Hey everyone.

Just wondering if anybody has used 'fluval shrimp stratum' and if they could give me a review on any pro/con they found with it.

Thanks!

I have it in my tank, however I'm a shrimp noob and can't offer much of a review :(

I got it from AOA as the guys in there are super keen on it, was told I could add it to my allready running bare bottom tank and would get no spikes.. I was told to wash it first but could not get the water to run clear so just dumped it in, water went black for a couple hours then cleared up nicely.. I know I should have not had any little creatures in the tank when I did it ;) but they all survived the whole ordeal.

Sorry not much of a review , more like one of those boring stories your uncle tells you at a family gathering.

Nah appreciated mate. Thank you!

Did you end up getting any spikes? And what does your pH sit at? And what's the pH from the tap?

Cheers.

Ph from tap is 7.8 and in tank is slightly higher than 7.2.. Although I'm not using nearly as much as I should be, it's only about 1cm deep.

I am sorry to say that I have heard bad reviews for that soil from very reputable shrimp breeder (MananaP from Canada). Myself, I have tested it but over a long run the pH was not buffered so well. However, the main problem was/is that baby shrimp have a low survival rate... I am not sure if FLUVAL may has fixed this issue, as I used one one the very first batches. Anyway, watch closely if you have a good shrimplet survival rate or not.

Wow:( I got it because I heard it was good:(

I'm unsure if they have or haven't changed anything, sure hope they have. I have tiny crs that I have introduced that are doing fine, also have some berried yellow cherries so I'll see how they go :( you have me worried now!

One interesting thing he mentioned was "Bacteria pressure", which I guess just means number of bacteria around.  Yet I see all these other videos from shrimpkeepers bragging about how much bacteria their filtering system holds. Also interesting is no mention of using anti-biotics to treat bacterial infection.  I think that has fallen out of favor recently.

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.
