So this is my 50L tank. It's my pride and joy and my baby! lol

It's got all the bells and whistles (That the Mrs will allow me to buy "atm hehe") and runs like an absolute dream.

Tank: 50L - 1.5ft x 1.0ft by 1.0ft

Lighting: 8w T5 (It's enough for the plants I've got)

Filters: Air driven sponge & A Fluval C2 HOB (Sexy filter)

Heater: 50w (Forget the brand?)

Chiller: Twin chiller fans, I think they're around 4w or so.

Plants: Anubias (Of course), Java Moss & Subwasserstang (Can't spell)

Livestock: CBS - A & S grades ATM + around 40-50 Shrimplettes

Substrate: Natural River Pebbles.

The river pebbles look great. Don't see them in tanks too often. Gives it a very nice natural look. Good job!

Thanks guys :D

@Zacsbee89 - Thank you, I'm a real perfectionist when it comes to the health of my plants. My scape isn't much at all as I have very little artistic talent lol. But I really like my plants to be as healthy and green as possible. The photo's are very I guess 'zoomed in' so it takes away a little of their beauty but when you look at them with your eyes they're very bright glowing green.

The rocks some Lava rock I sourced from anglesea near a little fresh water dam type thing. I've read lava rock can raise pH but I've never had an issue with this.

@HeavyD - Thanks mate. I've used shrimp buffering substrates and decided I'm not a real fan. I don't really like the look and don't like having something buffering while I'm trying to buffer etc. I'd much rather just have a substrate that doesn't effect parameters so I can have full control without a third party trying to do it's own thing.

@Dean - Believe it or not, But I actually got them from the little Aquarium Shop in the Footscray market lol!

Thanks for all the kind words about the tank :) Much appreciated!

Very nice Triggs, you're right, the plants looks extremely healthy. What plant is throwing that shoot to the surface ? What chiller do you have there ?

That's a banana lily. For some reason I can't get that thing to grow as nice as it did the first few weeks I had it in there. I'm thinking maybe it's lack of nutrients but am not going to dose my tank with any fertilizers at all so it either grows or goes lol.

I've got twin Chilling fan's exactly like these ones pictured below:

cooling-fan-2-fan-22.png

They are brilliant. I turn them on in the morning on days expected above 28c even when the tanks at 22c as the heater keeps it in tune until the fans are needed, basically using the heater as a thermostat while the rooms cooler.

once the room heats up above 24c the heater doesn't kick in unless the fans bring the temp below the 22c.

I've watched them on days where my rooms ambient temperature is 30c + and the tanks always 22c with the fans and heater going in conjunction with each other.

I'd rather a chiller but then I'd need a canister filter and my Mrs won't let me buy anything like that until we've found our own place. She's worried about leaking or real estate being all 'wtf' lol.

Thanks Triggs, nothing like a comprehensive answer incl. pics, description, experiences etc....cheers mate.

I've honestly not tried a chiller fan, but have heard many good results. Although I do have chillers in my tanks, my room ambient temperature can get up to 30+, and the chillers don't perform as well as they should...so considering a backup for 2 of my tanks....the rest seems OK.

You're welcome buddy.

When I find something that works really well I try to explain and share it for everyone as much as possible. That way more people can enjoy them.

I'd highly recommend them to anyone. As a backup or even a main cooler for smaller tanks.

I'm not sure how they'd go on a tank larger than maybe 60-80ltrs but they work brilliant on smaller tanks.

Their only downfall is evaporation. When the rooms around 30c and the tanks 22c and the air is constantly blowing on the surface I can loose up too 1-2cm of water (around 2-4ltrs) in a day quite easily.

But would far prefer that than a 28c tank.

I think it was around $30-$40 inc postage from eBay.

You could prob find them locally but I needed one ASAP and figured eBay would be the fastest way to both find and get one.

I honestly have no idea.

I've only had experience using them on tanks 50ltr and under.

Anything I'd guess would only be that. But you could try and see how they go and if they are not sufficient you could always sell/trade them off.

They also come in 4 fans and 6 fans.

Maybe google some reviews on the larger fans on bigger tanks.

Sorry I can't be any more help but I don't like assuming or guessing. I only share advice on things I know first hand and am confident in saying/advising.

Best of luck.

I would hazard a guess that perhaps those eggs were unfertilized and thereby unviable? Did the eggs change colour, usually yellow to grey as the yolks used up, or any eyes in the eggs. Is your water ok, using RO remineralised and the parameters in range, as I have heard others say that if the water isn't good it can 'force' a molt? How is it going overall, do you have a good size colony in the tank, you may have reached 'maximum occupancy' as a tank can only support so many occupants.

Hello folks,  The current problem I am having is that my Taiwan bee shrimp are molting before all their eggs have hatched.  Often the shrimp keep the eggs for 40+ days.  During that time, they lose about half or so, either due to dropping or duds or whatever.  Shortly before molting they look to have about a dozen left, and then they molt with about half a dozen eggs still on the shell.  Then the other shirmp will come and eat the shell.  These last few times, I have been getting around 0-3 surviving babies per batch.  I figure I can make the eggs hatch faster by raising the water temperature more (currently around 68F, which is already a few degrees higher than I used to keep it) or make the shrimp grow slower by feeding them less (protein).  Currently I feed Shrimp King complete every other day, and also a small dab of Shrimp Fit alternating days.  Maybe I can start alternating with more vegetable food like mulberry?  or just decrease the amount of food?

Yeah, cancer risk was a thing I'd seen mentioned a lot when looking into gentian violet briefly. I kinda just figured it might only be as bad as the cancer risk of malachite green as well, but maybe I should look into it more. I've been doing a pretty good job of not getting it on my skin and also avoiding dunking my unprotected hands into the tank water while treating my fish at least, though. Maybe I'll just not use it once I'm done this course of medication anyways, because I know a store I can sometimes get to that's pretty distant carries both malachite green and methylene blue, and in pretty large quantities.

Can't help you with Gentian Violet, sorry. It is banned in Australia violet for potential toxicity, and even possible cancer risks. I thought it was banned in Canada as well. At least, you now know why there isn't much info on gentian violet medication and it's use. But keep an eye on the snails after a week. If it affects the snails, it might not kill them immediately. So keep checking for up to a week. Much safer options out there. No point risking your own life over unsafe products.

Hello! I have a tank that currently does not contain shrimp, but does contain neon tetras which I am currently treating for Ich, as well as some bladder snails. Shrimp will be a later addition, likely cherry shrimp but I'm still doing research just to be sure. Initially I'd intended to buy some sort of Ich-fighting product that contains malachite green after doing a decent bit of research on it, most of which indicated that it should be shrimp-safe so I'd be good if I ever needed to use it again once shrimp were actually introduced (though I should note I'm aware shrimp can't get Ich, I'm more wondering in case the tetras could get Ich again, or something else that responds to similar medication). I ended up not being able to find any MG-containing products without either having to travel quite far or wait multiple days for delivery (which I was worried could lead the Ich to be fatal), and ended up picking up 'Top Fin Ick Remedy', a product that contains gentian violet which is a triarylmethane dye like malachite green. The bottle has two slightly differently worded warnings about its use with invertebrates ("not recommended for" and "not safe for" respectively), but when I'd been researching malachite green, I'd also heard of products that contain MG but not any other ingredients that would be harmful to inverts still being branded with warnings that they could be harmful, just as a "just-in-case" since the manufacturer didn't test it on any inverts, and I'm wondering if maybe it could be a similar situation here. I'm having a very very hard time finding information about gentian violet's use in fishkeeping at all though, it seems currently extremely uncommon. What I will say though is that I'm on day 2 of treating my tetras with it, and the bladder snails seem just fine -- in fact today I noticed what looked to be a bladder snail that appeared to be newly hatched (because of its size) that I hadn't seen before that was zipping around the tank without issue. But obviously, shrimp are not snails, and bladder snails are also notoriously hardy little guys, so what I'm seeing right now could easily be totally inapplicable to cherry shrimp. It might even be inapplicable to other species of snails, for all I know. Has anyone else here ever used anything that contains gentian violet in a tank that actually does contain shrimp? Were they okay, or should I make sure to not use it once shrimp are added?
