changed my cube

If you want to be sure about the gravel, put a handful in a bit of RO water and test before and a few days/week after.

The white gravel is a great idea how to make your chocolate shrimp more visible. :encouragement:

I have problems seeing my yellows in between all the plants in my tank....unfortunately most plants only come in that colour :smiley_simmons: Bummer!

Yes the yellows are difficult for me too but I can even see them now.

There was no change overnight in PH or GH and I have now done my second cube. Learnt one huge lesson though. Even though I have cut back on feeding there was a lot of muck in the gravel so put the power filter on and cleaned it up. I am going to cut back on the feeding even more now as that was not good! Will have to feed 2 or 3 times a week and see how it goes. Even my big tank could keep the shrimp alive just by the biofilm so will only feed the 2 newly set up tanks daily until a bit of biofilm is visible. I thought I had done so well in cutting back -hate to think what it would have been like if I hadn't cut back!!!

Awesome work Ineke, great to hear everything has worked out well with the changeover. The best thing about shrimp(other than the obvious) is that you only need to fed them every two or three days, as I read somewhere, they are like the Hybrid cars of the aquatic world, they run on very little fuel compared to other underwater creatures. I love that I can go away for the weekend now & not have to worry about getting someone to feed them for me. Just another bonus feature from our lovely little shrimpie friends :victorious:

Point taken and I use them in most of my tanks but thinking back now I used a pellet of spirulina about the size of a rabbit pellet and it dissolved and went everywhere before I could siphon it out. The shrimp loved it but even with the dishes they pulled it all over the place. A visit to Ikea is on the cards to get some little candle holders. The spirulina has now been cut into tiny pieces and only fed occassionally.

Squiggle yes it is great I just need to get over my feeding everything addiction!!! When I first started with fish the renowned Herbert Axelrod stated something along the lines that to keep fish healthy every time you walk past the aquarium you feed one time and change water the next. So feeding little and often has been my maxim with fish over the years but shrimp are much different and I think my pinch of food has gotten bigger!!!!!! Any way I haven't lost any shrimp for a good while so something must be ok, the tank didn't smell WP were good and I hope I have learnt a lesson:encouragement:

I agree that fish are healthier with small & often but as you've said, shrimp are a whole different ball game & I've had to use self control with feeding as well, especially when shrimplets are involved :encouragement:

I'm slowly getting better but I do think it may have been the pellets because although they weren't huge i posted a picture of how they swelled up- it was like a huge pile of dung!!!

Yeah you're probably right, there would have been a small amount of shrimp waste too but not very much at all :encouragement:

The cube is an aqua one nano 30 it is 30x30 x30 but has a built in sump which makes the usable area 24x30x30. It has about 27 litres give or take a litre . I have 2 and love them but the sump issue with shrimp climbing into the sump a problem.

To solve this issue on my IQ5, I've cut a strip of fibreglass flyscreen to cover the sump entry slits(?). It's held in place at the top by the clips for the lid but if I didn't have those I'd use some paper clips (as long as they're far enough away from the waterline) or maybe some thin insulated bits of wire like speaker wire.

Since that's been out in place I haven't had any shrimps or babies in the sump.

Have you tried anything like that?

Yes I use a piece of thin filter sponge. The problem is having to have high water levels in one tank and the air line for the sponge filter in the other they climb up and over

Alright, I've done a bit more research on gentian violet's cancer-causing potential but I haven't yet done research on malachite green's to compare. But from reading the California propositon 65 document about GV (North Americans incl. some Canadians will recognize this as the law that causes some products they buy to be labelled with "known to the state of California to cause cancer", including the exact product I bought) it seems that the risk of cancer is related to internal use, either injection or ingestion. Speaking of ingestion, I think GV bans mainly relate to its use in treating fish/shrimp/etc. which are intended for human consumption, because of the above. And in countries where GV isn't banned for this purpose, it does seem to get used on various species of shrimp without causing any issue for the shrimp themselves (at least enough so for shrimp farming purposes). See the following: In February, the FDA Began Rejecting Imported Shrimp for Gentian Violet and Chloramphenicol (2022 article by Southern Shrimp Alliance) FDA Starts New Calendar Year by Refusing Antibiotic-Contaminated Shrimp from Three BAP-Certified Indian Processors and Adding a BAP-Certified Vietnamese Processor to Import Alert (2024 article by Southern Shrimp Alliance) Southern Shrimp Alliance and some other organizations have tons of other articles in this vein, but I'd be here for a while and would end up writing an absolutely massive post if I were to link every instance I found of articles mentioning shrimp shipments with gentian violet and/or leucogentian violet registering as contaminants. That being said, I know shrimp farmed for consumption and dwarf shrimp are often somewhat distantly related (in fact, the one time a shrimp's species name is listed that I can see, it's the prawn sp. Macrobrachium rosenbergii, who at best occupies the same infraorder as Neocaridina davidi but nothing nearer), but this at least gives a slightly better way of guessing whether it will be safe for aquarium dwarf shrimp or not than my bladder snail anecdote from the OP.

I would hazard a guess that perhaps those eggs were unfertilized and thereby unviable? Did the eggs change colour, usually yellow to grey as the yolks used up, or any eyes in the eggs. Is your water ok, using RO remineralised and the parameters in range, as I have heard others say that if the water isn't good it can 'force' a molt? How is it going overall, do you have a good size colony in the tank, you may have reached 'maximum occupancy' as a tank can only support so many occupants.

Hello folks,  The current problem I am having is that my Taiwan bee shrimp are molting before all their eggs have hatched.  Often the shrimp keep the eggs for 40+ days.  During that time, they lose about half or so, either due to dropping or duds or whatever.  Shortly before molting they look to have about a dozen left, and then they molt with about half a dozen eggs still on the shell.  Then the other shirmp will come and eat the shell.  These last few times, I have been getting around 0-3 surviving babies per batch.  I figure I can make the eggs hatch faster by raising the water temperature more (currently around 68F, which is already a few degrees higher than I used to keep it) or make the shrimp grow slower by feeding them less (protein).  Currently I feed Shrimp King complete every other day, and also a small dab of Shrimp Fit alternating days.  Maybe I can start alternating with more vegetable food like mulberry?  or just decrease the amount of food?

Yeah, cancer risk was a thing I'd seen mentioned a lot when looking into gentian violet briefly. I kinda just figured it might only be as bad as the cancer risk of malachite green as well, but maybe I should look into it more. I've been doing a pretty good job of not getting it on my skin and also avoiding dunking my unprotected hands into the tank water while treating my fish at least, though. Maybe I'll just not use it once I'm done this course of medication anyways, because I know a store I can sometimes get to that's pretty distant carries both malachite green and methylene blue, and in pretty large quantities.

Can't help you with Gentian Violet, sorry. It is banned in Australia violet for potential toxicity, and even possible cancer risks. I thought it was banned in Canada as well. At least, you now know why there isn't much info on gentian violet medication and it's use. But keep an eye on the snails after a week. If it affects the snails, it might not kill them immediately. So keep checking for up to a week. Much safer options out there. No point risking your own life over unsafe products.
