Just a question regarding size of tanks ... if you where setting up a rack of tanks ( say 8 ) what size tanks would you choose and would you filter individually or have a combined filter system

Cheers

Have done exactly that combination myself already using a stand that can hold 2 tanks of 120 x 60 x 45 tall, each of those split for a total of 4 tanks. Then for the tank shelf I used a 120 x 60 x 45 divided into four as individual breeding groups.

I also went with individual filtration for each tank which admittedly has increased the cost however I have the advantage of being able to keep a wider range of shrimp/fish by tailoring each individual tank to meet my requirements.

If you're going with a combined filtration system then do ensure you have a good UV filter to kill any potential outbreaks.

I have gone the other way & I have ten 2x1.5x1.5 tanks on a rack, each tank is individually plumbed & they all run off a single sump, I also have a sponge filter in each tank in case I have to switch any tank out of the system to medicate etc. The advantages of doing it this way is that I can scoop shrimp out & put them an another tank without needing to re-acclimatize them & I have an auto waterchange system which takes a lot of the work out of keeping the shrimp, I just feed them & stare at them. :victorious:

It really depends on what you want to do, if you just want to keep a wide range of shrimp & breed with no specific plans the the individually filtered tanks is the way to go, this way, as BigD mentioned, you can keep a wide range of varying WP. But if you want to have specific colour or pattern programs & really do it right, then you should really have a sumped system as, to do a selective program properly, you really need at least three tanks per program. :encouragement:

Thank you for the info , I have run individual and shared systems before but that was purely as a fish breeding situation ... shrimp well that's another thing

I was thinking of mainly sticking to variants of cherry shrimp but in saying that I would like to try my hand at Crystals etc someday

I am in the process of setting up 8 tanks plumbed to a single sump, one lot of water changes and tests. Will aim for a ph of 6.5 so I can keep cherries, crystals and tibees. Tbs will be kept in separate setup at around 6ph.

One interesting thing he mentioned was "Bacteria pressure", which I guess just means number of bacteria around.  Yet I see all these other videos from shrimpkeepers bragging about how much bacteria their filtering system holds. Also interesting is no mention of using anti-biotics to treat bacterial infection.  I think that has fallen out of favor recently.

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.
