Just out of curiosity. I'd thought I'd ask a few of you online shoppers some of the stuff that you're looking for at the moment.

I'm currently searching for a DECENT thermostat unit to run with my cooling fans...

I've come across this particular one.

http://www.amazingamazon.com.au/eco-tech-dimming-reptile-thermostat.html

I also came across these external filters

And these moss balls

So there's 2 points to this thread.. What kind of thermostat do you suggest I use to turn off at a predetermined point for my cooling fans. Assuming the one I showed you feel is adequate. IS it something you'd be interested in buying off the AOS online store or any of the above products?

For those interested I can get prices/ rough prices if you like or arrange a group buy. I'm not sure what I've gotten myself into?

Chris.

I personally have considered these thermostats and timer combos, the only reason I have never jumped on them was that it would be redundant to use them with chillers, but if your cooling with fans I think these would be a must have. Plus for me anything with blue led displays attracts me like a moth to fire lol.

Those canister filters I know are suppose to be really good, a friend has one and he loves it.

Throw a blue LED on something and I'm sold :) I was noticing the other day with my fans on during the dsay I could have a temperature of around 25/26 degrees during the day. If I leave the fans on night, that temp could drop to 22 degrees. Granted there are natural temperature fluctuations in nature during the day, I thought I'd try to rule that out and kind of automate my system a little more.I'm not sure how much they will be as they're a "Hagen" branded product, so expect them to be more dear than any of the whoflungdung/ Yumcha Chinese versions on ebay. There may also be rebadged Exo Terra ones for aquariums. I'll have a look later today if I can on pricing. Hagen has a great habit of rebading their products, they have their Fluval internal filters labeled as turtle filters..No one interested in the moss balls?

I had a look at the catalogue price for the cannisters. Comparing them to SIMILAR models on ebay. You can get them ordered and delivered for LESS than the purchase price of the Exoterra unit.

Out of curiosity, what ball park would you be happy/ feel comfortable paying?

I can't recall the price, but the 2213 will be more than enough for that size. I'm not sure what bio filter upgrade you're refering to, as they come setup with media (Efimech, blue sponge, Efisubstrat, white filter pad and carbon pad)

I'll get you a price tomorrow when I'm at work :)

The 2213 is $174. I've only heard of them being empty (parallel imported) or with media (legit import)

Yeah the moss balls look good & I'd definitely be interested in the temp sensor/switch, what sort of price would they be? :D

The thermostat would be around $90 but if there was enough interest I could get that price down for a group buy

Sounds good guys... I've tried to order 2 for myself from the local warehouse (In Perth) but they only had 1 in stock. I will play around with it, try it out and give my feedback on them. Apparently I may get it next Friday (with some of our other stock that is being freighted over). I personally won't order or stock anything that I think is crap, unless a customer wants it. I find it hard to sell a product from a moral point of view and personal point of view if it's something I wouldn't use myself or a product that I feel is landfill fodder.

I was hoping to give those thermostats a good play this weekend considering the incoming heatwave. Oh well

I have a thermostat unit I got from Hong Kong through an eBay seller.

$18 with free delivery.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/170876858550?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

It runs my chiller and heater, my chiller is a little old and doesn't read the water temp very accurately. With this unit I put the temp sensor inside the tank. It can be calibrated easily to allow for accurate temp monitoring and you can set the threshold manually. Mine is set to allow .5 degrees fluctuation either way.

It is set at 26.5 degrees and the chiller cut in at 27 degrees, the heater cuts in a 26 degrees.

I saw them, but it didn't look like they had all the cables you needed to plug and play. Someone was selling one all wired up by a sparky, but I was hoping for an off the shelf type unit.

Alright, I've done a bit more research on gentian violet's cancer-causing potential but I haven't yet done research on malachite green's to compare. But from reading the California propositon 65 document about GV (North Americans incl. some Canadians will recognize this as the law that causes some products they buy to be labelled with "known to the state of California to cause cancer", including the exact product I bought) it seems that the risk of cancer is related to internal use, either injection or ingestion. Speaking of ingestion, I think GV bans mainly relate to its use in treating fish/shrimp/etc. which are intended for human consumption, because of the above. And in countries where GV isn't banned for this purpose, it does seem to get used on various species of shrimp without causing any issue for the shrimp themselves (at least enough so for shrimp farming purposes). See the following: In February, the FDA Began Rejecting Imported Shrimp for Gentian Violet and Chloramphenicol (2022 article by Southern Shrimp Alliance) FDA Starts New Calendar Year by Refusing Antibiotic-Contaminated Shrimp from Three BAP-Certified Indian Processors and Adding a BAP-Certified Vietnamese Processor to Import Alert (2024 article by Southern Shrimp Alliance) Southern Shrimp Alliance and some other organizations have tons of other articles in this vein, but I'd be here for a while and would end up writing an absolutely massive post if I were to link every instance I found of articles mentioning shrimp shipments with gentian violet and/or leucogentian violet registering as contaminants. That being said, I know shrimp farmed for consumption and dwarf shrimp are often somewhat distantly related (in fact, the one time a shrimp's species name is listed that I can see, it's the prawn sp. Macrobrachium rosenbergii, who at best occupies the same infraorder as Neocaridina davidi but nothing nearer), but this at least gives a slightly better way of guessing whether it will be safe for aquarium dwarf shrimp or not than my bladder snail anecdote from the OP.

I would hazard a guess that perhaps those eggs were unfertilized and thereby unviable? Did the eggs change colour, usually yellow to grey as the yolks used up, or any eyes in the eggs. Is your water ok, using RO remineralised and the parameters in range, as I have heard others say that if the water isn't good it can 'force' a molt? How is it going overall, do you have a good size colony in the tank, you may have reached 'maximum occupancy' as a tank can only support so many occupants.

Hello folks,  The current problem I am having is that my Taiwan bee shrimp are molting before all their eggs have hatched.  Often the shrimp keep the eggs for 40+ days.  During that time, they lose about half or so, either due to dropping or duds or whatever.  Shortly before molting they look to have about a dozen left, and then they molt with about half a dozen eggs still on the shell.  Then the other shirmp will come and eat the shell.  These last few times, I have been getting around 0-3 surviving babies per batch.  I figure I can make the eggs hatch faster by raising the water temperature more (currently around 68F, which is already a few degrees higher than I used to keep it) or make the shrimp grow slower by feeding them less (protein).  Currently I feed Shrimp King complete every other day, and also a small dab of Shrimp Fit alternating days.  Maybe I can start alternating with more vegetable food like mulberry?  or just decrease the amount of food?

Yeah, cancer risk was a thing I'd seen mentioned a lot when looking into gentian violet briefly. I kinda just figured it might only be as bad as the cancer risk of malachite green as well, but maybe I should look into it more. I've been doing a pretty good job of not getting it on my skin and also avoiding dunking my unprotected hands into the tank water while treating my fish at least, though. Maybe I'll just not use it once I'm done this course of medication anyways, because I know a store I can sometimes get to that's pretty distant carries both malachite green and methylene blue, and in pretty large quantities.

Can't help you with Gentian Violet, sorry. It is banned in Australia violet for potential toxicity, and even possible cancer risks. I thought it was banned in Canada as well. At least, you now know why there isn't much info on gentian violet medication and it's use. But keep an eye on the snails after a week. If it affects the snails, it might not kill them immediately. So keep checking for up to a week. Much safer options out there. No point risking your own life over unsafe products.
