I have returned

Recommended Posts

I have returned to the land of shrimping. Disappeared following the explosion of constant unknown deaths of my snow whites and crs. Needless to say i was very disheartened and was considering giving up the hobby until i return somewhere civilised however am persevering and with that i return :) .

Now you will all have to put up with me again :)

Welcome back Oz! I know exactly what you went through, almost gave up a few times but "just when I thought I was out...they pull me back in!"

Welcome back dude, this is one addiction where the draw is just too strong, even after major setbacks, good to see you back on the horse! super-happy-dance-smiley-emoticon_zpsc6d02718.gif

yeah' date=' welcome back ! so how can we help to get you back with a vengence ? whats the plans ?[/quote']

Arrgh password reset issues couldnt log in for ages and couldnt get the rest field to be correct, stupid question.

I am just watching my shrimp and hoping they reproduce, got 4 snow whites left and about 10 or so CRS, about 30 red rili blue genes which have thrown 3 blues (all female unfortunately). If my CRS and snow whites keep dieing i will probably just go back to cherries as living in the middle of no where hasnt been helping me any when i have issues.

I think in time i will hopefully end up back on my feet, i did a rescape after all my deaths and it sort of reinvigorated the passion a little bit :). Just disappointed that i lost nearly all the snows i brought from dean :(. As they say whats meant to be is meant to be :)

I am planning on saving up for a better canister filter to improve my filtration as my aquis 1200 runnining into aquis 1000 is causing my issues when i clean the filter trying to get it running again as it also runs through my chiller.

I dont think i will actively pursue my snow white hopes until i move in 2 years due to the local water quality here, its so crap we cant even drink it without feeling crap. Thankfully has had rain water however

Wouldn't a cheap RO unit fix this issue? With the amount of money we spend on shrimp it think it is a must.

Or collecting rain water. That's the benefits of living in the middle of nowhere, rain is not as polluted as the metro areas.

One interesting thing he mentioned was "Bacteria pressure", which I guess just means number of bacteria around.  Yet I see all these other videos from shrimpkeepers bragging about how much bacteria their filtering system holds. Also interesting is no mention of using anti-biotics to treat bacterial infection.  I think that has fallen out of favor recently.

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.
