Cleaning substrate - getting rid of smell

OK guys, I've shutdown my main tank as I'm in the process of replacing it with a new one. I've got 1mm pebble substrate sitting in a wheelbarrow which I've already washed a few times. It stinks like melted algae that's gone off :sour:. What's the best way to "freshen" it up as I don't want the smell to accompany it back into the house. I don't mind doing a chemical bath of as long as it's shrimp friendly.

Hydro peroxide ? That's my solution to most things....bhahahahaha

add in some activated charcoal into a filter, and run it , keep stirring it up so that the filter can do the job of clearing it up

Purigen will pull anything organic out, its usually organic waste that's causing the smell. You'd have to use a filter with this method as well. :encouragement:

Thanks guys but I'm trying to clean before I put back into the tank. A H2O2 bath sounds like it may do the trick. Thanks BB

Or you could spread it out thinly outside in full sun. It should cook and sterilize!
