Just wondering who uses what uv sterilisers? How do they for to your tank? Are they inline to a canister filter? How would you fit one onto a sump?

Simple, they go inline on the return line between the pump & your tank :encouragement: I'm definitely getting one for my new system :applause:

But what if the tubes are a different size?

Id like to know which ones people use and why... I've seen some reasonably priced ones and some super expensive ones...

Because some are just water clarifiers (although they claim otherwise) and not actual UV steralisers! Some will do better jobs than others...

Yeah the cheaper ones will mainly do algae & the more expensive ones do more bacteria & protozoa, all depends on what you need it for :encouragement:

Different size hoses aren't a problem, just get hose adapters :victorious:

I'll PM you the one I'm getting cause it's not from a sponsor :encouragement:

Hmm i guess I need to find out a bit more about how they work... They seem like such a good idea though :)

Squiggle, I don't like the sound of having to get hose adapters... I'm hopeless and you know how much I hate bunnings :( lol no joke last time I went in to get bits for my RO, it took over an hour... I'll just have to get a steriliser that fits my hoses :p

Most of them have multiple adapters & you just use the one you need for your hoses :encouragement:

I know you hate Bunnings, lol, like you said, just have to get one that fits :encouragement:

What's RC stuff? Scuba diver, hey? I'm a divemaster but I got over it and haven't dived in years

My other hobby is polo.. Probably up there as one of the worlds most expensive sports... I got asked if I wanted to play in a high profile tournament recently... It was $10,000... I politely declined LOL

Everything RC, cars, boats, planes, heli's. I used to race 1/10th cars in modified & stock classes & keeping up with the top guys is expensive, just a chassis costs about $1000, then you need the rest of the stuff. A competitive car could cost about $5000 to set up right :dejection:Yeah I'm only a rescue diver, wanted to go divemaster but changed job & well, the rest is history, still got all my gear in both hobbies$10000 to go in a tournament, holy crap! :dejection:

I always use UV on my systems, it is all about contact time, one trick is to use a smaller pump so the water is in contact longer.

DON'T go to bunnings its a waste of time, go to a plumbing or irrigation shop, OK you will pay a bit more but dam you get service and the right answer, it has me stuffed why every one goes there for specialist parts, they don't have specialists or the parts there.

I probably should, but it never crossed my mind to look for one before sas Bunnings is just down the road.So if you need greater contact time, surely having one inline with a 1200 lph, sump pump for instance, would not be ideal. However, having a separate pump for the steriliser would possibly mean that not all the water gets treated surely?

Both my tanks use the dolphin brand UV.... Aquotix' date=' has them on special ATM, $189 down to $110.

Thanks BB. Do you know what size system that would suit roughly? It doesnt say on the website...

Has anyone had any experience with the Aquazonic sterilisers?

Not sure....best to PM/email Aquotix for confirmation.

+1 about the flow rate to the UV.....to fast of a flow would lesson it's effect. Each UV unit has a recommended flow rate, so best to know what pump you maybe using. And working back from that ...

Thanks :)

I have emailed them to ask. I have noticed that most of them seem to have a fairly large max flow rate, larger than my pump anyway...

I just got a response from Aquotix, so if anyone is interested, the steriliser that BB recommended(http://www.aquariumonlinestore.com.au/products-page/uv-sterilizers/inline-uv-sterilizer-18watt/) is rated for 12000L. They have a recommended flow rate of 2800l/h and a maximum of 4000l/h. They also have tapered hose barbs to take hoses of varying diameters from 12mm to 25mm.

Alright, I've done a bit more research on gentian violet's cancer-causing potential but I haven't yet done research on malachite green's to compare. But from reading the California propositon 65 document about GV (North Americans incl. some Canadians will recognize this as the law that causes some products they buy to be labelled with "known to the state of California to cause cancer", including the exact product I bought) it seems that the risk of cancer is related to internal use, either injection or ingestion. Speaking of ingestion, I think GV bans mainly relate to its use in treating fish/shrimp/etc. which are intended for human consumption, because of the above. And in countries where GV isn't banned for this purpose, it does seem to get used on various species of shrimp without causing any issue for the shrimp themselves (at least enough so for shrimp farming purposes). See the following: In February, the FDA Began Rejecting Imported Shrimp for Gentian Violet and Chloramphenicol (2022 article by Southern Shrimp Alliance) FDA Starts New Calendar Year by Refusing Antibiotic-Contaminated Shrimp from Three BAP-Certified Indian Processors and Adding a BAP-Certified Vietnamese Processor to Import Alert (2024 article by Southern Shrimp Alliance) Southern Shrimp Alliance and some other organizations have tons of other articles in this vein, but I'd be here for a while and would end up writing an absolutely massive post if I were to link every instance I found of articles mentioning shrimp shipments with gentian violet and/or leucogentian violet registering as contaminants. That being said, I know shrimp farmed for consumption and dwarf shrimp are often somewhat distantly related (in fact, the one time a shrimp's species name is listed that I can see, it's the prawn sp. Macrobrachium rosenbergii, who at best occupies the same infraorder as Neocaridina davidi but nothing nearer), but this at least gives a slightly better way of guessing whether it will be safe for aquarium dwarf shrimp or not than my bladder snail anecdote from the OP.

I would hazard a guess that perhaps those eggs were unfertilized and thereby unviable? Did the eggs change colour, usually yellow to grey as the yolks used up, or any eyes in the eggs. Is your water ok, using RO remineralised and the parameters in range, as I have heard others say that if the water isn't good it can 'force' a molt? How is it going overall, do you have a good size colony in the tank, you may have reached 'maximum occupancy' as a tank can only support so many occupants.

Hello folks,  The current problem I am having is that my Taiwan bee shrimp are molting before all their eggs have hatched.  Often the shrimp keep the eggs for 40+ days.  During that time, they lose about half or so, either due to dropping or duds or whatever.  Shortly before molting they look to have about a dozen left, and then they molt with about half a dozen eggs still on the shell.  Then the other shirmp will come and eat the shell.  These last few times, I have been getting around 0-3 surviving babies per batch.  I figure I can make the eggs hatch faster by raising the water temperature more (currently around 68F, which is already a few degrees higher than I used to keep it) or make the shrimp grow slower by feeding them less (protein).  Currently I feed Shrimp King complete every other day, and also a small dab of Shrimp Fit alternating days.  Maybe I can start alternating with more vegetable food like mulberry?  or just decrease the amount of food?

Yeah, cancer risk was a thing I'd seen mentioned a lot when looking into gentian violet briefly. I kinda just figured it might only be as bad as the cancer risk of malachite green as well, but maybe I should look into it more. I've been doing a pretty good job of not getting it on my skin and also avoiding dunking my unprotected hands into the tank water while treating my fish at least, though. Maybe I'll just not use it once I'm done this course of medication anyways, because I know a store I can sometimes get to that's pretty distant carries both malachite green and methylene blue, and in pretty large quantities.

Can't help you with Gentian Violet, sorry. It is banned in Australia violet for potential toxicity, and even possible cancer risks. I thought it was banned in Canada as well. At least, you now know why there isn't much info on gentian violet medication and it's use. But keep an eye on the snails after a week. If it affects the snails, it might not kill them immediately. So keep checking for up to a week. Much safer options out there. No point risking your own life over unsafe products.
