HMF Style filter help

Hi All,

 

I posted maybe a few weeks ago about redoing my 170l into a Taiwan bee tank. I've got my sponge filters but they only seem to have hole in the bottom of the pipe. Is it worth adding several more going up the pipe? As you can see from the picture.

I've not used one of these but would use it as it comes as it must have been designed to work the way it is supplied! It should be easy enough to adapt it later if need be?

Just saw this video and if you watch closely the one they are using has a lot of holes in the tube so maybe it is a good idea, hopefully someone with experience of this type will give you advice?
