer risks. I thought it was banned in Canada as well. At least, you now know why there isn't much info on gentian violet medication and it's use. But keep an eye on the snails after a week. If it affects the snails, it might not kill them immediately. So keep checking for up to a week. Much safer options out there. No point risking your own life over unsafe products.

Hello! I have a tank that currently does not contain shrimp, but does contain neon tetras which I am currently treating for Ich, as well as some bladder snails. Shrimp will be a later addition, likely cherry shrimp but I'm still doing research just to be sure. Initially I'd intended to buy some sort of Ich-fighting product that contains malachite green after doing a decent bit of research on it, most of which indicated that it should be shrimp-safe so I'd be good if I ever needed to use it again once shrimp were actually introduced (though I should note I'm aware shrimp can't get Ich, I'm more wondering in case the tetras could get Ich again, or something else that responds to similar medication). I ended up not being able to find any MG-containing products without either having to travel quite far or wait multiple days for delivery (which I was worried could lead the Ich to be fatal), and ended up picking up 'Top Fin Ick Remedy', a product that contains gentian violet which is a triarylmethane dye like malachite green. The bottle has two slightly differently worded warnings about its use with invertebrates ("not recommended for" and "not safe for" respectively), but when I'd been researching malachite green, I'd also heard of products that contain MG but not any other ingredients that would be harmful to inverts still being branded with warnings that they could be harmful, just as a "just-in-case" since the manufacturer didn't test it on any inverts, and I'm wondering if maybe it could be a similar situation here. I'm having a very very hard time finding information about gentian violet's use in fishkeeping at all though, it seems currently extremely uncommon. What I will say though is that I'm on day 2 of treating my tetras with it, and the bladder snails seem just fine -- in fact today I noticed what looked to be a bladder snail that appeared to be newly hatched (because of its size) that I hadn't seen before that was zipping around the tank without issue. But obviously, shrimp are not snails, and bladder snails are also notoriously hardy little guys, so what I'm seeing right now could easily be totally inapplicable to cherry shrimp. It might even be inapplicable to other species of snails, for all I know. Has anyone else here ever used anything that contains gentian violet in a tank that actually does contain shrimp? Were they okay, or should I make sure to not use it once shrimp are added?

One interesting thing he mentioned was "Bacteria pressure", which I guess just means number of bacteria around.  Yet I see all these other videos from shrimpkeepers bragging about how much bacteria their filtering system holds. Also interesting is no mention of using anti-biotics to treat bacterial infection.  I think that has fallen out of favor recently.
