My Eheim 2217 has stopped working... it still sounds like its working but its not pumping any water at all.

Worst thing is, i cant for the life of me get the top off to open it up and have a look! Any tips???

There's gotta be a blockage somewhere & that would be causing the inside to be under vacuum, that would probably be why you can't get the top off. Maybe open the tap going to the inlet at the bottom & try getting the top off then. If i was going to take a guess at the problem inside, I'd say there'd have to be a sludge build up somewhere, maybe the impeller housing? :confused:

Lol amkr!

I got the top off but not sure how to access the impeller? It's only been running for a few months so surely the sludge cant have built up that fast?

Sounds like it could be an airblock.

Did you try priming it. Suck the hoses and then throw up at the amount of gross *hit you just drank.

See if that helps.

OK so i tried sucking through the outlet hose and nothing so there must be a blockage... I just have no idea how to access the impeller part :(

did you get a mouthful of air or just a blocked resistance?

Did you check the taps are open? :p

that may help, shows how to get into the pump area.

Torface, have you tried laying the canister on its side while its working?

That gets the air out, once you think the air is out, gradually lift the canister to an upright position. That works with mine, but only if its a air blockage.

Thanks for that link amkr, thats very helpful. Thought i'd try ninjas laying on the side thing before i opened it up... it seems to work on its side but not to full capacity i think... then when i tip it up it stops working again?

its airlocked I think.

Basically theres air trapped around the impellor, Stops water getting passed through.

So how do i fix it?

I tried sucking when it's upright and all i get is air, I cant suck hard enough to get the water through (LOL) but then if i suck when its on its side the water somehow manages to bypass the air and i get a mouthful of air!

Try slowly rocking it back to the upright position, this way you'll hopefully remove the air slowly, as soon as it stops rock it back down to get it started again & repeat till all the air is gone :encouragement:

Fill it with water.

Then put the inlet hose in the tank.

Switch it on.

Get an ambulance on stand by.

Suck on the return hose like you are the person greensleeves was written about.

Wake up in ER.

Return home to working filter and flooded house.

Hi Torface,

funny enough but yesterday i cleaned/did a media swap on my 2217. when it was all hooked back up the flow was about half its normal strength. i noticed air bubbles in the spray bar and from experience once u pull apart these filters it takes an hour or so for all the little air bubbles to work themselves loose.

if ur filter is making a noise that will go away real soon dont worry.. its just more air bubbles flowing through the head. give it 1 hr n u should have a solid 1000lph flow :)

but yeah its funny how the thing that makes it work is shaking the hell out of it.. very well engineered and scientific :p

      One interesting thing he mentioned was "Bacteria pressure", which I guess just means number of bacteria around.  Yet I see all these other videos from shrimpkeepers bragging about how much bacteria their filtering system holds. Also interesting is no mention of using anti-biotics to treat bacterial infection.  I think that has fallen out of favor recently.

      It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

      I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding?
