Battery Operated Hang On Filter

Thinking of a contingency plan for a nano hang on filter that would fit a small handfull of purigean/charcoal or a small Nitrazorb bag for emergency use.......prefer battery operated ..... anyone able to point me at the right direction ?

Don't know of any battery operated filters but you can get battery operated air pumps on ebay that you may be able to use with an air stone in some sort of filter.:encouragement:

Might have to invent one BB, or look in Japan. When we went to a koi show in 2000, some of the dealers/hobbyists had trucks with filtered, insulated backs on them. Even had large viewing windows in them, so cool!

all we have got is fibreglass tanks, zippered canvas tops and huge portable air pumps.

Why not a simple little UPS? Attach the filter to that and it should be good for a few hours as most pumps are pretty light. Also if you can find somebody

with it on special at the time then you're only looking around $75 for a 600W unit.

Battery backup normally used for PC/Server gear. Can be used with anything with power plug as long the rating from UPS is supported.

Uninterrupatable Power Supply, basically a large battery than runs inline, something like this - http://www.mwave.com.au/product/sku-aa47944-eaton_e_series_nv_1000va600w_ups_with_usb.

Admittedly this is a bit more expensive but I brought two last year at $80 each at the time. Well worth it

Ninja, nothing sinister .... al4n, yes have a backup generator, but ....

it's for use in my nano tanks, when my nitrates go berserk or I need to use activated carbon ...etc, really for emergency situations, without having to use power from a GPO..... Yes, I do over plan, and really looking for a load (say purigen) and shoot (turn the switch on), without having to look for a spare power point/cord or if the electricity goes off etc... just a contingency...thought there maybe something out there that's available ?

Really looking for a nano toto filter that's battery operated.

Thank you BigD I guess when you have expensive shrimp you only need to lose one and the UPS would have paid for it.:encouragement:

How about using those external breeder boxes or invent something similar as a filter? stick media in it then use a battery operated air pump or solar powered to run it. I have seen people modding their HOB filters to use the airlift function to run it instead of using the motor,impeller, from what I can see works pretty good.

Just curious whether the "air lift" function will create enough "pressure/flow" to really activate carbon/purigen.

Depending on the power of the air pump the flow can be just as strong as a motor' date=' therefore it best if you can find a strong pump.

What about one of those home made bottle filters they use overseas. The one using a upturned plastic bottle filled with K1?

you could replace the K1 with Purigen bags or carbon?

      One interesting thing he mentioned was "Bacteria pressure", which I guess just means number of bacteria around.  Yet I see all these other videos from shrimpkeepers bragging about how much bacteria their filtering system holds. Also interesting is no mention of using anti-biotics to treat bacterial infection.  I think that has fallen out of favor recently.

      It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

      I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding?
