Starting new tank

Recommended Posts

Hey there shrimp keepers,I'm starting a new tank just for CBS shrimps. Been having problems with my first batch of ten die on me within a period of around three weeks. I'm not sure on how to get water just right for them. I don't test for water, which now I learned and paid for it the hard way. I breed a lot of different L numbers and only started to play with shrimps after buy some crs and yellow cherrys for my sons own tank. After seeing my sons tank with shrimps, I fell in love with these guys so I started selling of some Lnumbers to fund for shrimps. Went to the local fish shop to of load some Ls and ended getting some pandas and a pair of blue bolts. Was told by the keeper that I didn't need a chiller so I thought I was all good. Took them home and three weeks later they all died. Never again am I buying without doing my homework, but I'm really interested in staring another tank but this time playing it safe with CBS first. So anyone out there that could help as with what I should do to get it right. Ill try one more time hoping that I'm successful in keeping them. If not I think that's the end o my shrimp dreams and back to Ls I go. Anyone out there please help

Oh wow that is an expensive lesson and shrimps to start off with...may I ask if you got the shrimp from the LFS or a breeder that told you a chiller wasn't needed? Especially for those high grades the water must be prestine and stable. My advice is go for the cheaper hardy shrimp and gain some experience first before spending the big bucks on the higher grades.

I'm no expert but if the LFS new you were a shrimp noob and let you walk out with pandas and BBs - they should be shot!

Def good idea to start with something like CBS and pay close attention to you WP.

The critical time for chillers has probably past but you'll still need to monitor tank temp.

Im still breeding L's and now shrimp so it is possible to go from one to the other. Good luck this time round.

Yeah bought it from local fish store. The actual seller was the fish store owner. He said that they were easy to keep as he keeps crs and CBS with them and I saw that there wasn't a problem. When asked if I needed chiller he said that i didn't be one because I've got air conditioning to cool it of. He also said that there able to handle temps upto 27-28c. So I took his word for it.

I live quite close to you so if you don't mind may I ask the name of the LFS?

As per forum rule. I didn't want to name names but its really got me pissed of as I gave him a reall y reall y good deal on my l stock. In return I thought that he would of looked after me but I wasn't the case. I'm a hobbyist just trying new stuff. I've always been a believer of helping others for the enjoyment of fish. But it goes to show that people are there just for the dosh!!! That's life !!!! Take the good with the bad and learn lol

What happened to you is a poo go!

Best way to get parameters good for shrimp is to invest with shrimp soil.

Best soil I have experienced with is Benibachi $54.95 per 5kg bag or Up Aqua Shrimp Sand $24 per 2kg.

Definitely need clean stable water so a good filter is essential. Many people get away with just air driven sponge filters but

I am paranoid about ammonia and high nitrates and use both sponge filters and a canister filter that is rated for 10x over filtration of my tank.

I have paid with cash over a thousand dollars for my shrimp (which are finally grown up and starting to breed now) and hate it even when the smallest shrimplets die.

It's still hot in Sydney- water can get up to 28 degrees so I have a chiller which keeps it a cool 23.5 degrees. The chiller is expensive $350, but if you have a $100 or $400 shrimp die on you, it would give me a sick feeling.

That fish shop owner needs a slap! By the way, welcome to the forum and hope you have better luck after you do some good research/ =)

G'day Dean. Good to see another expanding their horizons.

Definitely would recommend start cheap and work your way up mate. Very expensive to learn from your mistakes in this hobby!

Thanks for the reply. I've definitely learned the hard way. I don't really go out much these days with two kids and work just wanted something to keep me relaxed after work and dealing with two Brats of mine. Lol love my boys to death.

Welcome to SKF. Shame on the LFS, they're obviously not breeders of TB's, and don't appreciate the WP they require etc......

TB's do require certain strict criteria's, BUT once these are known and respected, their keeping/breeding isn't too difficult .... like everything else ... it's easy if you know how, and research and experience counts for heaps.

The shrimp products available to us do make our lives sooo much easier. Do your research via the forum, ask questions, and when it's time to setup your shrimp tank, share the journey, and no doubt there'll be numerous members here only too willing to assist.

Enjoy SKF.

Welcome to the forum Ethan, I'm sorry to hear about you shrimp, I've had some very bad experiences with LFS in Sydney when I used to live there, just don't let one w@nker spoil you're future addiction to shrimp. WP are very important when I comes to shrimp, especially Pandas & Blue Bolts, with CBS & CRS lower grades can be a bit more tolerant as long as your WP is stable. What your aiming for with them is below

PH 6.2-6.6

KH 0-2

GH 4-6

TDS 80-100

Temp 21-23

This is just a rough guide as I keep some of the A-S grade CRS with a TDS of 250 & temp of 25 & other people have kept them with a higher TDS, the key is to keep the WP stable. You only need to do a water change of 5% every two weeks & I only feed them every two or three days, in between the feed on bacteria in the gravel & on the filter. As JonX mentioned, shrimp soil is a very very good idea as most of them buff the ph down. Hope this helps, there's lots of other people on here that know a lot more than I do & hopefully they will add anything that I have missed :encouragement:

Alright, I've done a bit more research on gentian violet's cancer-causing potential but I haven't yet done research on malachite green's to compare. But from reading the California propositon 65 document about GV (North Americans incl. some Canadians will recognize this as the law that causes some products they buy to be labelled with "known to the state of California to cause cancer", including the exact product I bought) it seems that the risk of cancer is related to internal use, either injection or ingestion. Speaking of ingestion, I think GV bans mainly relate to its use in treating fish/shrimp/etc. which are intended for human consumption, because of the above. And in countries where GV isn't banned for this purpose, it does seem to get used on various species of shrimp without causing any issue for the shrimp themselves (at least enough so for shrimp farming purposes). See the following: In February, the FDA Began Rejecting Imported Shrimp for Gentian Violet and Chloramphenicol (2022 article by Southern Shrimp Alliance) FDA Starts New Calendar Year by Refusing Antibiotic-Contaminated Shrimp from Three BAP-Certified Indian Processors and Adding a BAP-Certified Vietnamese Processor to Import Alert (2024 article by Southern Shrimp Alliance) Southern Shrimp Alliance and some other organizations have tons of other articles in this vein, but I'd be here for a while and would end up writing an absolutely massive post if I were to link every instance I found of articles mentioning shrimp shipments with gentian violet and/or leucogentian violet registering as contaminants. That being said, I know shrimp farmed for consumption and dwarf shrimp are often somewhat distantly related (in fact, the one time a shrimp's species name is listed that I can see, it's the prawn sp. Macrobrachium rosenbergii, who at best occupies the same infraorder as Neocaridina davidi but nothing nearer), but this at least gives a slightly better way of guessing whether it will be safe for aquarium dwarf shrimp or not than my bladder snail anecdote from the OP.

I would hazard a guess that perhaps those eggs were unfertilized and thereby unviable? Did the eggs change colour, usually yellow to grey as the yolks used up, or any eyes in the eggs. Is your water ok, using RO remineralised and the parameters in range, as I have heard others say that if the water isn't good it can 'force' a molt? How is it going overall, do you have a good size colony in the tank, you may have reached 'maximum occupancy' as a tank can only support so many occupants.

Hello folks,  The current problem I am having is that my Taiwan bee shrimp are molting before all their eggs have hatched.  Often the shrimp keep the eggs for 40+ days.  During that time, they lose about half or so, either due to dropping or duds or whatever.  Shortly before molting they look to have about a dozen left, and then they molt with about half a dozen eggs still on the shell.  Then the other shirmp will come and eat the shell.  These last few times, I have been getting around 0-3 surviving babies per batch.  I figure I can make the eggs hatch faster by raising the water temperature more (currently around 68F, which is already a few degrees higher than I used to keep it) or make the shrimp grow slower by feeding them less (protein).  Currently I feed Shrimp King complete every other day, and also a small dab of Shrimp Fit alternating days.  Maybe I can start alternating with more vegetable food like mulberry?  or just decrease the amount of food?

Yeah, cancer risk was a thing I'd seen mentioned a lot when looking into gentian violet briefly. I kinda just figured it might only be as bad as the cancer risk of malachite green as well, but maybe I should look into it more. I've been doing a pretty good job of not getting it on my skin and also avoiding dunking my unprotected hands into the tank water while treating my fish at least, though. Maybe I'll just not use it once I'm done this course of medication anyways, because I know a store I can sometimes get to that's pretty distant carries both malachite green and methylene blue, and in pretty large quantities.

Can't help you with Gentian Violet, sorry. It is banned in Australia violet for potential toxicity, and even possible cancer risks. I thought it was banned in Canada as well. At least, you now know why there isn't much info on gentian violet medication and it's use. But keep an eye on the snails after a week. If it affects the snails, it might not kill them immediately. So keep checking for up to a week. Much safer options out there. No point risking your own life over unsafe products.
