Filter for nano cube

If I take the sump section out of my cube what would be a good filter system for it. Could the power head be adapted to any other filter. I can't catch out the shrimp that are in the sump and if I close the hole they won't get back in- I did take all the filter matrix out but still unable to get them. Are sponge filters enough ? Any ideas appreciated.

cheers

Lol. Knew you would run into that problem. Ive got exactly the same tank ripped out the sump. I have a 2215. Pretty strong flow i face the spray bar to the back wall.

2213 would be fine.

I have only air powered sponge filters on all of my shrimp tanks but you can put a power head in the top of it & have that run the filter instead of the air :encouragement:

Jonx I don't know that one what brand is it so I can look it up. I won't have a high density of shrimp in there so want a simple setup.

Hi Squiggle so if I put one of those double head type sponge filter or two small ones you think that would do? I like them especially the small ones because you can hide them plus they break the water surface.

Where did that roo go?

Squiggle what happened to the roo go did the cat eat him?

I wouldn't use the smallest one, just make sure it will do double the size of your tank, over filtration is good. Also a good thing about the sponge filters is the shrimp can eat the bacteria growing on them :encouragement:

The power head is the aqua one maxi 101 , the sump has two carbon cartridges and then a sponge that the water is pulled through, I have also added some noodles to one of the chambers and some filter wool behind the intake grid.

Thanks Squiggle I looked it up on eBay and it was $120 and I would need to do both cubes and I'm not allowed to spend big for a while those four free shrimp have cost over $1000 so mmm best go for a cheaper option for now

2nd hand eheim canisters pop up from ebay for under $70 from time to time.

I just sold my old eheim 2215 last week for $50.

Just keep an eye out. Eheims are worth it.

Ok thanks Jonx. If I can catch the shrimp out of the sump tomorrow I can fix where they are getting in so hopefully that's what will happen

I had no issues with the built

in sump of the aqua one panorama 29L. can take some pics and show you how i did it if you want.

it ran for a few months and i never cleaned the intake, no flow issues either

had crs breeding in there till it got too hot and I moved the colony into a chilled tank.

I will set it up again when the weather cools down a bit and probably should start a log.

hi Blind fisherman I would like to see how yours worked but my issue is actually a build fault. I have two cubes I bought at the same time same shop same brand etc, number 1 cube is fine no issues. Number 2 cube has the black divider for the sump slightly further forward so the pump sits too far back from the outlet hole allowing the shrimp to get into the sump. I have now cut a piece of plastic hose that can cover pump outlet and then the hose can go through the sump hole stopping the shrimp from getting through. So essentially the problem will be solved , I will also have a small sponge filter in the tank area to help aerate the water and have an area for the babies to feed. My problem now is there is still a shrimp in the sump and I am unable to catch it. I took all the media etc out of the sump yesterday and still couldn't get it. I know it can get out but they are all in and out of the sump now. If I don't fix it any babies born in the sump will likely get sucked into the pump. So if I have to pull the sump down which apparently is easy to do I don't know whether to put it back together again.:dejection: So the saga goes on . Will let you all know the outcome lets hope the shrimp comes out I plug hole and all will be well, YEAH RIGHT LOL

cheers

I have just spent the last couple of hours trying to catch my elusive shrimp and when that didn't happen I tried to dismantle my sump as someone on the forum said the back plate just slides out. Unfortunately not in this one. We tried to cut the silicone and pulled at everything we could but it all stayed firmly secured. I have put it all back together added a small air driven sponge filter and left the two delinquent shrimp to their own devices. It will be a lot of up and overnight for them but they got in so let's hope they get out. I have left the gap for the pump open so they can come out through that, just hope not too many will try to go in! Will leave them for a week or so then if necessary I will close that tank down , put the shrimp elsewhere and hopefully get the other two out with the water. Great way to spend a HOT day

Cheers

Alright, I've done a bit more research on gentian violet's cancer-causing potential but I haven't yet done research on malachite green's to compare. But from reading the California propositon 65 document about GV (North Americans incl. some Canadians will recognize this as the law that causes some products they buy to be labelled with "known to the state of California to cause cancer", including the exact product I bought) it seems that the risk of cancer is related to internal use, either injection or ingestion. Speaking of ingestion, I think GV bans mainly relate to its use in treating fish/shrimp/etc. which are intended for human consumption, because of the above. And in countries where GV isn't banned for this purpose, it does seem to get used on various species of shrimp without causing any issue for the shrimp themselves (at least enough so for shrimp farming purposes). See the following: In February, the FDA Began Rejecting Imported Shrimp for Gentian Violet and Chloramphenicol (2022 article by Southern Shrimp Alliance) FDA Starts New Calendar Year by Refusing Antibiotic-Contaminated Shrimp from Three BAP-Certified Indian Processors and Adding a BAP-Certified Vietnamese Processor to Import Alert (2024 article by Southern Shrimp Alliance) Southern Shrimp Alliance and some other organizations have tons of other articles in this vein, but I'd be here for a while and would end up writing an absolutely massive post if I were to link every instance I found of articles mentioning shrimp shipments with gentian violet and/or leucogentian violet registering as contaminants. That being said, I know shrimp farmed for consumption and dwarf shrimp are often somewhat distantly related (in fact, the one time a shrimp's species name is listed that I can see, it's the prawn sp. Macrobrachium rosenbergii, who at best occupies the same infraorder as Neocaridina davidi but nothing nearer), but this at least gives a slightly better way of guessing whether it will be safe for aquarium dwarf shrimp or not than my bladder snail anecdote from the OP.

I would hazard a guess that perhaps those eggs were unfertilized and thereby unviable? Did the eggs change colour, usually yellow to grey as the yolks used up, or any eyes in the eggs. Is your water ok, using RO remineralised and the parameters in range, as I have heard others say that if the water isn't good it can 'force' a molt? How is it going overall, do you have a good size colony in the tank, you may have reached 'maximum occupancy' as a tank can only support so many occupants.

Hello folks,  The current problem I am having is that my Taiwan bee shrimp are molting before all their eggs have hatched.  Often the shrimp keep the eggs for 40+ days.  During that time, they lose about half or so, either due to dropping or duds or whatever.  Shortly before molting they look to have about a dozen left, and then they molt with about half a dozen eggs still on the shell.  Then the other shirmp will come and eat the shell.  These last few times, I have been getting around 0-3 surviving babies per batch.  I figure I can make the eggs hatch faster by raising the water temperature more (currently around 68F, which is already a few degrees higher than I used to keep it) or make the shrimp grow slower by feeding them less (protein).  Currently I feed Shrimp King complete every other day, and also a small dab of Shrimp Fit alternating days.  Maybe I can start alternating with more vegetable food like mulberry?  or just decrease the amount of food?

Yeah, cancer risk was a thing I'd seen mentioned a lot when looking into gentian violet briefly. I kinda just figured it might only be as bad as the cancer risk of malachite green as well, but maybe I should look into it more. I've been doing a pretty good job of not getting it on my skin and also avoiding dunking my unprotected hands into the tank water while treating my fish at least, though. Maybe I'll just not use it once I'm done this course of medication anyways, because I know a store I can sometimes get to that's pretty distant carries both malachite green and methylene blue, and in pretty large quantities.

Can't help you with Gentian Violet, sorry. It is banned in Australia violet for potential toxicity, and even possible cancer risks. I thought it was banned in Canada as well. At least, you now know why there isn't much info on gentian violet medication and it's use. But keep an eye on the snails after a week. If it affects the snails, it might not kill them immediately. So keep checking for up to a week. Much safer options out there. No point risking your own life over unsafe products.
