sending shrimp in winter

With summer now gone with the challenges of shrimp getting cooked when sent in the mail winter is coming.

I was wondering how we could post shrimp without them getting frozen.

Current night time temperatures are 8degrees and getting lower.

8 degrees?? you can bang that one LOL 16c is to cold LOL

If you use a Polly box that helps, BUT they nearly all ride on a freight air craft if going inter state, that is not warmed so they get dam cold, sitting around a post office or freight depot has no comparison to that.

Using heat packs NA, one big problem with them! they require oxygen to work so once they use up the air in you box they slow then stop and if you are relying on breather bags, it defeats the purpose because the air is used up, that one I know for a fact from working for a Fish importer and having a Quarantine room my self, when you open the boxes from OS the heat packs are the same temp as the box, when they have contact with air again the warm up. mind you they have a short life span, we use to open some heat packs in winter to put in our boots to warm up, if we were out side they would last about 2 hours, foot odder may have done them in LOL.

The best way is a poly box lined with a few layers of news paper, news paper works well, (homeless on the park bench!!)

I use to get a lot of Betta and I noticed they would punch a small hole in the lid of polybox and tape the heatpack to inside of lid therefore oxygen is constantly supplied.

Where do you get these heat packs?

The IBC(International Betta Congress) website shop sells them, Betta breeders all over the US use them to send fish to shows all the time, especially in winter. There is also an online store in Brisbane who sells them :encouragement:

One interesting thing he mentioned was "Bacteria pressure", which I guess just means number of bacteria around.  Yet I see all these other videos from shrimpkeepers bragging about how much bacteria their filtering system holds. Also interesting is no mention of using anti-biotics to treat bacterial infection.  I think that has fallen out of favor recently.

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.
