My first tank

Recommended Posts

Hi all, as promised here's some pics of my tank.

I have some Java moss from my first setup tied to some weights out back but they'll need to grow before they become a feature which I'm hoping they will :)

Looking to get some tenants on Tuesday possibly.

Well it'll be RCS for starters then depending on how they go a few different kinds I hope...then move onto a multi-tank setup :)

That's the right attitude, slowly slowly & you can work your way up through the various grades of CRS/CBS then the same with Taiwan Bees/Tigers :victorious:

Wow I've never seen a tank like yours before, very interesting unit. I think you will do fine with rcs. Thanks for sharing the pics :)

it's a Fluval Chi, they make some awesome looking tanks...the Fluval Edge is amazing to see in person but access is a pain. definitely aiming to get it greener with lots of places for critters to hide and stuff :)

Awesome themed tank. Not a fan of the scary angels, they'll turn you to stone if you look away, be warned!

Thanks!! :) I had a dalek in the first incarnation figured the cybermen needed a turn. Having an angel there helps the stares...no blinking! ;) I used to have a laugh whenever there was a couple or more shrimp perched on an angel having a nom, if only they knew!

I've been waiting 6 weeks for a tank to cycle patience is the key but we all want everything yesterday . Once the water is right and your shrimp move in you will be entranced we think they hypnotise you to bring them the best of everything they are the biggest time wasters of all I think . You sit down and watch them when you have a spare minute or two and several hours later you realise you had lost yourself in them

Lol!! A mate gave me the best line about tank today...he said "must've taken forever to fill with the TARDIS doors open!" Funny bigger :)

The moss balls look great. Like little green planets. Your shrimp have already taken to them too!! Great work!

Thanks Newbreed to quote Kath Day-Knight I'm trying to "team with the theme" lol

The worst part is handling the invisible thread...a warning Ineke, it'll take 10mins to put it together then an hour to tie knots in the thread lol

One interesting thing he mentioned was "Bacteria pressure", which I guess just means number of bacteria around.  Yet I see all these other videos from shrimpkeepers bragging about how much bacteria their filtering system holds. Also interesting is no mention of using anti-biotics to treat bacterial infection.  I think that has fallen out of favor recently.

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.
