A while ago Ninja quietly asked me if I would like a few male Tibees just for show NOT to be bred with. Of course I said yes because the are awesome little shrimp- and I was soon to find out big personality shrimp. she sent me some males who tried escaping every tank I tried them in even giving each other piggy backs to climb over the walls!!!! Funny to watch but I lost 2 over the weeks as they climbed right out of the tanks. Hence all the shifting around of my shrimp and giving away all my Red Cherries, trying to find a tank they could not escape from and no shrimp they could breed with.

I eventually sorted them out and found they weren't happy in the lower ph tanks and now they are living happily in my Rilli tank which is deep and has np escape route- well none they have found yet.

Over the last few weeks I watched and wondered was that a female now I'm hopeless at sexing any thing but cherries so wasn't sure then he developed a black head and back so a picture went off to Ninja - could this be a girl but the picture wasn't much good so I thought maybe I'm seeing things.

Anyway water change day on Sunday and blow me down yesterday I saw this- now you have to look hard as he/she has tucked them up high but yesterday she had quite a few eggs hangingp><p>The picture doesn

So first of all a huge thank you to Ninja for taking me under her wing and also for these amazing little shrimp they really do have character. I think there may be one more girl but the saddle is just forming I think. Ninja is now cool with me letting you know I have them and even though I wasn't meant to breed them I didn't really have any choice the deed was done! Why is it I'm trying to breed my Crystals with no luck and I'm not trying to breed Tibees and they go and breed anyway?

Thanks Ninja:congratulatory:

Yes BB they were some boys Ninja didn't need in her breeding program. I have them all together but only with cherries so definitely a male from that group with very similar pattern- some slightly better pattern than others. There is one slightly smaller one coming on that looks like it may be a girl and its pattern is slightly more defined. Hopefully she will carry the eggs through but as this is her first batch I understand they some times have moulting issues towards the end of carrying so here's hoping. I will update if she has the babies.

For your interest

TDS 180

GH 6

KH 2

PH 7.1

Nitrate 5

RO water

Fluval shrimp stratum

Sulawesi salts-because of the Rillis

They were not happy at a ph of 6.5

Cheers

This comment proves you are a hardcore happy dancer. I can imagine those spaghetti legs in action. Going to wait a few days before they drop then I will remind Ineke to prepare herself. But for now, loooooong wait Ineke.

Thanks guys yes I was very lucky to be given the Tibees as they were surplus to Ninja's needs . I was a bit worried at first when I thought I had a girl but it's OK now but it's still a long time before she drops and a lot can happen:encouragement:

Why not grab a RO unit? They are so cheap atm and imo a neccessity if you want the correct WP.

I have learnt not to be checking the days anymore, I forget about the date and before I know it they have dropped! So much less stressful!

On a side note, tonight I watched as one of my tiger girls pushed her saddle down (with a hunched back, you could almost feel her pain!) down to her underbelly...It took no more than a minute to complete! It was something I was lucky enough to catch...thought about making a run for the camera but then I would have missed the show! Sorry guys :cower:

[/quote']I totally agree with you dude, I write down the date in a book & then I don't look at the book till they drop & it's generally pretty close to 28 days but I certainly don't count the days. The wait doesn't bother me really, I work stupid long hours most days & before I know it the shrimplets are here :victorious:Just a little sweet payback, lol :victorious:

Alright, I've done a bit more research on gentian violet's cancer-causing potential but I haven't yet done research on malachite green's to compare. But from reading the California propositon 65 document about GV (North Americans incl. some Canadians will recognize this as the law that causes some products they buy to be labelled with "known to the state of California to cause cancer", including the exact product I bought) it seems that the risk of cancer is related to internal use, either injection or ingestion. Speaking of ingestion, I think GV bans mainly relate to its use in treating fish/shrimp/etc. which are intended for human consumption, because of the above. And in countries where GV isn't banned for this purpose, it does seem to get used on various species of shrimp without causing any issue for the shrimp themselves (at least enough so for shrimp farming purposes). See the following: In February, the FDA Began Rejecting Imported Shrimp for Gentian Violet and Chloramphenicol (2022 article by Southern Shrimp Alliance) FDA Starts New Calendar Year by Refusing Antibiotic-Contaminated Shrimp from Three BAP-Certified Indian Processors and Adding a BAP-Certified Vietnamese Processor to Import Alert (2024 article by Southern Shrimp Alliance) Southern Shrimp Alliance and some other organizations have tons of other articles in this vein, but I'd be here for a while and would end up writing an absolutely massive post if I were to link every instance I found of articles mentioning shrimp shipments with gentian violet and/or leucogentian violet registering as contaminants. That being said, I know shrimp farmed for consumption and dwarf shrimp are often somewhat distantly related (in fact, the one time a shrimp's species name is listed that I can see, it's the prawn sp. Macrobrachium rosenbergii, who at best occupies the same infraorder as Neocaridina davidi but nothing nearer), but this at least gives a slightly better way of guessing whether it will be safe for aquarium dwarf shrimp or not than my bladder snail anecdote from the OP.

I would hazard a guess that perhaps those eggs were unfertilized and thereby unviable? Did the eggs change colour, usually yellow to grey as the yolks used up, or any eyes in the eggs. Is your water ok, using RO remineralised and the parameters in range, as I have heard others say that if the water isn't good it can 'force' a molt? How is it going overall, do you have a good size colony in the tank, you may have reached 'maximum occupancy' as a tank can only support so many occupants.

Hello folks,  The current problem I am having is that my Taiwan bee shrimp are molting before all their eggs have hatched.  Often the shrimp keep the eggs for 40+ days.  During that time, they lose about half or so, either due to dropping or duds or whatever.  Shortly before molting they look to have about a dozen left, and then they molt with about half a dozen eggs still on the shell.  Then the other shirmp will come and eat the shell.  These last few times, I have been getting around 0-3 surviving babies per batch.  I figure I can make the eggs hatch faster by raising the water temperature more (currently around 68F, which is already a few degrees higher than I used to keep it) or make the shrimp grow slower by feeding them less (protein).  Currently I feed Shrimp King complete every other day, and also a small dab of Shrimp Fit alternating days.  Maybe I can start alternating with more vegetable food like mulberry?  or just decrease the amount of food?

Yeah, cancer risk was a thing I'd seen mentioned a lot when looking into gentian violet briefly. I kinda just figured it might only be as bad as the cancer risk of malachite green as well, but maybe I should look into it more. I've been doing a pretty good job of not getting it on my skin and also avoiding dunking my unprotected hands into the tank water while treating my fish at least, though. Maybe I'll just not use it once I'm done this course of medication anyways, because I know a store I can sometimes get to that's pretty distant carries both malachite green and methylene blue, and in pretty large quantities.

Can't help you with Gentian Violet, sorry. It is banned in Australia violet for potential toxicity, and even possible cancer risks. I thought it was banned in Canada as well. At least, you now know why there isn't much info on gentian violet medication and it's use. But keep an eye on the snails after a week. If it affects the snails, it might not kill them immediately. So keep checking for up to a week. Much safer options out there. No point risking your own life over unsafe products.
