Suggested breeding boxes

I was wondering what type of breeding box everyone uses? I have a few of the mesh type fry savers kicking around, but everyone seems to use the sudo type breeding boxes so you can see the shrimp. I want something that's relatively escape proof, because I'm at the stage I'm running out of space and I don't want shrimp escaping and knocking up different types.

So.... post away.

Aquamanta large external secure lid sectionable too 3 compartments.Have 8 at the monent will be getting another 8.They run on air and have found if you remove the ceramic airstone you get better flow.I use them split into 3 and 2 of them per 4ft tank This gives me 6 different sets of breeders on a 4ft grow out.I just syphon of shrimplets to the grow out.

Id say the aquamanta large ones are a goer too. Have two and at the great price I may grab a few more.

Hey daydream takin off the ceremic diffuser, do you get the gurglin noise the sudoboxes have?

Wowsers man I bet they play a big part in your room then. I've been on the hunt for a small powerhead to attach to the uplift pipe but haven't been in luck yet.

How escape proof are these boxes? Do you mind taking a few photos so I can look at them in closer detail?

I use the Large and Slim M Sudo boxes myself and I find them great.

I'm looking after some shrimp for a friend at the moment and the first night I had them in the Large Sudo and the next morning there was not many left in there, they were able to climb out and jump into the tank. Just be careful that the sudo is not tilted to far towards tge tank and also that you don't have too much frogbit in there as that was how they climbed out.

I'm starting to hear some negatives however like the shrimp stop breeding in the boxes. My cherries have breed in there before but not much more.

Not good at posting photos but will get Gbang to take and upload some.havent had any escape yet have clips on th lid

The clips just keep the lid on, There is an over flow on the sudo just in case the outflow gets blocked it will flow over the tank side and run into the tank rather than onto the floor. They were climbing onto the frogbit and then crawling out the overflow gap and dragging themselves into the tank. Was actually pretty amazing to watch.

I'm looking for something that reduces the likelihood of escapees...... and would also consider in tank ones. We have some at work but they're not shrimp proof *shakes fist*

I am confuse with this topic as I have never seen any of my shrimp escaping from the box?

if you guys are referring to the outlet, the original Sudo makes a upgrade mesh kit which will stop any shrimplet escape from the box which any other imitation version don't make.

IMO Sudo breeding box are made for selective breeding or to hold shrimp temporarily, i've seen ppl breeding cherry/crs in them too but I don't recommend anyone to use them as a "grow out box".

Hey Kitz,

I had the upgrade mesh as well. They were smart and used the frogbit to help climb through the over flow on the front which I did not even realise was there till after this occurred. I was at work and I had my mother call me frantic as she thought someone had broken in and stolen them as they were not not on the sudo and she could not see them on the floor or in the tank(they were hiding).

I use several types, but like the internal breeding boxes, although they do take up space .... I've got a couple of used ones if you're interested for a try before you buy ?

I recieved my sudo box from kitz today! Rather suprised at how quiet it is! Got it setup for some selective breeding. However the female yellow i was going to use died the other day. :-(

@trav, I was gonna tell the same story but with the roles reversed lol

I have to admit I'm a bit of a brand snob, in this circumstance probably unnecessarily.

Sudo to me has always done the job it was asked to (temporarily house a few selected shrimp) I have not had great success in housing them permanently in a sudo (but I suppose its an awesome excuse to have to set up another tank)

I'm always a bit hesitant to try a copy brand, as I would hate to save $5 and loose $500 worth of shrimp, having said that temptation is always hard to ignore :)

But in regards to the upgrades kitz mentioned they do practically shrimp proof the box and turn it into an amazing product.

Could you get a shot of where the water returns back to the tank Glen? I'm curious if it's a small return like the Sudo boxes or different style.

How much are those Aquamanta boxes going for over there?

I'm still considering the Sudo boxes with upgrades. I'm a sucker for upgrades :p

This in an internal one I got from China, the photo is a 10x10x10, the one I have is a 30x10x10. The holes are small enough for shrimplets to escape but the adults are only able to go out from the top, where I keep it blocked with the divider that comes with breeding box. However I found that it has bad water circulation and I still think the ones are the Aquaone net types. I seen one on SS which is a combination of plastic and SS mesh on the sides, that was pretty special.

no need to saj. the aqua manta box is an exact replica of the sudo with the exception of the intake where there is a airstone in it lol. but are great i highly rate them

Thats a great photo, beautiful blue bolt, I hope it survived the molt without dropping the eggs! I think I can just about see some black dots (eyes) on the central egg but can't be 100% sure. I used to (and plan to again) do weekly water change of 10-15% but if you do too large or quick (not drip in new water) that would likely trigger a molt. What KH are they in, my new setup is sitting at (and refusing to budge) KH 3 and PH 7.5 so I may have to settle for neocaridina shrimp this time as opposed to the caridina I want, though not looking/deciding just yet, give the tank a bit more of a run in! Tap water here starts at kH 14, tds 320, when filtered goes to KH 0 and PH 6 but when put in the tank keeps going to KH3 and PH 7.5 despite 3 x 50% water changes???? You may be at 'maximum capacity' with only 20L tank especially if the tank is a cube type rather than shallow type?

Right now this tank only has blue bolts and golden bee (red bolts?).  The eggs start off all brown, but at the end, I notice that some are kind of a clear pink-ish color.  So I don't know if that is the egg color of dud or golden bee.  Picture of shrimp only about half hour before molting. The water is always RO + remineralizer, so it should be ok. The tank seems to still be on a "good streak" ever since I started the regimen of weekly water change, monthly gravel vac and plant trim.  The point being to keep the amount of waste low and removing moss / floating plants so that the nitrates go towards growing algae.  At one point, I had three berried females, but only netted about half dozen babies by the end, due to this early molting problem.  There might be about 30-40 shrimp total in 5 gallons, but still very few full-sized adults.

Alright, I've done a bit more research on gentian violet's cancer-causing potential but I haven't yet done research on malachite green's to compare. But from reading the California propositon 65 document about GV (North Americans incl. some Canadians will recognize this as the law that causes some products they buy to be labelled with "known to the state of California to cause cancer", including the exact product I bought) it seems that the risk of cancer is related to internal use, either injection or ingestion. Speaking of ingestion, I think GV bans mainly relate to its use in treating fish/shrimp/etc. which are intended for human consumption, because of the above. And in countries where GV isn't banned for this purpose, it does seem to get used on various species of shrimp without causing any issue for the shrimp themselves (at least enough so for shrimp farming purposes). See the following: In February, the FDA Began Rejecting Imported Shrimp for Gentian Violet and Chloramphenicol (2022 article by Southern Shrimp Alliance) FDA Starts New Calendar Year by Refusing Antibiotic-Contaminated Shrimp from Three BAP-Certified Indian Processors and Adding a BAP-Certified Vietnamese Processor to Import Alert (2024 article by Southern Shrimp Alliance) Southern Shrimp Alliance and some other organizations have tons of other articles in this vein, but I'd be here for a while and would end up writing an absolutely massive post if I were to link every instance I found of articles mentioning shrimp shipments with gentian violet and/or leucogentian violet registering as contaminants. That being said, I know shrimp farmed for consumption and dwarf shrimp are often somewhat distantly related (in fact, the one time a shrimp's species name is listed that I can see, it's the prawn sp. Macrobrachium rosenbergii, who at best occupies the same infraorder as Neocaridina davidi but nothing nearer), but this at least gives a slightly better way of guessing whether it will be safe for aquarium dwarf shrimp or not than my bladder snail anecdote from the OP.

I would hazard a guess that perhaps those eggs were unfertilized and thereby unviable? Did the eggs change colour, usually yellow to grey as the yolks used up, or any eyes in the eggs. Is your water ok, using RO remineralised and the parameters in range, as I have heard others say that if the water isn't good it can 'force' a molt? How is it going overall, do you have a good size colony in the tank, you may have reached 'maximum occupancy' as a tank can only support so many occupants.

Hello folks,  The current problem I am having is that my Taiwan bee shrimp are molting before all their eggs have hatched.  Often the shrimp keep the eggs for 40+ days.  During that time, they lose about half or so, either due to dropping or duds or whatever.  Shortly before molting they look to have about a dozen left, and then they molt with about half a dozen eggs still on the shell.  Then the other shirmp will come and eat the shell.  These last few times, I have been getting around 0-3 surviving babies per batch.  I figure I can make the eggs hatch faster by raising the water temperature more (currently around 68F, which is already a few degrees higher than I used to keep it) or make the shrimp grow slower by feeding them less (protein).  Currently I feed Shrimp King complete every other day, and also a small dab of Shrimp Fit alternating days.  Maybe I can start alternating with more vegetable food like mulberry?  or just decrease the amount of food?
