Sanitising RO units

Hi all,

got my portable RO unit this week and the instructions state the tubes should be sanitised fortnightly. Can someone please let me know how you do it. What is safe for the shrimp

Thanks once again CNgo:encouragement: My system says clean the tubing fortnightly is that over kill or is that what you do?

I think that might be a bit much, I think the recommendation is if you're running it full time :encouragement:

Hi Squiggle yes I won't be using it very much probably 10 -20 litres a week if that. I guess if I just keep it clean and do a quick soak monthly it should be OK? I might see if you can still get Milton solution thats good for soaking babies bottles and doesn't interfere with the rubber/silicone etc.

Sounds like a good plan, obviously only wash the lines but when you do make sure you remember or mark them so it's easy to reassemble them :encouragement:

I didnt even know you were meant to clean the lines. Why do you need to if pure water is coming out of them?

I think because it is a portable one it is open if you take it on and off the tap although I don't know if that is the reason the instructions say to do it.

+1....have had my unit for 2+ years, and have not cleaned them......I presume if the TDS is 0, then the water is PURE/Bacteria/Mineral FREE, this RO/DI water has no "use by date" ?

Sounds about right to me seems silly to introduce chemicals to clean it.

Just because the TDS is 0 does not mean there is no bacteria present? How would one detect if bacteria is present unless sending the RO to a lab? I think ut is wise to sanitize just not so frequent, if it is safe for human consumption then it is safe for shrimp just make sure it is a light solution and rinsed thoroughly (flushed out).

CNgo I will definitely sanitise the tubes but probably not fortnightly and I will try to get the baby bottle sanitiser Milton if it is still available so it should be safe.
