Random pics from trip to Cairns

Once again thanks to Bob aka Northboy for the trip.

Whilst up in Cairns I saw lots of pretty spectacular stuff and I'll be posting a few pics up whenever I have the chance along with some pics and water quality parameters related to specific rivers/creeks, perfect for basing biotope tanks on.

So first up, here is a pic of an IAL tree. Bob has said on numerous occasions that these are common in Cairns but these things are everywhere. I saw at least a dozen every day I was up there.

Some of the places we sampled were not all glamour. In fact, they weren't much more than drains. Yet these were teeming with fish. For example found maccullochi rainbowfish, purple spot gudgeons, red emperor gudgeons, cairnsichthys rainbows, platies (introduced exotic) in this drain beside a road.

This drain also had some interesting plants besides the schools of rainbowfish and red emperor gudgeons

Awesome stuff Ben, very interesting info. :victorious: All those leaves just sitting there waiting to be picked up & fed to shrimp, there's a couple of trees in brisvegas but nothing like that. :dejection:

Some more.

Coconuts = tropical. Except these weren't on a beach, these were in a park next to a busy highway.

Spot the red "finches" (correct me if I've got the wrong type of bird Bob), there are two.

Finally an endangered rarity that not many people even think to look for. I certainly didn't see it until Bob pointed it out. This is Australia's smallest native parrot, The double-eyed fig parrot.

Mate you did well on the Blood Finch and the Fig Parrot female. Top shots with a point and shoot.

It was not just in the water we looked

This is what a lot of the scenery is, cane, mountains and rainforest. Its a odd mix but you get used to it.

Never knew scorpions fluoresce until I went on his trip. Bob pulled this guy out of a bit of rainforest.

Do it, what I have shown so far is just a tiny fraction of what I saw.

Don't forget also that interesting and beautiful plants, mosses, shrimp, algae, fish, ect ect can be found close by to most people. Have a look at some of the other field trips, close to big cities. The only way to see it is to get out and explore.

How about an SKF conference weekend where everyone flies up to stay with Bob in tents with marshmallows and field trips :D

Done that before, a couple of others and myself put up the ANGFA guys and took them around for a few days a couple of years ago.

Not on much land any more so no camping or a couple at max, I have 3 spare rooms and there is good pub accommodation down the road though x 3.

  • 4 weeks later...

Can't believe I didn't put this up already.

Spotlighting on the way to Barney Springs, spotted this guy.

Green possum, didn't know they existed until I saw this one.

Freaking awesome.

One interesting thing he mentioned was "Bacteria pressure", which I guess just means number of bacteria around.  Yet I see all these other videos from shrimpkeepers bragging about how much bacteria their filtering system holds. Also interesting is no mention of using anti-biotics to treat bacterial infection.  I think that has fallen out of favor recently.

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.
