striving 4 PRL

Recommended Posts

So here is the story so far, blah blah blah.

After keeping and breeding shrimps for about one years now, i've decide to just keep and breed Crs. Yes I am striving 4 PRL. I just can't go past a deep solid red and white of these shrimps.

My project will be very simple. I will have one selective breeding tank and one display tank (not going to stop them from breeding in here off course).

This will be my display tank.

I also have some native shrimps in this tank as well, include DAS, DRNS and glass shrimps as well as a few yellows.

Here is my selective breeding tank, (not much of a tank) but it is doing it job.

BEDB932B-1A4C-4200-A9F2-521447C37185-3837-000004BF85DA4CCB.jpg

As you can see there is 3 sections to the tank. Smallest section will contain one 1 sss male to a few sss/white female. Second Section will contain one SSS male and a few selective SS and A/S female. The largest section will contain all the solids colour Crs A grade female with SS or above female.

My aim with the selective breeding tank is to only breed SS and above male with selected female. Hence I will try to only have A grade female only and all male in this tank will be SS and above.

Hope all that make sense. Please don't hesitate to give me feedback. Negative or positive, all is welcome.

Anythings else that I've miss, please ask.

Cheers

My understanding of PRL is that there are no Golden (or Snowwhite?) genes only CRS .... so you need to do crosses with Golden Bees to establish your breeding stock does not carry these genes.

I am only parroting what I have read and have no experience of this myself!

Thank you for the head up. I'm working on it.

Fantastic....the more people focus in achieving amazing quality shrimps the better. I've seen a Benibachi PRL overseas, and it was truly amazing !!!! Still expensive at AUD$800 in Thailand, so quality still cost lots of $$$....be great to start a thread of the best quality stock we all have...perhaps once I get me 1st photography lesson on Saturday, I'll post some pics !

Since I love all shrimps and because resources are limited i have to choice but to just concentrate on one like. I really like the Crs from the start, hence I've decide to just concentrate on purely Crs.

Good luck Kev :)

I hope you have success with making 'PRL' and can share with us photos and shrimps :cheerful:

Thank you mate, I'll try to take pic of all the shrimps I'll be putting into this section.

good luck with this project mate, will be very interesting to see how it turns out.

but as was mentioned if you are mixing gold or white with the crs then it wont be PRL.

there is a great article here about starting a PRL program.

Thank you mate.

Added a few shrimps this evening. Sorry they are not the best shoot (iPhone), but you get the idea.

I think those shrimp will cause you to lose your PRL hopes Kev, correct Me if I'm wrong, but arent the mosura type patterns achieved by mixing golden with CRS to achieve SSS faster? If you want prl you need to keep your tank free of this genetic impurity. I'll get into that silane article when I get home to further my knowledge.

Mosura definitely has the SW/GB gene...best to buy from a reputable breeder that has F2/3+, with assurance they havent been X with SW/GB, loo for PRL characteristics (i.e. red legs, strong/deep colouring...), and not worry about pattern (i.e. SSS....), and start your PRL project on the right foot ....

Dammmmmm it!!!!!!

I've already spend all my free saving on all these SSS. What option you guys think I should do now?

Do I try to sources Crs that don't carry gold/sw gene or do I continues to breed my existing stock and putting all the nice deep Crs separate for PRL breed only.

Keeping on mind I'm finding it really hard to sources really nice deep red and white Crs with red legs.

Does anyone have any they are willing to part with? Please pm me.

Don't worry Kev. Just breed the SW/GB gene out of your current stock. Remember patience is the key to shrimp keeping. Might take a couple of years but it's worth it.

Just added a background to my Crs only tank. I'm hoping to use this tank to keep Crs only.

Mean while in the breeding tank I've add this SSS Crs.

With a few generation down the track I aam hoping to get deep colour red and white.

don't worry too much kev, the sss are still amazing colours and it's not like you can't go for line breeding the mosura pattern crs with white legs ;) another amazing type of shrimp! like bluebolts said, just work on the others that you have. cause pure lines are all about line breeding the stocks that you have. keep us updated

Will do Gbang.

I'm in the process of selling all my CBS ATM to just concentrate on crs :)

I've sold most of my CBS and only a few higher grade left.

Woke up to this

Finger cross I can get some nice solid colour Crs out of these.

I've manage to select a few very nice solid colour Crs for the project. Will upload the pic once I have taken better pic.

Yeah, cancer risk was a thing I'd seen mentioned a lot when looking into gentian violet briefly. I kinda just figured it might only be as bad as the cancer risk of malachite green as well, but maybe I should look into it more. I've been doing a pretty good job of not getting it on my skin and also avoiding dunking my unprotected hands into the tank water while treating my fish at least, though. Maybe I'll just not use it once I'm done this course of medication anyways, because I know a store I can sometimes get to that's pretty distant carries both malachite green and methylene blue, and in pretty large quantities.

Can't help you with Gentian Violet, sorry. It is banned in Australia violet for potential toxicity, and even possible cancer risks. I thought it was banned in Canada as well. At least, you now know why there isn't much info on gentian violet medication and it's use. But keep an eye on the snails after a week. If it affects the snails, it might not kill them immediately. So keep checking for up to a week. Much safer options out there. No point risking your own life over unsafe products.

Hello! I have a tank that currently does not contain shrimp, but does contain neon tetras which I am currently treating for Ich, as well as some bladder snails. Shrimp will be a later addition, likely cherry shrimp but I'm still doing research just to be sure. Initially I'd intended to buy some sort of Ich-fighting product that contains malachite green after doing a decent bit of research on it, most of which indicated that it should be shrimp-safe so I'd be good if I ever needed to use it again once shrimp were actually introduced (though I should note I'm aware shrimp can't get Ich, I'm more wondering in case the tetras could get Ich again, or something else that responds to similar medication). I ended up not being able to find any MG-containing products without either having to travel quite far or wait multiple days for delivery (which I was worried could lead the Ich to be fatal), and ended up picking up 'Top Fin Ick Remedy', a product that contains gentian violet which is a triarylmethane dye like malachite green. The bottle has two slightly differently worded warnings about its use with invertebrates ("not recommended for" and "not safe for" respectively), but when I'd been researching malachite green, I'd also heard of products that contain MG but not any other ingredients that would be harmful to inverts still being branded with warnings that they could be harmful, just as a "just-in-case" since the manufacturer didn't test it on any inverts, and I'm wondering if maybe it could be a similar situation here. I'm having a very very hard time finding information about gentian violet's use in fishkeeping at all though, it seems currently extremely uncommon. What I will say though is that I'm on day 2 of treating my tetras with it, and the bladder snails seem just fine -- in fact today I noticed what looked to be a bladder snail that appeared to be newly hatched (because of its size) that I hadn't seen before that was zipping around the tank without issue. But obviously, shrimp are not snails, and bladder snails are also notoriously hardy little guys, so what I'm seeing right now could easily be totally inapplicable to cherry shrimp. It might even be inapplicable to other species of snails, for all I know. Has anyone else here ever used anything that contains gentian violet in a tank that actually does contain shrimp? Were they okay, or should I make sure to not use it once shrimp are added?

One interesting thing he mentioned was "Bacteria pressure", which I guess just means number of bacteria around.  Yet I see all these other videos from shrimpkeepers bragging about how much bacteria their filtering system holds. Also interesting is no mention of using anti-biotics to treat bacterial infection.  I think that has fallen out of favor recently.
