First time sponge filter setup

Dead Can Dance

Recommended Posts

Heyas,

My first tank has an Eheim aquacorner 60. I just setup a second tank(60l) and put a schego 250l/hr air pump.

It's my first time installing one. The sponge doesn't sink, so I squeezed it a little but it's still precariously balanced. Will it weigh down with water over time ?

I put a check valve on the line just incase but the line is still quite long. It's practically laying next to the pump with 15/20cm extra. Is that okay ?

Finally, it's vibrating a fair bit. I've turned it down a bit but I'm unsure about how many bubbles should be coming out. The pump is sitting on a hard wooden floor, should I put something under it to quieter it a little ?

Any help is appreciated.

Dead Can Dance.

Does it have a weighted bottom, there are those on the market that require you to put gravel or similar in the base. If it has then it will sink as bacteria develops on it and it soaks in more water.

As long as you have a check valve in place all is good. As long as it isn't creating to much current that it is knocking things about, then I would leave it full blast.

To help with the vibration you may want to put an old mouse pad or cushioning under it.

Perhaps if you post a pic ? I the sponge filter is "floating", either there's air trapped, or the weighted base is missing ? What brand of air pump ? One way valve can go anywhere in-line.

Just keep squeeezin it! I had one the other day that bobbed for a bit, gave it a squeeze and it teetered, then squeezed it again and it sunk like a log.

I don't have a light on that tank yet, but here's a top view;

It's a Schego MS2, I think. The filter has a small weight but I think has a lot of air trapped still.005lmf.jpg

if its still not sitting on the bottom jsut give it a really good squeeze and make sure you dont have that much air hose below the tank that it is pulling on the sponge filter. I had this happen to me because i prefer to have longer air hoses incase i use them later its easier to shrimp them but i cant make them longer again :)

If it has the base on it like the pics? Just squeeze it a few more times. It should sink, some times it just take a few squeezes.

It's on the bottom. Just lightly though. :encouragement:

I think the substrate is a little rough there too.

I'll flatten it all again to make sure it sits nicely.

Rocks

See my rocks to the right of my picture ?

I plan on putting mini pellia or fissidens onto those. Will that be okay ? I mean, it won't cause any trouble for the shrimp / dead spots ?

any rocks fine aslong as you test them before you put them in your tank as you cant just have any rock as alot leach into your tank and will kill the occupants

One interesting thing he mentioned was "Bacteria pressure", which I guess just means number of bacteria around.  Yet I see all these other videos from shrimpkeepers bragging about how much bacteria their filtering system holds. Also interesting is no mention of using anti-biotics to treat bacterial infection.  I think that has fallen out of favor recently.

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.
