Question about blue shrimp

Hi

I was wondering if someone could assist me with some information on the blue velvet and blue rilli shrimp. Not sure which one to get. What is the price difference between them, are they easy to obtain and what are their water parameters? Thanks so much for your help guys.

They are the same shrimp basically just different colour. The Red Rilli blue gene has a red head and tail and the clear section in the middle is a blue- the blue velvet comes from the Red Rilli blue gene shrimp but when these are selectively bred for several generations the blue will intensify. I started out with the Red Rilli blue gene - as opposed to Red Rilli which has the Red head and tail and clear middle- and got quite a few light blue Blue Velvets from which I then selected the Blueist shrimp and bred them together . There are a few people advertising them so looking in the classifieds will let you know who to message or put your own ad in and state what you want then anyone with some for sale will contact you. There is a price list in the for sale section to help you so you don't get over charged. WP is the same as Cherry varieties and they are very easy to keep but you need to keep culling any with stripes in the clear section or with poor colour.

As ineke mentioned, there's two forms of red rilli (see pics below). The red rilli blue body via selective breeding can produce the blue velvets, which through selective breeding, will breed 100% true. Hobbyist commonly refer to the carbon rilli's as blue rilli, which technically isn't correct..... All these are available on this forum, but with varying quality and $....

Keep in mind if u want blue shrimp there is a big difference between a blue velvet f1 from blue gene red rili and a blue velvet selectively breed. Mine have been breed by me for f6 and I'm starting to get really strong blue and I bought mine as blue velvets. So assuming. U are aiming for strong blue colour I'd buy blue velvets as it will save u maybe 2years or so to be happy with the colour and breeding. Mine still drop the occasional red rili

Thanks so much for all your posts and info guys, that's a big help. If I purchase for example cherry shrimp from a breeder who has a lower PH (e.g. 6.5) than my tank, and slowly acclimatise them over a few hours, will they be ok if my PH is quite higher (e.g. 7.2) or can they get shocked by the PH change even if it's slow? One last question, what does the f1 or f6 mean when it comes to shrimp? Thanks.

the 'f6' implies 6 generations of selective breeding (approx 2 yrs worth). F1 meaning 1st generation of selection. acclimatising these cherries from 6.5 to 7.2 shouldn't be an issue if done over a few hrs (4+). a drip every 2 seconds or so should do the trick :encouragement:

That's the number of generations of breeding in if 2 parents are red rili blue gene and have blue velvet babies the babies are f1 if you breed those f1 the babies will be f2 aNd so on. The pH thing is not an issue at all. Use a drip transfer where water. From the tank mixes with the water the shrimp are in. I use one of the external hang on breeder box for mine

Do people ever breed the blue velvet with the blue carbon (blue rilli)? Just wondering?

Any cross breeding I'd suggest doing in a separate tank as there is always the risk that the results can set your program backwards.

Yes' date=' but generate a number of culls.....didn't have enough tanks and abandoned the selective breeding program..... Worthy of a selective breeding program though....

STOP IT BLUEBOLTS! You're not meant to be teasing us so often lol, give us a chance for the heart to mend between showing us these outstanding shrimp!

The carbon rili, any idea how they came to be? I know velvets came from rili that came from cherry, but I've never heard the origin story of the carbon rili before

One interesting thing he mentioned was "Bacteria pressure", which I guess just means number of bacteria around.  Yet I see all these other videos from shrimpkeepers bragging about how much bacteria their filtering system holds. Also interesting is no mention of using anti-biotics to treat bacterial infection.  I think that has fallen out of favor recently.

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.
